Greetings. This is my first post to the Geiger list. Hope someone can help. I have been trying to find the parents of Cornelius Geiger for the past 6 months. He was born in Wayne Co., Georgia on June 20, 1821. He married a Mary Anne Gianovali in Savannah in 1847. They had three daughters, two of which made it to adulthood. He married a second time, after the death of Mary Ann, in 1873. His second wife was Frances M. Williamson. They had around 5 children. Only two made it to adulthood. His son, Leland Ray Geiger was a result of this second marriage and Leland is my husband's grandfather. Cornelius spent a large part of his life as an overseer on Refuge Plantation in Camden, Ga., where he primarily raised rice and was respondsible for paying the workers. There are a number of Cornelius Geigers in the South Carolina connections, but none are the same . I am sure that one of the SC lines is related, but I cannot make any connections thus far. Searching for birth or death notices has been unsuccessful as nothing prior to 1919 was required to be listed. Neither the Archives or the county records are available prior to the 1919 date. Unless I can get to a newpaper in Wayne co., or in Waycross, that may have an obituary, I may never find out anything additional. And right now I cannot travel to Southern Ga. to check it out. Can any help me? Do you have a stray Cornelius sitting on your family branch? Anybody have any idea on how to obtain vital records that do not appear to exist? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. Susan Wilson at hrw3@worldnet.att.net
