Doris, maybe we have corresponded before...Angeline LaFayette was a 3 year-old child who appeared in the 1850 Census for Grandfather Jessie, and I thought she might be a quadroon or Mulatto child, however it turns out that she is not, but likely a Cajun or French Canadian...of unknown origins...She was not a slave child... I talked with a Barbara Knotts in Ellisville MS last month, and she is a descendant of William Preston Long...Actually Lucinda Jane was a twin and the other child went to live with Rev. Long, a Methodist Circuit Rider, when he and Angeline divorced...He later married Melinda Harris. Barbara said there were several Lafayette brothers on the same Census over in Wayne County and that she thinks that they were laborers and no one had any use for the little girl, but that the Gieger's took her in, out of kindness... If you find out anything else, Please let me know... Wm. Preston Long's father, Archibald C. Long, is buried in the Meshack Rogers' Cemetery in Covington County MS and the backside of his headstone lists Angeline and Wm. Preston; however, Wm. P. is buried in the Long Cemetery in Jones Co.
