Can't help you with the genealogy of this group, even though we have New York State Geigers on our tree. They do not connect with these in any way I can see. Our Geigers, however, were with a group of families from Alsace-Lorraine and settled in southern Erie County--supposedly because the hilly terrain reminded them of home in the "old country." Unless I'm mistaken, that other section of NYS is also hilly terrain. Maybe it had the same attraction. Georgianne
Recently found a wonderful tree on my husband's family and the submitter ACTUALLY answered my letter. The ancestor was born in Meekleburg, Germany in 1738 and settled in the Mohawk River area in New York State. He married a woman (very German name) born in Schoharie, New York. At least one of their chilren was born in Stone Arabia. The interesting part is that the family were active United Empire Loyalists whose lands were confiscated. They relocated to Canada. (Clue to why the Geigers left?) Maggie
I found the following marriages at page http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/marr00-11.html One is my family, can anyone tell me who the others belong to? One clarification--I have no knowledge that the Geigers settled there--only the allied Spiess family. I doubt that they were UEL or they too would have most likely ended up in Canada and not North Carolina. It does show German settlement in Stone Arabia though. Somehow I never thought of New York--other than the early Schoharie settlement as being a hotbed of German settlement. Thanks for the information. Joan

So I think is is safe to assume that Kitty may be a sister to Catharine Winegardner who married David. > > GYGAR, David//WINEGARDNER, Catharine; 20 Oct 1808; John Shiplor; PAB-3 > (These are my ancestors, Ken spelled Geiger) > > KIGER, Wm//WALDIKE, Jene; 16 Sep 1810; John Wright; PAB-20, CPF > > KIGER, WM//WALDRECK, Teney; license 14 Sep 1810; PAB-11, [WALDIKE, 10 > Sep 1810] > CPF I find the spellings you found here interesting for the given name "Jene" and "Teney." Joan, Thanks for the note. Couldn't remember the Alberry name to go with and identify the Franklin County, Ohio group. >From a book that was privately published I came across a George E. Poole who married Addie J. Geiger January 1890. They had 2 sons, Chester R. and George. Chester married Rebekah Ruth Prunty February 14, 1916 and lived with her and their three children, James(b. April 4, 1918) Virginia(b.Nov 15, 1919 and Barbara(b. August 9, 1921) on a ranch near Santa Rosa, California for a number of years. Having lived most of my life in the Santa Rosa, SOnoma Co. area and Marin Co., CA., I found this most interesting. This especially as there is a Rule/Ruyle? ranch of long standing in the Russian Gulch area of Sonoma Co. These Rules were not of our late Rule lineage but tie in farther back. Our Rules are where we tie to our Geiger families in IL. Just a bit of history. The above from a small book"Diary of John and Sarah Ann Pool-Trip to California from Highland Utah-1884."Early Highland Settlers and also their genealogy. This was done by a college student as a thesis at BYU. David?
I was discussing research yesterday with Désirée De Nantes a member of this list and she gave me some information I had not seen before regarding her ancestor Johhn Spiess/Speas. To fill you all in on the background. John Speas is believed to have married Mary Elizabeth Geiger/Kiger who was born (based on fairly widely accepted family information) about 1765, and who is (again based on family information) the daughter of John Adam Geiger and his wife Maria Margaretha Fiedler. This is the John Adam Geiger who settled by 1770 in Stokes County (Rural Hall), North Carolina. The one piece of evidence that I have to connect John Speas to the Geigers is the fact that he is named executor of the will of John Adam Geiger and is referred to as his "friend" which could well mean he is his son-in-law (I sure wish he had just said so and made things easier for us all). Anyway, we have always assumed that Adam Geiger met and married Maria Margaretha Fiedler in Berks County, PA as this is where she was born and raised. It is my belief that I found this John Adam Geiger and wife in 1767 in the records of Blue Mountain Church in Berks County which is within a mile or so of the church where Maria Margaretha Fiedler was bapt. in 1747. I believe it is likely that Adam and Maria Margaretha were married at this church and had Mary Elizabeth baptized there also--BUT we can't prove that since the records of this church have been destroyed or lost prior to 1767. I can't account for Adam and his family's whereabouts between 1767 and early in 1770 when they show up in Stokes County, NC. The information Désirée has given me on the family of John Speas (good friends to the Geigers) indicate that they had left Lancaster and Berks County, PA in the mid 1760s and moved to (of all places) Montgomery County, NY to a place called Stone Arabia. Probably the only thing that made it possible for them to be located in the records there and positively identified is the very unusual given name of John Spies' father--Hieronymous! I wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to what possible reason a Pennsylvania Duthchman might have had for picking up his family and moving to Stone Arabia, NY, and then picking up and moving once again to NC. Montgomery County, NY is just north of Schoharie County, NY, the site of the disastrous early settlement of Germans in America. Could there be some connection? It should also be noted that Gottfried Fiedler, grandfather of Maria Margaretha Fiedler, was one of the survivors of that early early (1710) Schoharie Settlement in NY. Might the Geigers have gone to Stone Arabia also? What was the draw for the Germans to NY and how many went? Here are the facts on the Speas family from Désirée: John SPEAS/SPEACE (spellings vary) was born 14 May 1762 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and christened at the First Reformed Church on 19 September 1762 in that same town. He died 3 February 1841 in Rural Hall, Stokes County, North Carolina, and is interred in the Nazareth Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rural Hall in what is now Forsyth County. He married Mary Elizabeth GEIGER (spellings vary, too) about 1787. His parents were Hieronimus ("Jerome" in English) SPIESS who was born in what is now Germany on 14 May 1732. He married an Anna Barbara_______about 1759. He migrated to the large German area of Pennsylvania aboard the ship "Halifax" on 22 September 1752. He died on 3 February 1841, probably in Stokes County, North Carolina. Their children were: a. Anna Katherine SPIESS, born 8 December 1760 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, christened at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran on 2 February 1761. She died 13 September 1814 in Stokes County, buried in the Shiloh Lutheran Cemetery in what is now Forsyth County. She married Johann Joseph MÜLLER on 30 May 1780 in Bethania, Stokes County; b. John SPIESS (SPEACE), noted above; c. Maria SPIES, born in July, 1767 in Stone Arabia, Montgomery County, New York, and christened 11 August 1767 at the Reformed Dutch Church in Stone Arabia. Sometime after this christening they moved to what is now Stokes and Forsyth counties, the date unknown." Anyone have any ideas? Joan

They also kind of get lost quickly! Nedra, don't know if they got lost quickly or not but we do have some Henckel- related Geigers in Franklin County: We have Joseph Geiger, Sr. (Anthony, Jacob, Valentine, Valentine, Valentine) born in 1789 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, now WV, who settled in Franklin County, Ohio. He married first Elizabeth Albery and second Mary Albery. There were 2 children from the first marriage: Harvey Geiger Anthony Geiger (who moved to Jay Co., IN) >From the second marriage we have: William Geiger (moved to Licking Co., Ohio) Noah Geiger Peter Geiger Thomsa J. Geiger Richard Milton Geiger Nancy Geiger Elger Geiger Joseph Geiger, Jr. So Nedra--yes--we have Geigers associated with the Henckel family who did settle not far away from Clinton County, Ohio, but I still can't account for Samuel and Benjamin within this family that I am aware of--I would NOT rule out the possibility or probability that they DO connect to these Geigers though. Recent trip to Warren & Clinton Counties, Ohio, resulted in the following being gleaned about a Samuel KYGER who had owned 280 acres ofland in Clinton Co, INDIANA in the 1840's. This same Samuel returned to Ohio and bought, from Edward G. Potts and Abigail his wife, 73.25 acres in Section 1 of Clear Creek Twp, Warren County, Ohio, on 26 June 1847. This Samuel KYGER died in Warren Co, OH 2 Dec 1848. Administrators of the estate were Peter KYGER and Jacob Tresslar. Surviving widow was Eve KYGER. Heirs: Sons, Peter, James, Ira, Henry C., Mordecai and daughters Easter & Sabina. All but Peter were minors. In the settlement of the estate, we see that land was held in Clinton Co, IN until at least mid-1852 as follows, all in township 22, Clinton Co, IN: SE 1/4 Sec. 26, Range 2 West, 160 acres; E SW 1/4 Sec 26, Range 2 West, 80 acres; NW SW 1/4 Sec. 10, township 22, Range 1 West, 40 acres. Additionally, land which he bought in Warren Co, Ohio, in 1847 was still held in Warren Co, OH, the "E 1/2" Sec. 1, Town 2, Range 5, 76.25 acres. Frederick OLDFATHER was appointed legal guardians of Samuel's minor children. Margaret OLDFATHER provided care for Samuel during his 41-day illness. Samuel was also a merchant of some sort; Tresslar the administrator made 3 trips to Indiana to the A. C. & C. PENCE Co. to settle an account. PENCE's are found to have intermarried with KYGER's, I understand. He also journeyed to Cincinnati to "settle, adjust and receive a claim on Evans & Swift". Finally, in the 1840 Clinton Co, Chester Twp, OH census is a Samuel KIGER (page 321) as follows: MALES: 1-0-1-1-0-0-1; FEMALES: 0-1-1-1-2-0-0. That would make Samuel 40-50 years old, or born between 1800-1810. Is it probable that Samuel in the 1840 OHIO census is the same Samuel who owned land in Indiana and who returned to Ohio, to die a year and a half after he returned? Does any of this ring any bells for anyone? What happened to the Indiana land? I plan to pursue the land transactions when I can get up to Clinton County, IN, later this year. Thanks Dick for the land info. I find in my notes: 14 Dec 1812 Twp 12Nrange 13E NE1/4 Sec 31 160 acres Cincinnati Land District 1 sold to Wm. Eadd 15 Oct 1823 (My note to myself: This may be Franklin Co., Metamora Twp. near town of Metamora.) I don't have source at hand, but will attempt to find it. (My research techniques are often hampered by time restrictions like, "The library (court house, Archivist's office, etc) has already closed. You MUST leave." I hate choosing between getting info without source or not getting info at all.
I, Dick Andis, b. in Hancock Co, IN, am great grandson of Permelia KIGER, dau. of John KIGER, Jr & Sarah GUINNUP. John Jr is son of John KYGER, Sr and Sarah PARRISH. John KYGER, Sr. purchased 160 acres of land on 14 Dec 1812 according to the following Land entry in "Indiana Land Entries" Vol. 1, Cincinnati District, 1801-1840 by Margaret R. Waters, page 91; located in the NE 1/4-Section 31, Franklin Co, IN. **This capsulized description courtesy of Vonda Cooper, Fremont, CA.** He later purchased 160 acres in Rush Co (80 acres, E 1/2 of NE 1/4 Sec 32, Twp 13, Rg. 11; and 80 acres, W 1/2 of NW 1/4 Sec 33, Twp 13, Range 11). We have good records of the disposition of the 160 acres in Rush County. But I find no records of the sale of the original 1812 purchase. Does anyone have that information? Dick Andis
I am looking for information on Benjamin Geiger, son of Valentine Geiger. Benjamin Geiger, Sr. was born 9 March 1748 and bapt. at New Hanover Lutheran Church in Phila. Co. (now Montgomery Co.) PA. He was the 10th of Valentine Geiger's 11 children. He married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) before 1772 and had 2 sons named Carl/Charles (1772) and Benjamin, Jr. (1777). Benjamin, Sr. is NOT anywhere in Pennsylvania in 1790 or 1800 on the census. His sons Charles and Benjamin, Jr. were born in Rockland Twp. Berks Co., and bapt. at Mertz Church in Rockland Twp., and at New Hanover Lutheran respectively. My guess is that Benjamin. Sr. died before the 1790 census. There is an Elizabeth Geiger living in Windsor Twp., Berks County, on page 44 on the 1790 PA census. Could she be the widow of Benjamin Geiger, Sr.? I think so--although this is some distance from Rockland Twp. where they had been living. We do know Benjamin's wife was Elizabeth and I can't otherwise account for this Elizabeth. I think I need to look at that census record to determine the family makeup and ages. Benjamin, Jr. had obviously married before 1798. He and his wife Catharine had a son Johannes bapt. in North Annville, now in Lebanon Co. at Quitopahilla Church in 1798--so they had already left Berks by that time. Now for 1800: I am aware of all of the Geigers listed on that census--and there is NO Benjamin and no Geiger family which I think could include him. He is also not in Maryland--which could be a step toward Westmoreland County where we know he eventually ended up. In 1810 the only Benjamin with any possible variation of this surname is a Benjamin Geyer living in Philadelphia. Not a likely suspect to be this Benjamin. Finally in 1820 Benjamin Gigar appears on the scene in Westmoreland County, Unity Township on page 176. A Benjamin Keiger appears in Westmoreland Co., Salem Twp., in 1830 on page 256. In 1840 he is gone again from the census in Westmoreland. The big question is--even if this Benjamin is with his mother in 1790 and in Westmoreland in 1820 and 1830--where is he in 1800 and 1810? I have records showing a family register listing 4 children of Benjamin and Catharine from the records of Rev. J.M. Steck of the First Lutheran Church, Westmoreland County, Greensburg, PA (but I don't know the date this information was entered in the church records or WHERE these children were born and bapt.) as follows: Benjamin born 1806 Henry born 1808 Maria Catherine born 1811--(born Youngstown, PA according to the Geiger webpage of Peggy Loos) Solomon born 1818 Peggy Loos' Geiger Webpage also lists for this couple: a child born about 1801 (could refer to Johannes born in 1798 in North Annville (now in Lebanon County). Jonas Benjamin born 1815 I don't know the sources for the last two children. Any help on any of the above would be greatly appreciated. Joan

So when you suddenly start getting messages from YOURLIST-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com, quoting some ungodly HTML mess that you never saw before, don't be alarmed. :-) It just means the list server is rejecting a MIME message that was sent to your list, and that you may get a response from the poster. This change is not currently something the listowner can turn on and off. Attachments will be blocked from every list alike. This might not be to the taste of some listowners, so we'll consider closely whether it would be safe to make it an optional setting. Thanks to Marc Nozell for finding the SmartList patch that was used as the basis for this fix! I understand that there may be some Kyger researchers who also have information regarding the Pirkey or Armentrout families in Virginia. Specifically, I am interested in the ancestry of 1)George PIRKEY who married Anna Elizabeth KYGER. I believe but do not know that his parents were Henry Pirkey/Purkey and Ann Margaret CONRAD who married in 1783, Rockingham Co., VA. 2) Johann Frederick ARMENTROUT who married Catherine HEADRICK. Marriage probably before 1765. I would appreciate any help with this. AEG Amy E. Garber aegarber@cvinet.com Tel: (757) 595-6981
