Anne, Thanks for this information on the children of Hans Jacob Geiger. The information kept by the churchs and government in Switzerland was so great! It's too bad our ancestors didn't keep it up after coming to America, we would know where they all were. Wybehrt is really different -- I can't think of an American equivalent as with some of the other names. Would you give me the story on Abraham Geiger and his family? Did they come with Hans Jacob Geiger and his family, by chance? Was a William Geiger one of Abraham's children? Thanks so much, Jan Melton In a message dated 2/14/01 5:01:07 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Former Gov. Hs. Jacob GEIGER and Margaret FEHR had 10 ch. in SWT. In order of birth, they were: Herman (1707), Elsbetha (1709), Anna Cathrina (1711), Hs. Heinrich (1713), Maria Barbara (1715), Esther (b/d 1717 SWT), WYBEHRT (female-b. 1718), Hs. Jacob (1720), Johannes (b.1722-d.1725 SWT), and Margretha (1724). This is from the church records in SWT (which DO call him former Cantonal Governor, by the way). Esther and Johannes died young, but it is assumed all the rest came to America with their parents, as no further records exist in SWT. I have only seen Wybehrt GEIGER mentioned once in SC records and there she was called a son and her name was misspelled!! If she didn't just quietly die, I suspect she married young and disappeared into some other family. I've also wondered if she went by a pet name we haven't noticed. Wish we could find her - and her four sisters!! I believe Hs. Heinrich might be the Henry or Harry GEIGER we see in the SC records. Hs. Jacob had a cousin of the same name, two years older and son of Abraham GEIGER. The South Carolina records could apply to either of them. The other Hs. Jacob GEIGER (1718) was a much older brother of my Hs. Ulrich GEIGER (1730). Ulrich removed to GA in 1766, but records don't show if his brother did. Anne C. in FL __________ >>
Jan, I'm so far behind I don't know if I answered this. I agree they kept poor records, but I guess it wasn't their fault - they had to beg and plead for schools and a minister, so it wasn't easy. I'd like to ask someone in SWT about that name Wybehrt - I've not seen it anywhere else in either country, but that's how my church records show it - and as female. A search in the GEIGER archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/GEIGER-L/ would bring you a lot on Abraham GYGER or GEIGER, Hs. Jacob's younger brother who came to SC with him. He and wife Cathrina Schellig brought their four surviving children, Hs. Jacob, Johannes, Elsbetha and Hs. Ulrich, my ancestor - who later married and moved to GA. No William. Hs. Jacob (b. 1679) and Abraham (b. 1687) were the only surviving brothers - two previous Abrahams and two Hs. Ulrichs had died in SWT. Their four sisters all probably died in SWT (two, for sure).
