    3. Literacy was uncommon among the German-speaking settlers of frontier SC and GA. This was one reason that clergymen were desired so strongly: not only could they read the Bible, but they had the other "clerical" skill of writing, and could be trusted to draft a document in the way the buyer and seller desired it. The parties to the transaction, and their witnesses, normally put their individual marks on it. Later (sometimes much later, and sometimes not at all) the original document was presented to a local J.P., and one of the witnesses attested verbally that he had seen the buyer and seller make their marks. So the J.P. put a legal seal (LS) by those two marks on his own Fair Copy of the original document, took that one to the Register, who entered his own copy into the official record book. In some times-and-regions, the J.P.s (and Registers) attempted to replicate the nature of the marks; in others they just entered (X) or (his mark) to show that it was a mark rather! than a signature. If a person had the skill of signing his own name (or--rarely--her own name), he did it every time, because it was a matter of great pride. The British legal term for the individually-identifiable mark was sigil. A signature was a special case of a sigil, and signatures became more common towards the close of the 18th century. Even in small communities, there were often two or more persons with the same name whose signatures might look similar (unless one was in German Gothic script, the other in British copperplate). Then the older one might add "Sr." and the younger one "Jr.", implying no particular relationship between them. This also became confusing, because Jr. might die or move away and an older one move in, so old Sr. is suddenly a new Jr. The next step was to add a distinctive ornate squiggle beneath the signature, in order to prove which of the same-named persons had signed that particular document. John Hancock and other signers of the Declaration of Independence used florid squiggles for the purpose of identifying themselves. The squiggle even has its own legal term: it's a "paraph", as I disc! overed quite recently! If you have an old legal dictionary, or even an unabridged one, check out the official meaning of "paraphernalia" while on that page--it's an entertaining entry. Some of the late 18th-c. and early 19th-c. deeds, in Fair Copy or registered copy, use the abbreviation "s" before a list of names. The "s" is for sigil, which implies either a mark or a signature--but one that the witness testified was personally made by the named person. It does not imply that the parties were, or were not, literate. Harriet Imrey himrey@ntelos.net

    3. There was one other reference to a "Thomas" Geiger in Saxegotha in 1772. Both that one, and the 1748 reference, were mis-transcriptions of "Herman" (of all things!)--identifiable because of multiple other references to the same transaction in which the name clearly says Herman/Harmon Geiger. The place to find a Thomas Geiger (and his wife Mary) is in the Ebenezer Church and on the Ogeechee in GA. No references to him, or to a Philip Geiger, in SC. ----- Original Message ----- From: <bzb@houston.rr.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 10:26 PM Subject: Re: [GEIGER] SC grants to GA Geigers? > Or who was the Thomas Geiger in Orangeburg born before 1725? > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "susan wilson" <hrw3@worldnet.att.net> > To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 11:55 PM > Subject: Re: [GEIGER] SC grants to GA Geigers? > > > > Harriet...... > > > > Do you have any idea who Philip belongs to? > > > > Susan > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Harriet Imrey" <himrey@ntelos.net> > > To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> > > Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 4:10 PM > > Subject: Re: [GEIGER] SC grants to GA Geigers? Nobody has traced the ancestry of these brothers, because they left no male descendants in the Colonies. They emigrated from Beihingen-am-Neckar in Württemberg, Germany, and first show up in SC records in Aug 1755. At that time, Jacob Geiger had a wife Mary, a daughter Mary, 3 indentured servants and 2 slaves. The first grant was south of the Edisto near Purrysburgh. In 1757, both Michael and Jacob were Petit Jurors in St. Bartholomew Parish. Michael married Margaret, widow of Daniel Gelzer, but he survived her, left all his property to brother Jacob. Per Jacob's will of 23 Sep 1769, his daughter (and only child) Mary was unmarried then. He mentioned brothers Hans Georg (deceased) and John Frederick, both still in Beihingen. All of the SC land references to Jacob and Michael Geiger are in Charlestown Precinct, although in four separate parishes (they owned a lot of land). The other 6 adult Jacob Geigers in SC at the time all lived in the backcountry, in Saxegotha, Craven County, and the Dutch Fork.

    1. Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814)
    2. Sorry, Gerry, I'm not buying the fashionable illiteracy thing. Literacy and education were indicative of breeding and people were very proud of it. That "E" that was Elizabeth Martin's mark was probably all she could manage. There was more than one Abraham Geiger running around, and not all could write. I think we should use these clues to distinguish them. I agree that I think most of the Martin were literate (probably from their Biblical background), but Tobitha Martin is listed as being illiterate in the 1860 census. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Gieger" <giegerg@hotmail.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814) > What proof do you have that Grandfather Abraham could not write??? 3. Oops! I meant Abraham's "mark". This could very well be true, but Abraham's grandson, Winfield Wickliff was well educated. This is my photocopy of the OFFICIAL COPY in "Deeds Mortgages, Book AAA, 1814-1819," on file at Bulloch County Courthouse, Statesboro, GA. That's why all the signatures are in same handwriting. If you look down at the bottom, you will see "Recorded January 28th, 1815. Ely Kennedy, CSCBC." It's Ely's handwriting! (The next deed below it (recorded __ 1815) has to do with a marriage contract between John LINES and Sarah Ann ROBINSON who, along with her father Jonathan ROBINSON, are later found in the records of Gadsden County, FL.) By the way, on the previous page is a second GEIGER deed I later found they hadn't copied for me. It's the one filed at same time, stating that the sibs have sold one-fifth or 60 acres of the original grant to brother John GEIGER. Signed: Felix GEIGER, Abraham GEIGER, Mary HOFMAN and Cornelius GEIGER (no wives). Page numbering is off and A. K. Register's "Bulloch Co., GA, Genealogical Source Material", p. 52, had mis-shown both deeds on same page. I will post her extract on the Message Board. 3. What proof do you have that Grandfather Abraham could not write??? The fact that he made a 'Mark' on some documents is meaningless...most people made a 'Mark' as it was considered unique or fashionable...the Scrivner's copy would never attempt to duplicate the elaborate ways folks made them...Grandmother Elizabeth Martin, wife of John A. Martin, used an "E" on documents in the 1790's. I know that Grandmother Tobitha, wife of Jessie could write, albeit it is questionable that he could. Appears that all the Children of Grandfather John A. Martin could write as well as read, as Grandfather James Martin used a 'Mark' on many documents...but a signature was recorded on some...since he was a Commissioner in Bryan County, he had to read and write...and sign... I transcribed the Textual copy which was posted, and that is why you will find a lowercase 's/' before the signature, to differentiate that it was signed and not 'Marked' My guess is that Christopher Frederick Bunce had the 'Original' in his strongbox, under his bed or some other safe place... >From: <bzb@houston.rr.com> >Reply-To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce >(16 Jan 1814) >Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 10:19:50 -0500 > >Okay, see the problem I have is that "our" Abraham couldn't write, yet >whoever transcribed the deed, left the impression that everyone signed and >sealed the deed. 3. Perhaps there were two "Originals" made in NC...I know that the Owner always wanted to have a signed copy in his possession, so that he could prove ownership, in case someone else tried to claim his land...and if the Courthouse burned, which most in the South did at one time or other, he would have no proof... >From: JYoung6180@aol.com >Reply-To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [GEIGER] Heirs of Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 >Jan 1814) >Date: Tue, 25 May 2004 11:11:46 EDT > >In a message dated 5/25/2004 9:22:07 AM Eastern Standard Time, >giegerg@hotmail.com writes: >In the days you speak of, there were no photocopy machines - they had not >yet been invented...documents were prepared and folks met and signed; >afterward the Court Scrivner copied the Original for the Official Court >Record and returned the Original to the individual, as his Proof that he >held Title to the property. 2. Harriet Imrey
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Geiger" <jgeiger@sc.rr.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 6:03 PM Subject: Re: [GEIGER] SC grants to GA Geigers? > Harriett- > I have not seen Micheal's name before or if I have it did not register. Few of those warrants resulted in a grant, because the land had been awarded within the Creek Nation, and it was only the Cherokees who had recently been defeated and shoved westwards. However, ~60,000 acres of GA land was actually awarded by SC grants....until the British Board of Trade found out about it and told the SC government to stop doing that! Gov. Boone said of course he could, since SC was supposed to extend to the 29 degree latitude. He was informed (by the Crown) that this land was due to be added to GA. In 1767, the SC government was ordered to send the grants to GA so they could be recorded there. Michael Geiger died in 1767, brother Jacob in 1769. Both had substantial estates (personal property as well as land), but no lands in GA!

Considering the time that it was written we should be happy we have it. The current Geiger decendants should be extremely pleased that we have so much written and documented about our fore-fathers and mothers. Most do not. The other side of my family, Speck, can not find any thing previous to 1773 and the early information is quite spotty. So be content that you have a true copy of the document and that one question has been settled-that Mercy is Mercy and not Mary. The document provides a wealth of historical information. John Geiger

I believe this to be the land that the children later divide." Could you post that one, too? Ulrich's grant was on the Great Ogeechee. 1. Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814)

    3. Beverly, how often have we seen a truly "original" deed? This is my photocopy of the OFFICIAL COPY in "Deeds & Mortgages, Book AAA, 1814-1819," on file at Bulloch County Courthouse, Statesboro, GA. 2. Okay, see the problem I have is that "our" Abraham couldn't write, yet whoever transcribed the deed, left the impression that everyone signed and sealed the deed. So if there's THAT mistake, what others are there? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Connell" <rconnell@cfl.rr.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 25, 2004 9:55 AM Subject: [GEIGER] Official copy: Ulrich Kegar Deed to Christopher Bunce (16 Jan 1814) > Beverly, how often have we seen a truly "original" deed?
