    2. Sue Koller
    3. Hi All As yet I've receive no response from yesterdays posting, but I have an update and hope that there is someone out there who cares. The local library did have a bit more information on these brothers. John E. Geiger was born December 13, 1841 in Dodge County Wisconsin. He mustered into the Army on October 20, 1861 in Milwaukee. I checked my data base and didn't find him listed, hopefully you have better luck. The store was burned in 1886 when the stage driver came down with Smallpox and had slept in the backroom of the store. 3. Hi all I just ran across this tidbit while doing some research for a book on Douglas County Colorado. I also have the Geiger name in my data base of genealogy research and am connected to Jacob Kyger/Geiger of Shenandoah and Augusta Counties in VA. The Larkspur Historical society has this information on their site at : http://www.larkspurhistoricalsociety.com/Index.html Under the heading Spring Valley Timeline by Years; 1864 Jacob and John Geiger come through the area accompanying a group of Confederate prisoners enroute to Bent's Fort. Jacob Geiger was wounded and given a Civil War grant of land in Spring Valley. The Geiger Family still ranches the original homestead being the 4th generation on the ranch. The store was burned in 1886 when the stage driver came down with Smallpox and had slept in the backroom of the store. 1. Re: [GEIGER] A special request.--FROM THE ADMIN
    2. In a message dated 11/6/2003 8:45:26 PM Eastern Standard Time, bcardner@tampabay.rr.com writes: The only people I get religious/political mail from are on this list. If I write and ask them not to send, I am made to feel guilty. I do not send such things to you, and I have requested many times not to get them from you. When I do request it to stop, I then get mail from others on the list who do not even know me. If you have me on a list to which you send chain, religious, or political mails, please take me off right now. ----- Sydney- I've been thinking how to respond to your message because I have to say any message that begins by saying "If Joan wishes to unsub me for this, I will understand" kinda makes me cringe. It makes me cringe even more when it comes from a long-time, valued, contributor to the list. Two other aspects of your message also make me cringe a bit and that is first that you feel guilty (or that you feel you would be made to feel guilty) about writing to *anyone* privately and requesting that religious, political or any other non-genealogical messages and chain letters not be forwarded to you -- this would have been my recommendation to you had you written to me privately and asked my advice in the matter. Second, it makes me cringe a bit to think that anyone would use the list subscriber email addresses for any means other genealogical contacts and exchange of information UNLESS both parties have expressed an interest in exchanging other information. Don't assume others share your political, religious or other non-genealogy beliefs. A wise person once said (and I don't remember who is was) "why is that people who insist on telling me about their beliefs, don't ever want to hear about mine." <g> I don't even want to know who did what or what took place, I only hope all parties involved will heed Sydney's message and my comments above. I think many on this list think of themselves as a family--the GEIGER list has a bit different history than many surname lists and most of you know the GEIGER surname research is *special* to me as it is to many others on this list. Many on the list are also true "biological cousins" and have much information to share with one another. I would hazard a guess that this is possibly how this all started--cousins assuming cousins shared more than genealogical interests. I hope the close sharing of genealogical information will continue in the future but we must realize it IS a genealogy list first and foremost and that we come from a variety of ethnic, religious, and political as well as geographic backgrounds and must respect everyone's rights and beliefs--plus everyone's right not to receive email they didn't request. Enough said! Joan, administrator

    3. If Joan wishes to unsub me for this, I will understand. However, perhaps this is the only way I can make my point. The only people I get religious/political mail from are on this list. Joan, you may do what you have to do about unsubbing me. I will no longer go through this and be made to feel guilt, anger, and frustration. I do not have to have your views, and I do not have to keep explaining mine. Sydney

    1. Re: [GEIGER] Emily Geiger
    2. Harriet Imrey
    3. The early source documents about Emily Geiger, plus the later legendary material, are included on Dr. Frank Clark's Rev War site at http://sciway3.net/clark/revolutionarywar/geigeroutline.html. The reports from the historians (Ellett in 1848 and Lossing in 1852) are brief. Fiction writer Timothy Shay Arthur specialized in morally-improving tales and etiquette guides for young readers. He included his lengthy version of the Emily Geiger story in a collection of short stories published in 1852. John A. Chapman borrowed the Arthur story (verbatim and without attribution) for his 1892 Annals of Newberry and for his SC school textbooks. He made only one small change: he moved Emily's place-of-residence to Newberry County. He lived there, and was writing a book about it, so why not Newberry? Historian Lossing was quite explicit that she lived in Fairfield District. He added this detail to the Ellett account after an interview with William Cayce, whose wife was a cousin of Emily Geiger. She could not have lived anywhere else, since Gen. Greene was in Winnsboro at the time he learned the news that was supposedly delivered by Emily to Sumter. There was exactly one Geiger household in that region in 1778-9 (Jury Lists), in 1788 (church incorporation documents) and in 1790 (census), and that was the family of John Geiger (b. 1721), son of Abraham. The Threewits plantation was a few miles to the north of them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Ford" <jlfchat@earthlink.net> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 22, 2003 10:48 AM Subject: [GEIGER] Emily Geiger > I would love to be able to trace the ancestry of Emily Geiger, the Revolutionary heroine. 3. Felix GEIGER [b. 1763 Saxe Gotha, SC - d. 1827 Wayne Co., GA] was a son of Hans Ulrich GEIGER [1730 SWT - 1777 Effingham Co., GA]. His father was brought from SWT to SC as a small boy and later removed his own family to GA. Sometime after Felix died, his widow Mary MARTIN and all children, including son Felix, Jr., removed to Florida. The children were: Jacob; John; Rachel [BOATRIGHT]; Allen; Felix, Jr.; Mary [MARTIN] and Margaret [JOHNS]. You will find a tremendous amount of material on this GYGER/GEIGER line from Canton St. Gallen, SWT in the archives of this list - over the past several years. The only one that I, for sure, know went "west" was Jesse [b. 1793 - d. 1871 Covington Co., MS], son of Abraham, son of Hs. Ulrich. I think he spelled his name GIEGER which is much closer to the actual pronunciation of the Swiss GYGER. 3. Hello- This is a long shot and one you may have tried. Go to switchboad.com. Key in his name. It will take you a while but if he has a telephone or a computer he will be on that site.
