Just an idle thought. > Anne- I think there were GEIGERs of various spellings in all parts of Germany, Alsace, Switzerland, etc. I do think that most of the 18th Century GEIGER emigrants came from Switzerland, Alsace, or Southwestern Germany simply because that is where the vast majority of Germanic emigrants were coming from at that time. Most of them were Protestant (mine were the exception). In later years you started to see the GEIGERS (and others) from other areas emigrate to America. Many of those were Catholic and many settled in more urban areas than the earlier settlers. Joan
My husband has a Michael NEESE (1794-1873) in Forestville, Shenandoah Co., VA, whose 2nd ggf, Mathias NEHS / NÄSS, was born in 1673 at Mitschdorf, Woerth, Alsace, France, and died in 1741/42 in Salford Twp, Philadelphia Co., PA. While studying the Shenandoah records, I remember seeing a GEIGER family. Based on what you have said, Joan, I'd be willing to bet that this GEIGER family came from Alsace!
