Stephen (Not Samuel) Riggs was the husband of Rachel Martin, daughter of John A. Martin. Allen Bethel who married Abigail Riggs was the son of Felix Jr, (not Sr.) Felix Sr. married Mary Martin daughter of John A. Martin of Bulloch/Bryan/Effingham Counties of GA. Felix Sr. was born in SC, not GA...The 1767 Royal Land Grant on the Great Ogeechee which Ulrich received contained a statement that he had four children when he migrated from SC. These are supposed to be Abraham, Felix (Sr.), John, and Mary as they are listed as Heirs when the property was sold in 1814. Mary knows that, Gerry. She meant to say Stephen. Good idea to reaffirm it, though. However, Allen (Bethel) GEIGER was a son of Felix, SR. and Mary MARTIN. Felix, JR., was his next younger brother. I have the sibs as: Jacob S. (c. 1797), John Martin (1798 - my ancester), Rachel (c. 1800), Allen Bethel (26 Oct 1802 - Mary's ancester), Felix, Jr. (6 Feb. 1804), Mary (1 July 1806), and perhaps Margaret (betw. 1814 and 1816). I don't have proof that Margaret belongs in this family. My too-brief notes only say: < From Dot Miller: "Archibald H. JOHNS, born May 12, 1810, married 1. Margaret PREVATT; 2. Margaret GEIGER; 3. Addie ROBERTS. Margaret Geiger and Archibald had six children." The 1850 Florida census, Columbia Co. (29 October), shows on page 60-A, line 12, family 198: "Archibald H. JOHNS, 40 M, farmer, $1,000, b. GA; Margaret Johns, 36 F, b. GA; Jacob Johns, 15 M, b. FL, John H. Johns, 9 M, b. FL, Irvin Johns, 8 M, b. FL, Jeremiah Johns, 6 M, b. FL, Mary M. Johns, 4 F, b. FL, Laura P. Johns, 1 F, b. FL." Note: If this is the Margaret GEIGER who is the daughter of Felix GEIGER, SR., she seems a bit young for her sibs, who were born from 1798 to 1806. > I'm not sure we agree on the order of birth of Ulrich's first 4 ch., but anyhow, don't forget No. 5, Rachel, b. 1769 (Ebenezer Record Book), d. perhaps before 1815 settlement of her father's estate. Her older brother Felix, Sr., gave a daughter that name in abt. 1800. Cornelius was No. 6. The American colonies based their currency systems on the British one (12 pence to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pound), but the rates-of-exchange differed a great deal from year to year and across provinces. The common denominator was the British pound sterling, although the coin actually used in most New World transactions was the Spanish peso/piece-of-eight. By 1774, the rate of exchange was 1.75 North Carolina pounds per British pound (also equal to 7 South Carolina pounds). So Riggs received roughly £4 sterling. There's no good way to convert that to 21st-century purchasing-power, since money didn't have the same meanings in an 18th-century agricultural economy. The Quit Rent (property) tax rate in SC was 3 or 4 shillings per 100 acres. Some people felt that was so high that they never got around to paying them. The estimate of £4 sterling happens to be the usual cost of a one-way transatlantic passage for an adult in the 1700's, although people who took the £6 voyages had a better chance of getting enough food and water en route. The cost of passage was equal to two month's salary for a manual laborer in Europe. In the US in 2000-2004, that would be around $4000-$5000. So the 6.19.6 in NC money that Riggs got as payment for militia services would have been a lot of money, but not enough to retire on. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Maryp5243@aol.com> To: <GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 27, 2004 8:32 AM Subject: [GEIGER] Samuel Riggs...and daughter Abigail Riggs > Your message on Samuel Riggs is very timely - as I just received this message (below) on the Riggs list. It seems conclusive that Mercy is the daughter of John A. Martin of Bulloch/Bryan County GA because of the Deed for Lot 58 in Baldwin (now Randolph) County which was sold in 1810 following his death. The Deed for that Lot 58 is signed by his sons Elijah and James Martin, Abraham Geiger, Felix Geiger, and Stephen Riggs. See: <http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=message&r=rw&p=surnames.geiger&m=638.1> It is known that Stephen Riggs was the husband of John's daughter Rachel (Martin) Riggs, and that Felix Geiger was the husband of John's daughter Mary (Martin) Geiger; therefore there was absolutely no reason for Abraham to have signed except that his wife Mercy was also the daughter of John A. Martin... What is unclear at this point is who their mother was...It appears that she may have been the Elizabeth Martin who is listed as his wife in Deeds during the late 1790's, and apparently she died before John gave the POA for Lot 58 to James Martin in 1809. Nothing else is recorded for her at this point, at least that has been discovered; however, the records of the areas of PA, from which the German Baptist Brethren Martin's came, have not been fully explored...I started this last year when I filed my Supplemental SAR Applications, and need to take it up again, as I let it lie while they were reviewing my applications...(I now have some Questions to respond to.) Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/JOY.2ACEB/920 Message Board Post: Hi everyone, I am just starting my Geiger research and already I have a huge brick wall. I have been successful at tracing my Geiger line back to a Michael Geiger who appears in the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1860 he is in Marlborough, Montgomery, Pennsylvania and in 1870 he shows up in Upper Hanover, Montgomery, Pennsylvania. The census images show he had atleast six children with wife Sarah. Elizabeth - b. abt. 1843 Emeline - b. abt. 1845 Henry - b abt. May 1849 Magdalena - b. abt. 1851 Etta - b. abt. 1854 Jesse - b. abt. Sep 1858 Because the images also show that all the children and wife Sarah were born in Pennsylvania I expected to find Michael in the 1850 census, but needless to say, I could not find in anywhere, nor could I find him in surrounding states. The 1880 census also, I can not even track down Henry or Jesse in Pennsylvania or surrounding states. Jesse and Henry later make appearances in the 1900 and 1910 census' back in Montgomery County. Also, so far I have not been able to locate them in any local churches for these areas of Montgomery County. So, the images indicated that Michael was born in Wurttemburg, so currently I am doing reearch on all the Geiger's said to have been born in Wurttemburg who were living in Pennsylvania in 1860. My hope is that I can find a brother or sister to Michael, but no luck so far. If anyone has run across this family, or has any suggestions, please contact me. my email is jaevanson@yahoo.com Thank you very much, James Austin Evanson
