Steve, I have a couple suggestions--but you appear to have already thought this out well so you most likely have considered this. First, have you tried to obtain a death certificate for Emily? Have you tried finding her with her parents either on the 1880 (assuming she was born in time to be on there) or 1900 census (assuming she didn't marry by 1900)?
