    3. I have finally found a web page for Berneck, SG, SWT .... the village in the Rheintal (Rhine Valley) with the Evangelische church where our GEIGERS were recorded since AT LEAST 1637 [death of Hans GYGER of Haslach]. The URL is http://www.berneck.ch/index_v4.html Click "Bitte Eintreten!" to enter. It's all in German, but try the different links. Under Portrait: "Unsere Gemeinde" will show you the Gemeindehaus or Rathaus or City Hall. I think that building edge on the left is the hotel where we stayed. Our window overlooked the view you see. Click "Bernecker Ortsprospekt", and then the link "Ortsprospekt" and you will see what is actually a brochure about the town. I have one like it and am terribly frustrated that I can't read it - especially the history of their wine making, since that's what ours did. At the bottom, you can enlarge it to 125%; it's easier to see. Note: there is a pg. 2. Click arrow at top. Click "Wo liegt Berneck?" and see a great little map of the valley. See the village Au, above Berneck? Just uphill from there, a little sign says "Haslach". The archivist in SG didn't know if it was a village or their estate, but vineyards were all over the slopes. At top, try "Behörden", etc. It will take you to a picture of the Gemeinderat (town council). Notice that the Gemeindepräsident is Jakob SCHEGG? There are 18 SCHEGGS in my data base, although none are direct ancestors - just kinsmen. When we went to the Rathaus looking for advice, he walked right past us leaving the building and we missed our chance! I was told later by a shop owner that he is an avid historian and gives talks on local history. He has an e-mail address ..... guess what I'm going to do next!! Lordy, I hope he reads English!
