    1. Re: [GEIGER-L] Sarah Geier/Geyer/Gier
    2. In a message dated 98-06-09 17:43:29 EDT, you write: > I am looking for any information about Sarah Geier, my GG Grandmother. She > was born about December 08, 1822 (according to her death certificate) in > Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County. According to her obituary (she d. June 26, > 1900 in Reading, Berks Co. PA), she had a brother, Thomas Geier (spelled > Geiger in the obit) of Philadelphia. She also had three surviving sisters: > Mrs. Jacob Fryer of Philadelphia. Mrs. Porter Case of Chicago, and Mrs. > William Fryer of Milton. Unfortunately I have no given names for any of the > sisters, just their married names. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who > might recognize any of these names or help provide any leads. In view of Nancy's query I would like to point out 2 things. First of all in my research I have found numerous occasions in which the surnames Geyer/Geier and Geiger have been used almost interchangeably. Geyer/Geier is a surname on its own and is not the same as Geiger--BUT the two surnames are often misspelled and used interchangeably and in some cases appear to possibly have been changed from one to the other permanently. In view of this I want to point out to all of you that there is another new list for the surname Geyer and all of its variants and those of you who are researching questionable surnames as Nancy is may want to subscribe to both lists to provide yourself with the best chance of finding more about your ancestors. The listowner of the Geyer list is Dave Rankin and he can be reached at: daverk@gte.net. He will be happy to provide you with information on how to subscribe to GEYER- L@rootsweb.com. For those of you familiar with Rootsweb lists the subscription instructions are the same for all of the lists. Second, I checked the 1820 census index for Schuylkill County, PA where Sarah Geier was born in 1822 and found only one listing for Geier/Geyer or Geiger in Orwigsburg Borough and that is for a John Geiger. However, also in Schuylkill in Brunswick Township in 1820 was a Henry Geyer. So it is possible that one of the two is Sarah's father. It would also appear from the obituary that there was more than occasional confusion in this family between Geyer/Geier and Geiger. This confusion between Geyer and Geiger in this family and the fact that Sarah died in Reading, Berks County make me believe she may be from the family of Adam Geyer/Geiger of Alsace Township, Berks County--there was always confusion between Geyer and Geiger in that family. Adam had a son Christopher who married Catharina Harf/Hurff and they had a son Johannes born in 1792 who would appear to possibly be the John Geiger on the 1820 census record. Cindy--are you paying attention to this query? Could this John be the one from this family? Do you know if that John had a daughter Sarah, or where he lived in 1820? Joan
