    3. The Bryan County Cemetery Book by Davis has a reference to this place, but it is clearly not a Cemetery in the strictest sense, just a clearing in a tract of land...the marker for David is broken and on the ground, with its' base nearby...It is on private land about 100 yards off Otter Hole Branch Road, near Pembroke, and just outside the boundary of the Ft. Stewart Reservation. There are no other upright markers, covers, or anything else, for that matter; it is claimed that a White owner after Reconstruction plowed and scattered the markers on the premise that it was a Black graveyard, and he was not going to maintain it on HIS property...of course, we all know that is illegal now, but maybe it was not written law back then, just common courtesy...which sometimes failed...I know that after Reconstruction, some Whites refused burying in the same Cemetery with Blacks, although they had played together with these same Black kids when they were children before Emancipation... David is not my forebear, but his Father Abraham was...I believe it to be logical that he is also buried there, since he died before 1830 and was the owner of the land at that time...no other burial site has been located for him, or his wife Mercy, albeit some researchers claim that she went to Florida to live with her sons who had migrated there...Personally, I believe that she is the older lady in David's household on the 1840 Census for Bryan County, and that she died before 1850. >From: "Eleanor Richardson" <rich1735@bellsouth.net> >Reply-To: GABRYAN-L@rootsweb.com >To: GABRYAN-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Fw: [GABRYAN] David Geiger& mixed race cemeteries >Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2004 16:24:06 -0800 > > > > Has anyone surveyed this cemetery or taken pictures of the graves, >stones, > > markers, slabs, empty lot, etc. If so I would appreciate having a copy. > > > > Thank you very much. > > Eleanor > > > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: Tony Thompson <1roundb@pineland.net> > > Sent: Monday, February 09, 2004 11:56 AM > > Subject: Re: [GABRYAN] David Geiger& mixed race cemeteries > > > > > > > For what it is worth, in nearby Tattnall county there are whites and > > blacks > > > buried together at Old Shiloh Methodist Church.
