    3. What proof do you have that Grandfather Abraham could not write??? The fact that he made a 'Mark' on some documents is meaningless...most people made a 'Mark' as it was considered unique or fashionable...the Scrivner's copy would never attempt to duplicate the elaborate ways folks made them...Grandmother Elizabeth Martin, wife of John A. Martin, used an "E" on documents in the 1790's. I know that Grandmother Tobitha, wife of Jessie could write, albeit it is questionable that he could. Appears that all the Children of Grandfather John A. Martin could write as well as read, as Grandfather James Martin used a 'Mark' on many documents...but a signature was recorded on some...since he was a Commissioner in Bryan County, he had to read and write...and sign... I transcribed the Textual copy which was posted, and that is why you will find a lowercase 's/' before the signature, to differentiate that it was signed and not 'Marked' My guess is that Christopher Frederick Bunce had the 'Original' in his strongbox, under his bed or some other safe place... >From: <bzb@houston.rr.com> >Reply-To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce >(16 Jan 1814) >Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 10:19:50 -0500 > >Okay, see the problem I have is that "our" Abraham couldn't write, yet >whoever transcribed the deed, left the impression that everyone signed and >sealed the deed. 1. Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814)
    2. Sorry, Gerry, I'm not buying the fashionable illiteracy thing. Literacy and education were indicative of breeding and people were very proud of it. That "E" that was Elizabeth Martin's mark was probably all she could manage. There was more than one Abraham Geiger running around, and not all could write. I think we should use these clues to distinguish them. I agree that I think most of the Martin were literate (probably from their Biblical background), but Tobitha Martin is listed as being illiterate in the 1860 census. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Gieger" <giegerg@hotmail.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814) > What proof do you have that Grandfather Abraham could not write???
