For cruelty and heartlessness we believe that but few cases in the history of crime can equal it. It seems that about the time stated, two men named Forbes and Krieger, obtained passes at Columbus to leave for the country. When the parties had gone about six or seven miles, they were informed that guerrillas were infesting the neighborhood, and both Forbes and Krieger thought it best to return, which they did. Krieger put up at one farmhouse, and Forbes stopped at Mrs. Hinchee's, which is situated some four miles from the town, for dinner. While at the house an old negro informed some guards that were in the vicinity that a white man had stopped at the house. The negro soldiers went there and asked Mr. Forbes for his pass; as it happened to be in the possession of Mr. Krieger who had gone on, the negroes took Forbes a prisoner and brought him back to Columbus, where, after an explanation, the authorities there furnished him another pass. Mr. Forbes again started on his journey, and when he reached the spot we have mentioned, he was again met by a number of negroes and a white officer. One of the negroes observing that Forbes was unarmed, turned around and shot him, and report says that the white officer drew his revolver at the same time, and also fired at him. At this juncture the party, not deeming their act was fool enough, stooped over the murdered man, and to make their crime more fiendish cleaved the hands of their victim from the body, and took it with them. They had gone but a short distance when they observed that the neck bone projected from the head, whereon they cut it off and threw it on the wayside. When the negroes delivered the head in Columbus it was discovered by parties who were well acquainted with the victim that it was Forbes, a discharged Tennessee soldier and a Federal scout. There is no need for us to comment on the horrid deed; the atrocity of such an act speaks for itself. _________________________________________________________________ Learn how to choose, serve, and enjoy wine at Wine @ MSN. http://wine.msn.com/
