    3. These are different folks. Mine are below. Burton Valdosta Cemetery Graves for the following Geigers are in the Valdosta Cemetery: Thomas Jackson Geiger, and Emma Taylor Geiger's children were C. Leroy Geiger, Ava Lena Geiger, Mattie Geiger, Lillian Geiger, and Kathryn Geiger. Thomas Jackson Geiger died in Madison. Later, his wife Emma Taylor Geiger had his body moved to Valdosta. The tombstones indicate: Thomas J. Geiger, Father, Died 12/16/1898 Emma Taylor Geiger, Mother, Died 5/18/1925 Mattie Geiger Williams, Sister, Died 12/21/1916 Avie Lena Geiger, Sister, 10/13/1887, 7/23/1966 Kathryn Geiger Compton, Sister, 4/26/1896 - 10/26/1981. Thomas Kirk Geiger, Brother, Georgia Seaman 2CL USNRF, 12/3/1894 - 5/20/1941. We believe USNRF stands for United States Navy Reserve Force. C. Leroy Geiger, (November 5, 1884 to March 30, 1949) is buried in the Madison Cemetery. Emma Lillian Geiger Hunter, (September 1, 1889 to January 12, 1973) is buried in the McAlpin Advent Christian Church Cemetery. Great-Grandfather Thomas Jackson Geiger/The Barber/Died of Hemoraggic Fever Great-grandfather Thomas Jackson Geiger, born May 19, 1863, died December 16, 1898 in Madison, Florida. He was only 35 at his untimely death. His body was later moved and reburied in Valdosta. Thomas J. Geiger was Emma Taylor Geiger's husband, the father of Emma Lillian Geiger, my Grandmother Hunter, and my Great Grandfather Geiger, and mother's Grandfather. Thomas J. Geiger was a barber. He shaved a man who had hemmoragic fever and he himself became infected and died. Great-Grandmother Emily Elizabeth "Emma" Taylor Geiger The considerable burden of raising Mattie, Leroy, Lena, Lillian, Kathryn, and Thomas as a widowed wife and mother must have been unimaginable. There were six children to feed with Thomas Kirk age 4 and Kathryn 2 and a half. The most that mother's Grandmother Emma Taylor Geiger weighed was 105 pounds. She died May 18, 1925. Great Grandmother Emma Taylor Geiger (died May 18, 1825) was a Taylor before she married Thomas J. Geiger. Mother often said, "He was a Taylor by name, and a Tailor by trade." Perhaps some of this natural ability to sew clothes runs in our family as both mother and Emma Jean are talented in this area. Mother won awards two years in a row in Live Oak, and Emma Jean received recognition for creating the costumes for a play at Lake City Community College. Emma Jean Fletcher Jordan has also sewn professionally. Grandmother Emma Lillian Geiger Hunter When her father died, Emma Lillian Geiger (September 1, 1889 to January 12, 1973) was a mere 9 Years 3 months 15 days or 9.291 years. She was the mother of my mother, Emma Callie Hunter. Before living in Valdosta, Emma Lillian Geiger lived in Madison until her father died. Then she moved to Valdosta, living with a cousin by the name of Hightower for two years. There were too many children living in the Hightower household and it was hard on everyone in that household. Grandmother Hunter lived in houses that were provided for cotton gin workers. She went to work at the tender age of nine in a cotton mill in Valdosta earning $.50 cents a day to support the family at a cotton mill. Sisters Lena Geiger and Mattie Geiger worked in the mill too. Obviously, working conditions in 1898 were considerably different than they are today. Need may later have had a signficant influence when she married Gus Esco Hunter, on March 1, 1904, at the age of 14 years 6 months 0 days or 14.500 years, when Gus was 21 years 2 months 20 days or 21.221 years. Gus was 6 years 8 months 20 days or 6.721 years older than Lillian Geiger. Lillian played the piano by ear, and without the benefit of formal lessons. She taught herself how to play while she, Gus Hunter, and their youngest child, Callie Hunter (Fletcher Dowdy) lived at the McAlpin Elementary School. Lillian Hunter would play the piano after the school day had ended to entertain herself and the family. Thomas Kirk Geiger Thomas Kirk Geiger, Brother, Georgia Seaman 2CL USNRF, 12/3/1894 - 5/20/1941. We believe USNRF stands for United States Naval Reserve Force. Great Uncle Thomas Kirk Geiger was 46 Years 5 Months 17 Days or 46.463 years when he died. At the time of his father's death, Grandmother Hunter's younger brother, Thomas Kirk Geiger, was a mere 4 Years 0 Months 13 Days or 4.036 Years. Immediately, the family was forced into poverty with two small children, too young to work, i.e., Thomas, age 4, and Kathryn, age 2.6 years. The dates and nature of his service as a Seaman 2nd Class in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force are unknown. Since there is a marker on his grave, it is presumed that he served his country honorably. Mother indicated that asthma killed Thomas Kirk Geiger. Preceding his death, he had pneumonia and asthma at the same time. What worked for the asthma worked against the pneumonia and vice-versa. Kathryn Geiger Compton The youngest child, Kathryn Geiger was a mere 2 years 7 months 20 days or 2.638 years at the time of her father's death. Great Aunt Kathryn was married to Steedley Compton. They lived in Jacksonville. I believe they were in the liquor or bar business. Great-Aunt Katheryn lived to be 85 years 6 months 0 days or 85.500 years at the time of her death. Mattie Geiger Williams Mattie Geiger Williams, Sister, Died 12/21/1916. It appears that Mattie died at a young age, though there is no date of birth on her tombstone. Mattie Geiger Williams, Grandmother Lillian Geiger Hunter's sister, had three children, Gladys, Billy Williams, and Fred Williams. Fred Williams lived in California. He is dead now. Gladys and H.T. Smith are buried in the Valdosta Cemetery at another location. Avie Lena Geiger Avie Lena Geiger, Sister, (October 13, 1887 to July 23, 1966). At the time of her death, Great-Aunt Lena was 68 years 9 months 10 days or 68.777 Years. My Great-Aunt Lena Geiger, grandmother Hunter's sister, was forced to stop work at the telephone office. Later, Lena was the head sales person at Levy 's Department Store in Jacksonville. Folks would drive as far as Valdosta and wait for her to wait on them as she had refined tastes. -----Original Message----- From: Paul C.
