Surnames: Geiger, Stolzenbach, Aurand, Mills Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JOY.2ACEB/911 Message Board Post: George A. Geiger married Millie (aka Mildred) Mills approximately 1916 in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, or South Dakota probably. They had a son, Robert Paul Geiger (my father), b. 05 Sep 1916 in Findlay, Ohio. In the 1930 census George stated he was a veteran of WWI. In 1920 they were in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. A son, Donald Ray Geiger (aka Roland) was b. 14 Aug 1925, Fostoria, Ohio. George married Hazel ________. Their daughter, LaRue Geiger, was b. abt 1928 in Illinois. This family was in Lima, Ohio in 1930. Donald was raised by Miss Mary Stolzenbach in Lima, Ohio. Donald's obituary in 1944 states his father is in Fremont, Ohio (where he was a chef at Hotel Fremont) and LaRue is in Cleveland, Ohio. If anyone can provide more information (anything)on this family I would appreciate it. Attached is Donald's high school photo from Lima Central 1943. I would very much like to have other photos of "Donnie", his mother, sister, father. Don Geiger als! o had a half-brother, Richard Aurand, and at least one half-sister. I do not know George Geiger's parents or family or when or where he died. He also had a daughter whose name I think was Mary. Thanks---Bobbie Jean

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JOY.2ACEB/910.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Bingo! - after a fashion. The 1920 listing is under Geo GIRGER - line 12. Information is exactly as you described, except his age is transcribed as 24, and that is debatable. Unfortunately it provides nothing to help refine the search for a 1910 listing. His birthplace is US and that of his parents appears to have been Un (Unknown) later written over as US. I am attaching a copy as a GIF file. There is a Henry C. Geiger, 52, IL, in Souix Falls in 1920, with wife and daughter, but the daughter is 22 and born in SD so relevance is only speculative. I suggest that you send in a request for a copy of your father's birth certificate. Donald's may or may not be repetitive. LaRue's might also be interesting. Since George A.'s birthplace is proving difficult to pin down, the goal would be to find something that has his parents' names on it. Another way to go at this is thorough the marriage licenses. Since your grandmother was fairly young when she married, there is a good chance they were married in her home county (unless they made a run for it). You will need to go through the proper county Probate Court for this, so you need to know the county or make an educated guess. Your father's birth certificate may help confirm the location. I see that Hazel was born in Iowa, so it's possible that that marriage occurred there also. However her maiden name (and place of birth?), from LaRue's birth certificate may give you a chance of finding that marriage license as well. These are a couple of options that should give you primary source information, and it looks like that is what you'll need to make progress on this investigation.

S. ----------------------------- In 1920 my George Geiger was in Sioux Falls, SD, Minnehaha Cty; age 34, waiter in hotel, wife Millie (my grandmother), age 20 (her birthday was 11 Feb 1899, son Robert P.(my father), age 3 (b. 05 Sep 1916). Also my Grandmother's sister, Emma Mills, age 18, was with them, a chambermaid in hotel. Grandma said George was b. 1884 Chicago. That does not mean it was so. ------------------------- If, as stated in 1930, his 1st marriage was 18 yrs before, that would be 1912? None of the records seem to match up. ------------------ I am assuming that George and Hazel were divorced. In Donald's obit it states his father was in Fremont. My father, mother, brother, and I, along with my grandmother and her sister, had a meal at the Hotel Fremont where George was chef. This was probably early 1944 when Dad was home on furlough. Also in Donaldl's obit it states his sister LaRue was in Cleveland. Since she would only have been about 15, she was probably with her mother. In 1916 George was supposedly a chef at Ft Findlay Hotel in Findlay OH. ---------------- Sometime later 1944 George visited us in Fostoria, OH. Dad was away in army. Perhaps his purpose was to tell Dad that his full brother had been killed in the war. But he didn't. It was after that my grandmother and her sister brought the photo of Roland (Donald) with the explanation. George disappeared and my father never saw him again. He was contacted by lawyers after his father's death, sometime in the 1960s. ------------------ It is very sad that my father did not know his young brother was growing up in Lima, so near. I suppose it was considered best at the time. Evidently Mary Stolzenbach was in contact with George Geiger. Donald had a nice life, well provided for. My father was not. I don't know that any of this helps us find George's family. I have so little to go on and none of it seems to be conclusive. I keep hoping someone will recognize photos or some scrap of information. Thanks for your interest. Bobbie Jean

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JOY.2ACEB/910.1 Message Board Post: Do you have information from the 1930 Census for George A. Geiger regarding his age, place of birth, occupation, and parents' places of birth? I looked through some of the 1910 and 1920 Census listings in Allen Co. and the only George I found was the 1920 listing for the George F. Geiger you mentioned earlier. Harriette is the head of household and he is listed as 'husband'. He was a cook in a restaurant at that time. There are not many George A. Geiger listings. I found one, age 21 in 1920, born OH, who was a soldier at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, MD. Or it could be that A. stands for Albert or Arthur and he's listed that way. There were several of those, assuming that he was in Allen Co. You may want to think about another way to go at this. You should be able to get copies of birth certificates for George A.'s children. Since they are born after 1908 you can go through the Ohio Department of Health, Vital Statistics. I would try children of both marriages. Hopefully this will get you at least two shots at finding marriage licenses. You will need to know the county in order to do this, but there may be parents, locations, ages and so on here. A death certificate for George A. is another possibility to consider. Regards, Richard

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JOY.2ACEB/909.2 Message Board Post: I thought I might have some luck finding your George Geiger in the census listings, but it's not turning out to be so easy. There is no GEIGER born in IL in the 1910 or 1920 Census for Ohio - not one. Did not check alternate spellings though. Or perhaps he is still in Illinois. There are a couple listings in Clinton Co., which I see you posted earlier, ages off a couple years. What do you have on your George to help identify him, like his wife's name? Ruby or Dolly perhaps? Where and when was his earliest Ohio residence? And so on. Your local library may subscribe to HeritageQuest, which provides census information on line, if you'd rather do your own research. That's what I'm using. My Geiger line consists of the descendants of John Jacob and A. Catherine Geiger, who immigrated with their children from the area near Eppingen, Baden (close to Heidelberg), around 1825. They settled in SE Stark Co., OH, an area which was soon incorporated into the newly formed Carroll Co. I've pretty well wrapped things up except for a few early female siblings for whom I can't find marriages. I'll be glad to take another look for your George, if you like. Just need some way to tell that I've got him, when I find him.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JOY.2ACEB/909.1 Message Board Post: Although I am not familiar with this Geiger line, I did a little research on George F. Geiger, based on the information that you posted. In the absence of further discoveries, I do not see a relationship between him and the George A Geiger that you mentioned. Here is what I found on George F. Geiger (based on age, wife’s name, etc., it appears that there is only this one). 1920 Census – No match found 1910 Census – 3rd Ward Galion, Crawford Co. OH: G. F. Geiger, age 36, OH, Father born At Sea, Mother born NJ Wife: Harriette Geiger, age 36, OH, both parents born OH. Married two years. No children. This seems to eliminate George A. as a son of George F., unless he is less than 20 years old in 1930, but with a child over 4 years old, that seems unlikely. 1900 Census – 4th Ward Lima, Allen Co., OH: Geo. F. Geiger, age 26, OH, JAN 1874, Father born At Sea, Mother born OH*, Brother-in-law. Head of household: Frank H. Simons, age 31. Wife: Mary G. Simons, age 31, OH, Father born At Sea, Mother born NJ Also found at this census location: Geo. E. Geiger, age 60, born AT SEA, parents born Germany. Married 10 years Wife: Teresa E. Geiger, age 36, OH, one child [1/1], and son, Donald M., age 7, OH. 1880 Census – Kossuth, Auglaize Co. OH: George Geiger, age 40, Atlantic Ocean, parents Germany. Wife: Almira Geiger, age 40, NJ Children: Delmer Geiger, age 13, OH; two daughters, George F. Geiger, age 6, OH. As for Delmer Geiger: 1900 Census – 4th Ward Lima, Allen Co., OH: Demer* E. Geiger, age 33 OH, Wife: Sarah R. Geiger, Age 36 … Married 10 years. Two children [2/2] both daughters. 1910 Census – 3rd Ward Bucyrus, Crawford Co., OH: Delmer E. Geiger, age 43, Lodger. No family members listed, however it says second marriage, married 7 years, no children [0/0]. 1920 Census – Wyandot, Crawford Co. OH: Delmer E. Geiger, are 51, OH Wife: Laura E. Geiger. Mother-in-law: Sarah J. Shupp. No others in household. That pretty well eliminates the possibility that George A. is a son of Delmer and a nephew to George F. It does leave the possibility that George A. could be the descendant of an unknown brother of George E. or it may just be a coincidence.
