I just had the opportunity to check the 1860 census listings for Wetzel and Monongalia County, WV for 1860 (don't forget that WV was still a part of VA at this time) and found the following: Wetzel County: James Kiger, age 63 in Pine Grove P.O., page 59 (just above the entry for his son William below). (can't read entry for where born --but he was born in PA) William P. Kiger, Pine Grove P.O. page 59, age 28 (all born PA but entry too faint to read) Julia age 25 Martha P. age 3 Mary U. age 3 James D. age 2 Rachel Ann age too faint to read--but it is a fraction of a year. Charles Kiger, Pine Grove P.O., page 59, age 46, born PA, (appears one entry below the listing for William above) Sarah A. age 44, born PA Nancy age 17 (looks like 11 but should be 17 as she is listed in this position on the record) born PA Margaret age 16, born PA Helen Ann age 14, born VA Cynthie age 11, born VA Elizabeth age 8, born VA Barbara age 6, born VA Sarah J. age 4, born VA Jacob L. age 1, born VA >From other sources I know that Nancy would have been 17, and that Jacob Lindsay died in 1876, Helen is actually Ella Ann, and that the maiden name of Sarah A. is Davis. >From other evidence I know that James Kiger had another son George W. Kiger born about 1820. Where is George W. Kiger in 1860? Monongalia County: Fielding Kiger, age 73, Morgantown, Tanner, page 14, born VA. James Demaine, 28, born England Caroline Demaine, 25, born VA Mary B. Demaine, 7, born VA Asa O'Kelley 15 day laborer, born VA NOTE: occasionally Fielding Kiger appears as Fielding Kyger on some records. George Kiger, Morgantown, age 47, born VA (entry is just above Fielding Kiger), tanner, Mary, age 41, born VA Andrew, 17 (children all born VA) Virginia, 15 Winfield, 13 Fielding, 12 Mary E., 7 George, 5 Nathan, 2 John 2/12 Mary Conner, 67, born VA (could this be the mother-in-law?) Jacob Kiger, age 35, tanner, Morgantown (all entries born VA), (appears one entry below Fielding Kiger) Elizabeth, 26 Olivia, 11 Norvel, 6 Jacob N., 2 George O'Kelley, age 15, day laborer, born VA (is he the twin to Asa above?) Barbara Kiger, age 49, (all entries born PA) Wadestown, page 288-289 Charles, 32 (note it clearly says age 32 but Charles should be age 22) Mary, 17 Peter, 15 Nikolas 11 Ewing, 7 >From other evidence it is clear that this is Barbara Hochstetler/Hostutler, widow of Nicholas Kiger (younger brother to James Kiger listed above in Wetzel County) and that these are all of their children still living at home in 1860. Can anyone determine the relationship between Fielding Kiger, born about 1787, of Monongalia County, WV, and James Kiger of Wetzel County. I feel certain there is one. Could Fielding Kiger be a younger brother of James' father Charles Kiger born about1770-1774? Joan
