"The Wilmot township settlement in Waterloo County in the province Ontario in Canada was started in 1825 by settlers from Pennsylvania. It was located two miles south of Baden on Bleam's Road. Among the first arrivals was Christian Bösiger who was of Bernese descent and had lived in Normanvillars in the Alsace before his migration to America. With him arrived in Ontario Ulrich Steiner, Ulrich Geiger, and Daniel Geiger. They were joined later by other Swiss Mennonites from Pennsylvania. Bishop Benjamin Eby (1785-1853) from nearby Kitchener organized the newcomers into a congregation in 1831. A meetinghouse was built on the farm of Daniel Geiger, thus named Geiger Church. 'In early years Geiger's was a parent church for scattered congregations several townships north.' " Source: Leo Schelbert, Swiss Migration to America: The Swiss Mennonites. New York NY: Arno Press, 1980. pp. 232-3. Daniel Geiger was born 17 Mar 1799, died 2 May 1884 in Ontario. On 5 Apr 1833 he married Catharine Bosiger. Ulrich Geiger was born 22 Nov 1797, died 12 Feb 1864 in Ontario. In 1822, he married Barbara Bosiger. Daniel and Ulrich Geiger were sons of David Geiger, b. Nov 1755, and Verena Steiner, b. 24 Dec 1757 in France (Alsace?). Other intermarried members of the Geiger, Bösiger (later Bosinger/Basinger), and Steiner families from Normanvillars in the Alsace founded a Swiss Mennonite congregation in Wayne Co OH in 1825. They all used the same names, so are easy to confuse! Harriet Imrey himrey@ntelos.net
