Kay, Kyher and Geyer and can be so frequently confused with Geiger and Kyger that they bear constant attention. Just last night I was commenting on something very similar on our companion Geyer mailing list. I was pointing out a letter I received in the mail yesterday from Barbara Campbell who does not have e-mail but who is with our lists in "spirit." Barbara is a descendant of John Adam Geiger/Geyer of Alsace Township, Berks County, PA and she had been struggling with the Geyer/Geiger spellings which run about 60% as Geyer and 40% as Geiger for her John Adam. The original spelling is uncertain but his descendants exclusively used the Geiger spelling. Tax lists, church records, etc. all show the spelling of Adam's surname as both Geyer and Geiger in various records. This is what Barbara wrote: "I was talking to an old PA Dutch farmer the other day and he was saying something about the Amity Township Geigers of today. When he said "Geiger" it finally struck me and made quite clear the Geier/Geiger name. The first "G" is hard, like we say it in English, but the 2nd "G" was very soft, almost like a catch of breath--like Geiher. So now I finally understand-the two Gs do NOT have the same sound." As if we needed further confusion! Joan
