    1. [GEIGER-L] Here is my proof on Mary (Geiger) Hoffman of Georgia
    2. John H. Smallwood, Jr.
    3. Below is what I have complied regarding my research concerning the ancestry of Anna Maria Geiger who married William Stafford. These families were in Effingham and Bulloch Co., GA. I think from what I have found, I now have proof that Anna Maria (Mary Ann) (Geiger) (Stafford) Hoffman/Huffman was indeed daughter of Ulrich Geiger. The first thing we have is the marriage of Anna Maria Geiger to William Stafford at Jerusalem Lutheran Church (Old Ebenezer), Effingham Co., GA in 1773. Next are the baptisms of their children, Mary, Abraham and Dinah. From this we a small family grouping and know that they lived in South Carolina in 1778/1779. We know that their two eldest children, Mary and Abraham, reached adulthood and married. Mary married Simeon Travis, son of William Travis and Abigail Denmark of Warren Co., NC. Abraham married Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. What became of Dinah is unknown. Obviously, William Stafford died sometime after 1780 and his widow beyond a doubt married Jacob Huffman/Hoffman. In an 1808 deed between Henry Zouk and Frederick Buntz, it is mentioned that part of the land being sold was 200 acres conveyed by Jacob Huffman and Ann Mary, his wife, to Abraham Stafford. In this and other deeds, Abraham’s wife is shown to be Elizabeth. Earlier, in 1801, Jacob Hoffman sold 400 acres to Abraham Stafford, Ann Mary Hoffman, witnessed this transaction and part of the land was bounded by Felix Geiger’s land. It’s interesting to note that in that same year, Thomas Peter Stafford and his wife, Marie, sold land he had inherited from his father, John, to Felix Geiger. From this we know that the Stafford, Hoffman and Geiger families were neighbors. In 1812, Jacob Huffman/Hoffman died. Simeon Travis was granted citation for letter of administration on the estate. The widow was listed as "Mary Huffman". In 1815, Felix Geiger, Abraham Geiger, Mary Hoffman and Cornelius Geiger, heirs of Ulrick Kegar (or Geiger) sold to their bother, John Geiger, also an heir of Ulrick Kegar 1/5 of 60 acres granted to their father in 1767. On the same day, the four children of Ulrich Geiger who still held title to their father’s land as tenants-in-common sold their 4/5 interest to Christopher Frederick Bunce. Obviously John wanted to keep his portion of their father’s land. It is interesting to note that these transactions took place in 1815 and Jacob Hoffman died in 1812. All of the children, except John Geiger and Mary Hoffman, who sold land to Bunce had a spouse who signed also. Even though this was her father’s land, her husband would have had to have signed the deed with her. Thus, we can safely say that she was a widow and very likely the widow of Jacob Hoffman. For the record I will give the children of Ulrich Geiger, along with their spouses: John Geiger, no spouse listed Abraham Geiger, wife, Mary. Cornelius Geiger, wife, Rebecca. Felix Geiger, wife, Mary (Mary Margaret in an 1804 deed) >From the Jerusalem Church records we know that Ulrich Geiger’s wife was named, Apollonia. This from the baptism of their daughter, Rachel, in 1769. The fate of Rachel is not known, but neither she nor Apollonia were alive in 1815. One problem that has arisen is a deed from the 1780s which was recorded in Effingham County. In this deed "Mary Stafford, widow" gave cattle and other personal property to her mother, Ann Mary Magdeline Geiger. There is a possibility that this Mary Stafford isn’t the Anna Maria Geiger who married William Stafford in 1773. But, if not, then who is she and who is Anne Mary Magdeline Geiger? >From the evidence found in the records of Bulloch County it would appear that Anna Maria Geiger who married William Stafford, was widowed, remarried to Jacob Hoffman and was the daughter of Ulrich and Apollonia Seekinger Geiger.
