    1. [GEIGER-L] Re: Johannes Geiger, born Franklin Township, PA--what county?
    2. In a message dated 98-06-22 13:08:13 EDT, you write: > So far we know that a Johannes Geiger was confirmed in 1819 in Westmoreland > County and that he was baptized in North Annville, in what is now Dauphin > County, in 1798 at Quitopahilla Church. I want to correct an error in the above statement. Quitopahilla Church was in North Annville which was in 1798 in Dauphin County, but is now in Lebanon County--Lebanon County was created from Dauphin and Lancaster in 1813. Sorry! Joan

I also got a message from Helen Fest telling me there is a Franklin Township in Washington County. It looks like I will need to do a bit more detective work before I figure this one out. I think my next step is to look for records in any Lutheran Churches in the counties with Franklin Townships. Especially since this Benjamin and family are missing from the census in 1800 as far as I can tell. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] Johannes Geiger, born Franklin Township, PA--what county?
    2. I am attempting to help a fellow Geiger researcher and also working on Westmoreland County, PA Geiger information for my own research. So far we know that a Johannes Geiger was confirmed in 1819 in Westmoreland County and that he was baptized in North Annville, in what is now Dauphin County, in 1798 at Quitopahilla Church. The confirmation certificate says that Johannes was born in Franklin Township, Dauphin County. However, I am told by those who research in that area that there is (and never was) a Franklin Township, in this area. My question is this. We know that the confirmation certificate is in error as to the township that Johannes Geiger, son of Benjamin and Catharine Geiger, was born. Might there be confusion with a Franklin Township in Westmoreland County? Does anyone know if there is a Franklin Township in Westmoreland? If so, is there a Lutheran Church in that township that might be the one the confirmation certificate that we have came from? It is not listed on the certificate itself. Thanks, Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] translations for the German in the Alsace Geiger records

Occupations: Schneider=tailor Schulmeister=Schoolmaster Hofsattlemeister=estate saddler--saddle-maker Schuhmacher=shoemaker Pfarrer=minister Pfrtner=porter or door-keeper translations of German passages: von ihrem Vetter dem Sattler-Michel Geyer-Begraben=buried by their cousin the saddler Michel Geyer (probably means buried at his expense) Uber die Stadtmauer gefallen=fell over the city wall welcher nach Straburg geflohen und von dannen krank wiederkommen=who fled to Strassburg and then from sickness returned (he didn't just leave--he fled--and returned in sickness) spter in Ltzelstein=formerly from Ltzelstein Sebastian Geiger--I had stated he was Master Juror for one year--it is more like the Chief Judge in American terms. 1. [GEIGER-L] Amanda Township, Fairfield County, Ohio Kigers
    2. I just found a new Kiger looking for her family tree. I hope Catherine Moon won't mind my posting this information to the list (she is not yet a subscriber) since I know that several of our list members will be interested in adding this to their files on this Kiger family. Catherine's message follows and it includes some new information (at least to me) on the descendants of Lyman Barr and Sarah Kiger. Sarah is the daughter of John Kiger and Elizabeth Bollenbaugh and John Kiger is the son of Henry Kiger and Polly Walduck. Henry of course is the son of George Kiger and his wife Margaret. "Lyman Barr's father was an Edward Barr. I don't know who Edward Barr married, nor do I know dates for Lyman or Edward (I wish I did; that's another thing on my list I'm working on). I only have one child listed for Lyman Barr and Sarah Kiger (thank you for filling in her first name for me!). There were probably other children, but I only have one listed on my file so far. The child I have for Lyman Barr and Sarah Kiger is John "Edward" Barr b.13Nov1867 Amanda Township, OH d.01May1917 Pickaway Co., OH buried in Amanda, OH. John "Edward" Barr married Minnie Tipton on 15Sep1892. Minnie Tipton was b.28Jan1870 in Royalton, OH d.25Jul1948. Minnie Tipton and John "Edward" Barr had three children." At this point Catherine gave me more information but many of the people listed are still living so I won't post that information to the list without Catherine's permission. If anyone has additional information to add to Catherine's file I would be happy to relay the information to her. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] Wetzel and Monongalia County, WV 1860 census records
    2. I just had the opportunity to check the 1860 census listings for Wetzel and Monongalia County, WV for 1860 (don't forget that WV was still a part of VA at this time) and found the following: Wetzel County: James Kiger, age 63 in Pine Grove P.O., page 59 (just above the entry for his son William below). (can't read entry for where born --but he was born in PA) William P. Kiger, Pine Grove P.O. page 59, age 28 (all born PA but entry too faint to read) Julia age 25 Martha P. age 3 Mary U. age 3 James D. age 2 Rachel Ann age too faint to read--but it is a fraction of a year. Charles Kiger, Pine Grove P.O., page 59, age 46, born PA, (appears one entry below the listing for William above) Sarah A. age 44, born PA Nancy age 17 (looks like 11 but should be 17 as she is listed in this position on the record) born PA Margaret age 16, born PA Helen Ann age 14, born VA Cynthie age 11, born VA Elizabeth age 8, born VA Barbara age 6, born VA Sarah J. age 4, born VA Jacob L. age 1, born VA >From other sources I know that Nancy would have been 17, and that Jacob Lindsay died in 1876, Helen is actually Ella Ann, and that the maiden name of Sarah A. is Davis. >From other evidence I know that James Kiger had another son George W. Kiger born about 1820. Where is George W. Kiger in 1860? Monongalia County: Fielding Kiger, age 73, Morgantown, Tanner, page 14, born VA. James Demaine, 28, born England Caroline Demaine, 25, born VA Mary B. Demaine, 7, born VA Asa O'Kelley 15 day laborer, born VA NOTE: occasionally Fielding Kiger appears as Fielding Kyger on some records. George Kiger, Morgantown, age 47, born VA (entry is just above Fielding Kiger), tanner, Mary, age 41, born VA Andrew, 17 (children all born VA) Virginia, 15 Winfield, 13 Fielding, 12 Mary E., 7 George, 5 Nathan, 2 John 2/12 Mary Conner, 67, born VA (could this be the mother-in-law?) Jacob Kiger, age 35, tanner, Morgantown (all entries born VA), (appears one entry below Fielding Kiger) Elizabeth, 26 Olivia, 11 Norvel, 6 Jacob N., 2 George O'Kelley, age 15, day laborer, born VA (is he the twin to Asa above?) Barbara Kiger, age 49, (all entries born PA) Wadestown, page 288-289 Charles, 32 (note it clearly says age 32 but Charles should be age 22) Mary, 17 Peter, 15 Nikolas 11 Ewing, 7 >From other evidence it is clear that this is Barbara Hochstetler/Hostutler, widow of Nicholas Kiger (younger brother to James Kiger listed above in Wetzel County) and that these are all of their children still living at home in 1860. Can anyone determine the relationship between Fielding Kiger, born about 1787, of Monongalia County, WV, and James Kiger of Wetzel County. I feel certain there is one. Could Fielding Kiger be a younger brother of James' father Charles Kiger born about1770-1774? Joan

Yes, Leonard Geiger is somewhat of a mystery to me and Lorenz Geiger I have found nowhere other than the Henckel genealogy. The fact that Leonard's name appears in one Maryland record in connection with the Troxels make me suspect a previous connection with that family in Berks- Lehigh-Northampton PA where the Troxels and Geigers were closely allied. Here's a family group that may be "connected." It is a > work in progress at best. Would appreciate comments. Dorothy, it would seem that the newly located will of Susanna Geiger would force a revision to your FGS (in progress). The way I would read it is that Susanna Saylor married twice--first to Martin Harry, Jr. and with his she had the following children probably in this order: Jacob Harry John Harry Elizabeth Harry George Martin Harry Amelia Harry It would then appear that he died and she remarried an unknown Geiger and had the following children from the second marriage: Jacob Geiger Frances Geiger Eleanor Geiger Henrietta Geiger My guess would be that Frances didn't marry a Geiger, she WAS a Geiger (or perhaps she was a Geiger who married a Geiger). I have my suspicions that the son Jacob Geiger may be the Jacob Geiger that shows up in the History of Washington County, MD in 1813 as a Private in the Hagerstown Militia. There is also an entry about Rev. Jacob Geiger, Ref. minister in Carroll County, MD from 1823-1848 who died 19 Oct. 1848 at the age of 55 years and 2 days making his birthdate 17 Oct. 1793. His first wife was a daughter of Jacob and Mary Seltzer. The first wife died in 1835. In Hagerstown records I also found the following other Geigers: John Geiger and Jas. 3. Thank you Sara! I have old letters that were written in the 50s regarding the settlement of my grandmother's estate in Germany. It was a huge estate, with a factory and she built it up after her husband died in 1905. Raised her children with the help of a nanny. I have gorgeous pictures of the home and the backyard scenes when my father was a child. Gorgeous pictures in perfect shape. She sent pictures of my 4th great grandmother and many of the early relatives. As an ardant geneologist when I was born, she sent a charyt for my father to fill out. He didn't but I have all of her many missels she sent. She and an Uncle took 14 years to document with the help of professionals the hisory of my father's family which were a titled family. In 1936 they published a few copies of the books for family members. I got one through a fluke after my father's death. So the 27 generations are intact as I had them translated by a German translator who married a GI and came to the USA. However the history of what happened after the bombing of the house and factory and the death of all my male first cousins in WWII has left a void. These few letters mean a lot to me. What a legacy my Grandmother left me. Wish I had gotten to meet her but her Letters I still have laboriously written in English with a German English dictionary. Too bad this didn't tie to the Geigers, which are my husband's mother's lineage. 1. [GEIGER-L] Geigers in Western Maryland
    2. I just received the following from another researcher. Does anyone have any further information on these Geigers. It would appear from this will of Susanna Geiger that she was married to someone with the surname Harry prior to her marriage to a Geiger and that she had children from both marriages. Note also that these Geigers were slave owners which is somewhat unusual for the Germans. Joan Washington Co. Md. Wills, Liber B., page 244-245. Susanna GEIGER of Hagerstown.
