Ann: I have an Abram Elias Geiger, b. 3 May 1848, son of John Adam Geiger and Margaret Dormancy, and grandson of Abraham and Mary Mercy Martin. This Abram and wife Sarah Elizabeth Smith also had a son, Lorenzo Dow Geiger, b. abt 1883, d. abt 1850. Is my data all screwed up, or is this another Abram/Abraham with a son, Lorenzo D., both great grandsons of Abraham and Mary Mercy?? Help!!! Warren Tarpon Springs, FL
Warren, I hope you didn't sustain too much damage in the recent hurricanes. Anne in Central FL. Re your question ... I also have that Abram Elias GEIGER, son of John Adam GEIGER, SR., and Margaret __ (I don't have her last name). He was a grandson of Abraham GEIGER and Mercy MARTIN. Mercy's sister, Mary MARTIN, and Abraham's brother, Felix GEIGER, were my 3rd ggp's. (he died in GA; she came to FL with the children). My records show Elias married to Sarah Elizabeth SMITH on 31 Dec 1868 in Hernando (now Pasco) Co., FL. They are on the 1880 FL, Hernando census with 8 ch., b. from 1871 to 1876. Those are the only children I have listed. I feel fairly certain that your "Lorenzo Dow, b. 1883" is in error. I don't know this family well, but others on the GEIGER List who do descend from them are mentioned in my notes. I'm sure you'd learn more from them. Notes follow: ================================== On the 1850 Florida census, Marion County, Elias is found in his father's household as: "Elias A. Geiger, 3 M, b. FL." Abram Elias Geiger is listed as a member of the 2nd FL (US) Cavalry (Civil War), a Union outfit. Civil War Roster of Company A, Second Florida Cavalry, United States Army: "[Private} Abraham Elias Geiger - Born May 3, 1848, Marion Co., Fla., he, a refugee from the Confederacy, was enlisted on April 15, 1864, m. o. Nov. 29, 1865, Tallahassee. He died March 4, 1926, buried Geiger Cemetery, Zephyrhills, Fla." Christopher G. Tanner <cgtanner@email.msn.com>: "I have often heard the story that Abram Elias Geiger ( my direct ancestor ) enlisted to take care of his father, but based on enlistment dates, Elias enlisted two days earlier than John Adam Geiger." Also from Chris Tanner: " Pasco County was not established until 1887 and therefore was not a county during John Adam Geiger's lifetime. It was Hernando county most of his life. ... I am a descendant of John Adam's line through his son Abram Elias Geiger." 1880 Florida census, Hernando County, District 60, 8th Precinct, page 80, line 8, family 298: "Giger, Elias, WM 36, mar., farmer, b. FL, parents b. GA; Giger, Sarah, WF 30, wife, mar., housekeeper, b. FL, parents b. GA; children (all Giger, all b. FL, parents b. FL): John, WM 11, son; E. J., WM 9, son; S. I., WF 8, daughter; James, WM 7, son; Willis, WM 5, son; M. E., WF 4, daughter; T. A., WF 3, daughter; F. H., WF 2, daughter." Marge Stephens, Aurora, Colorado <msteve@chisp.net>: "Abram Elias, b. 3 May 1848, d. 4 Mar 1929, m. Sarah Elizabeth Smith 31 Dec 1868 in Hernando County, Florida. Both are buried in Zephyrhills, Pasco County, Florida." ================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren A. How many children did Abram Ellis have, I show 11. The second youngest was Lorenzo Dow born 1883 and died 1950. John Geiger P.S. I am glad that Mount St. Helen's blocked Florida's attempt to leave the union for a second time...... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren A. Wow, I'm up to my elbows in alligators! I never should have assumed that Warren's "Lorenzo Dow GEIGER" was an error - it's looking like there were maybe several of them. Guess I shouldn't have stuck my head out the door during that last storm - my brain is missing! Gerry, help me! I deleted your message which mentioned - I think - a fiery preacher of this name, for whom a lot of people named their sons. Or was that about someone else? I'm going to back off from this subject that I know too little about - before I make things worse. But I'd love to see all of you who are closer to it continue the conversation among yourselves ... on the List, please, so we all can learn. btw, John, I only have 8 ch. for Abram Elias GEIGER, so obviously I've missed a few!
