    1. [GEIGER-L] Re: GEIGER-D Digest V98 #23
    2. Joan, I have no idea if Leota has special meaning. Leota Havens lived in Elwood, IN in 1st half of this century. I am totally stuck on the father of Elijah Havens who was born 1806 in Fleming Co., KY. When the Clymers came to this country (early 1700's) they lived in Maryland. They stayed there for some time them on to Ohio and after Civil War to Elwood, IN. The Havens family to which Leota (and my grandfather) belongs had some strange names. My grandfather's middle name was "Frame" I have looked for a relative, neighbor, anything with Frame as a surname, but can find none. I did find a doctor of that name, but I think he died before my grandfather was born. (At least there was some reason I decided he wasn't the person for whom my grandfather was named.) Maybe it is because I heard my mother refer to Aunt Ottie that it never seemed to me. BUT, your instincts are clearly better than mine, and I shall keep a eye out for Leota as either a first or last name.

    2. Dorothy, at the moment I can't specifically place Catherine Ziegler or the Foutz but I descend from Zieglers in York County, PA, and I think Catherine is most likely a part of that family. I "daughter out" of the Zieglers at an earlier date than Catherine appears on the scene and I don't have much on the family by that time. In any event the family descends from Georg Philip Ziegler born 1677 in Sinsheim, Germany who died in York County, PA about 1756. He emigrated with his family on the William and Sarah in 1727--which interestingly is the same ship (and date) that my ancestor Ulrich Leib arrived on. Ulrich Leib's son Peter married Ursula Elizabeth Geiger, daughter of Christian Geiger--and now the Zieglers are most likely involved with the Oldfather/Altvaters who also marry into this line at a later date. The Foutz line if interesting in that Andreas Huber married a Foutz--and he is the brother of Johannes Huber who was Christian Geiger's next door neighbor who purchased Christian's farm from George Geiger in 1783. You can never know too much about allied families. Joan

    3. Hi Cousin Richard You've hit on Joan's line, and my own, right on down through the Robinsons. Only I come off of their son Elwood Edward Kiger b. 3 Aug 1845 and m. Emily Apple Bechtel 27 Aug 1868. I have the other siblings of Elwood's as Margaret, Caroline and David, in fact have a portrait of those three hanging in my livingroom, but somehow do not have your Anna Rebecca in my stuff. Elwood's dau Kate was my ggrandmother and the family historian. I get the Kiger's twice because of a Jaquet marriage too. I know we have corresponded before, so forgive me if I didn't realize how the connection was made, or that your Anna was "lost" from my family group. I must have buried you in my hard files - which take up half a filing cabinet due to Joan's constant sleuthing, but is majorly in need of an overhaul. You should have coughed up the cost of the subscription though, Richard. Joan had made some remarkable discoveries in the last year, that take our guys back a couple of generations in the Old World. I will let her fill you in, for she fully deserves the credit. I just tag along at her heels here and offer moral support and wise acre remarks from time to time. Welcome home! Val P.S. - our weather was lousy too until a cool front came through last night, feels downright chilly out there right now. :) ---------- > From: Richard B. 3. Hello, all, from hot & steamy southern Virginia [over 95 deg. 2 of last 3 days], I'm a new subscriber to Geiger-L, although I received The Kiger Konnection for several years up until it was necessary to pay for a subscription [I may still do that, if it's available]. Unlike most of the messages I've read on this list so far [in the last 36 hours or so], I have KIGER/GEIGER/KEYGAR spellings in my family tree [one of the few branches I know much about on my mother's side]. My apparent line of descent is as follows [possibly incomplete or containing errors since I'm copying from an old pedigree work sheet]: 1... Mathias KEYGAR [no dates/places on work sheet] m. Anna Mary UNKNOWN [no dates/places on work sheet], and had son, 2... John Henry GEIGER [b. 1744, d. 12 Oct. 1806, no places listed on work sheet] m. With that in mind, I would love to hear from any KIGER/GEIGER descendants from that same line, especially if they can help me fill in gaps about the LINDMEYER, ROBINSON, BEATH, and DILG families [allied families to this KIGER/GEIGER line]. I have a limited amount of information already about brothers/sisters to my direct line, but little else about these families [at least without going into my computer database and/or my paper files -- which need major reorganizing at the moment 8-(]. 1. [GEIGER-L] Kiger from Rockingham Co. VA
    2. I am looking for information on Elizabeth Kiger who married Isaac Hunter in Rockingham Co., Va. in Oct. 1812. At the time of her marriage, her legal guardian was Benjamin Kiger. Her father was Anthony Kiger (dscd). After her marriage she and Isaac moved to Ohio and stayed for several years, long enough to have a daughter, Matilda who was born somewhere in OH. Isaac and Elizabeth may have been accompanied to OH by her uncle Jacob Kiger. Isaac and Elizabeth eventually ended up in the Wabash River valley in Vigo Co. , IN. Elizabeth died in what they called the "fort" where the early settlers had to go when the Indian attacks became too severe. Her death was ca. 1815-1818. Isaac Hunter died in 1819 in a drowning accident on the Wabash River. The administrator of his estate was Jacob Kiger who subsequently raised Matilda HUnter. Does anyone have any idea where the Hunters may have lived in Ohio? I would like to find Isaac Hunter on the tax list of some county in Ohio. He lived in OH after 1812 until ca. 1817. I have not been able to find where Isaac and Elizabeth lived before they moved to IN. 3. Joan: I asked my Henthorn source about the connection between Kiger/Parrish/ Henthorn. He says he can't find any connection. He has an extensive Henthorn list, published and sent to Utah. He is an authority, if there is one, on the Henthorn family. He has worked with several people to put forth a very comprehensive Henthorn family history. Last time we 'talked' via e-mail, he said the report was over 700 pages (one side). Kay

Matthias Geiger's wife's maiden name was Anna Mary Halter. They were both born about 1701-1703 possibly in Lembach, Alsace, France which is where they were married in January 1728 at the Catholic Church in Lembach. Matthias's parents were Henricus Geiger and his wife Johanna Hagler(in). Henricus was a citizen in Lembach and his profession was Conditori (some sort of leader, founder, or conductor of something). Anna Mary Halter was the daughter of Simon Halter "vitriaria" in Mattstall--glassblower at the Mattstall glass factory near Lembach. Johanna Haglerin Geiger died in Lembach on 10 July 1737 and Henricus Geiger died in Lembach in 1746. Matthias Geiger's Salem County, NJ will was written 28 Aug. 1759 and proved 27 Sept. 1759. > 2... Kay, might that be Dick Henthorn? If so I have chatted with him some time ago. Ask him about Matilda Collins Henthorne who married Abraham Kyger and lived in Stuart, Kansas. Abraham was in Howard County, Indiana in 1860. He died in 1886--based on the 1860 census he was born about 1812 and Matilda was born about 1817. He is a son of John Kyger/Kiger and Sarah Parrish. I also forgot that there is a Teagarden connection between the OTHER Daniel Kyger and John Kyger and Sarah Parrish lines. What a tangled web we weave. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] Geiger - Wurttemberg, Germany
    2. I am looking for anyone who may have info on "my" Geigers, who come from the Wurttemberg area of Germany: Johannes Geiger, married Dorothea Kolben, daughter of Georg Kolben and his wife, Elizabeth (I do not know where / when they were born, but it was in the 1600s, Johannes died in Lachmeiler, Germany, I do not know where Dorothea died). They had eleven children. Johann Philippes Geiger (born 17 Jul 1653, Lachweiler, Germany and died 2 Apr 1747 in Dennhof, Germany), married Anna Maria Wagner (born 1656, in Nisslinshof, Germany and died 15 Jul 1730 in Lachweiler, Germany) on 20 Dec 1683 in Mainhardt, Germany. They had nine children: Maria Chatarina, Johann Friedrich, Johann Philipp, Maria Barbara, Johann Ludwig I, Johann Ludwig II, Maria Euphrosina, Anna Regina, Anna Sabina. Johann Friedrich Geiger (born 28 Feb 1686, I do not know where), married Agatha Barbara Hoheloh (born 1694, I do not know where, and died in 1763, I do not know where). It is said that Agatha Barbara was a Baroness. They had thirteen children, but I only know the name of Johann Friedrich. Johann Friedrich Geiger (born 1721, I do not know where and died 1776 in Rinnen (?)), was married three times: first to Anna Eva Dierolf (they had five children), second to Eva Gräther (they had no children), and his third wife: Maria Juliana Gräther (born 1742, I do not know when or where she died). They had six children, but I only know the name of Johann Wilhelm. Johann Wilhelm Geiger (born 30 August 1776 in Rinnen, and died 16 September 1834 in Wildgarten) married Christina Katharina Müller (born 7 March 1794 in Honkling, daughter of Johannes Müller and Christine (Zeiher) Müller and died 3 March 1844 in Wildgarten) on 25 Jan 1815 in Fichtenberg. They had four children: a child whose name is unknown, David, Barbara, and Katharina. David Geiger (born 9 Jan 1816 in Wildgarten and died 1 Jan 1864 in Wildgarten) married Rosine Heinz (born 11 October 1820 in Waldhaus, daughter of Johann Georg Heinz and Anna Maria (Bauer) Heinz and died 15 Jan 1897 in Schirhof) on 28 Jan 1840 in Vichberg (old name for Fichtenberg). They had nine children: Gottlieb, Christian, David, Karl, Wilhelm, Sibylla, Johann Georg, Friedrich, and a child whose name is unknown. Johnn Georg Geiger (born on 6 July 1858 in Wildgarten and died 16 April 1916 in Fichtenberg) married Maria Karoline Klink (born on 31 October 1855 in Tiefenmad, daughter of Gottlieb Klink and Eva (Wahl) Klink and died on 7 May 1942 in Fichtenberg) on 30 March 1886 in Kirchenkirnberg. They had three sons: Karl Gottlieb, Friedrich Wilhelm, and Adolph. Friedrich Wilhelm Geiger came to the United States alone sometime in the second half of 1910; I have two dates: one in September, and the other in November. Friedrich Wilhelm (born 2 Jan 1887 in Gaildorf, Germany and died 13 June 1961 in Hicksville, NY, USA) married Margarethe Louise Maria Meier (born 16 July 1896 in Oker, Germany, daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm August Meier and Anna Berta Ida (Schacht) Meier and died 7 September 1985 in Mineola, NY, USA) on 10 February 1917 in the Bronx, NY, USA. They had five children: Friedrich George August, Otto Wilhelm, twin daughters: Bertha Marie and Hedwig Elizabeth, and Dorothy. Friedrich George August Geiger (born 10 May 1918 in the Bronx, NY, and died 25 August 1981 in Mineola, NY) married Helen Erna Krupp (born 14 September 1924 in the Bronx, NY, daughter of John Gerald Krupp and Edna (Gross) Krupp) on 23 April 1949 in the Bronx, NY. They had two children: John Frederick, and Ruth Ann. Do I have any "cousins" out there?

If so do you think it is native to this part of the country for some reason? Were your Havens/Clymers from the western PA and WV area? Also, what time period did the name first appear? 3. Joan: I thought we had discussed the fact that Daniel & Anna's daughter, Brooky was married to Thomas Scott Morgan, son of Achilles Morgan, of Morgantown, WV. I have been in touch with several of his descendants and have gather quite a lot of information. Daniel and Anna married in Monongalia and I believe a couple of their children were born there. they were in Monroe Co. just after the turn of the century...1800. The rest of their children were born there. Daniel didn't take his family west to Vermilion Co. until after 1832. I don't have a John Kiger/Kyger who married Sarah Parrish that I know of right now. If they belong to my side of the Kyger family, then I'm not sure where he fits in. Its hard to believe that there is no family history written by any member of the family that we can find. I'm still sending out queries for more members of the family. I have a representative for most of the 13 children born to Daniel and Anna. At last count, I think I have over 3100 just of my Daniel. Daniel didn't marry until he reached the age of 34. That had made it difficult to trace his wherabouts. Our family genealogist seems to agree with me that he was a surveyor. We are still checking that lead to see if he was the one mentioned several times. He certainly lived in the areas mentioned as having been surveyed by a Daniel Kyger/Kiger. Regarding the name Leota...maybe its a name that was passed down through the Kyger family. I just don't know. I'll have to check into it and see if anyone knows anything about it. Sorry I don't have anything more to offer on the subject. These families are all alied with each other--even though we have not figured out just how at this point. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] New Information on the Christian Geiger line
    2. Quite some time ago I speculated about the origin of the Geigers who appear in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. There is a Geiger Cemetery there. Among those buried in this Geiger Cemetery are: William Geiger "born 1778; died October 23, 1850; 72 years old" Geiger, Grace, wife of William, daughter of William Tolland; died June 13, 1833; 53 years, 8 months, and 26 days. Adam Geiger, so of William and Grace; died December 3, 1833; 18 years, 3 months, and 18 days. Christian Geiger, born 13 September 1783; died 19 June 1842; aged 58 years, 9 months, 6 days. Catherine Geiger, nee Snyder, wife of Christian; died 16 August 1846; aged 54 years, 7 months, 13 days. Geiger, Sarah, daughter; born 26 January 1831; died 4 September 1849; aged 18 years, 8 months, 9 days. Unger, Catherine, daughter of Christian and Catherine Geiger; wife of David B.; married 15 March 1811 (note: this is not correct--it iw actually Catherine's birh date); died 27 December 1885; aged 74 years, 9 months, 12 days. Unger, David, son of John and Maria; born 19 September 1804; died 27 August 1840; aged 35 years, 11 months, 8 days. Unger, Caroline, daughter; born 3 March 1833; died 28 March 1848; aged 15 yers, 0 months, 25 days. Unger, John C., son of Christian and Phenie; born 3 December 1860; died 17 January 1861. Geiger, Mary Ann "Unger," wife of Wiliam Geiger; died 5 March 1848 (born January 2, 1825). Geiger, Izadora, daughter of William and Mary Ann Geiger (Mary Ann, nee Unger); died 27 February 1848; aged 0 years, 4 months, and 20 days. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was my belief that William Geiger buried there is the Wilhelm Geiger born 1 November 1779 and bapt. 26 Dec. 1779 at Manheim Lutheran Church in Lancaster County, PA who is the son of Wilhelm and Maria Catharina Geiger. The SPONSORS at Wilhelm's baptism were: GEORGE GEIGER and his wife BARBARA KLINE. My theory is that this Wilhelm, Sr. above--could be the son of Wilhelm born about 1720 and the grandson of Christian Geiger, the immigrant. Further evidence to tie the Dauphin County Geigers to the Christian Geiger family is the fact that Anna Maria Geiger daughter of Christian, the immigrant, married George Unger. It is my belief that the Ungers are also from the same family living in Dauphin County and associated with these Geigers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I now have received the following biography from Dauphin County Biographical Encyclopedia. >From the biography of Henry E. Wilvert, page 868-869: "Wilvert, Henry E., farmer, was born in Powell's Valley, Halifax Township, Dauphin County, PA., November 6, 1862. He is the son of Henry M. and Susan (Steel) Wilvert. His grandfather, John Wilvert, was a contractor in stone work. He built the stone piers of the old Dauphin bridge across the Susquehanna River; he also built those of the bridge over the Susquehanna at Clark's Ferry. On this latter job he sustained considerable financial loss. He was a man whose word was as good as a bond. He completed his contract at the expense of his estate, which was the result of hte labors of a lifetime. His son, Henry M. Wilvert, Sr. was a stonemason. He died Dec. 27, 1876, aged about 48. His wife died July 3, 1894. Their children were: William J., Daniel Theordore, John Albert, and Henry M. Henry M. Wilvert, Jr., went to the public schools at Matamoras, Halifax township, during the winter, until he was 18 years old, and worked on the farm in summer, He was employed at various kinds of work until he became of age. He then took up farming on his own account, on the old Geiger homestead, Middle Paxton Township. He purchased the homestead in the autumn of 1883, and has occupied it since that time as his home. Mr. Wilvert was married, Dec. 23, 1883, to Isimiah M., daughter of William and Eleanor (Felty) Geiger. They have no children. Mr Wilvert is a Republican. The family attend the Methodist Episcopal Church. Christian Geiger, grandfather of Mrs. Wilvert, came from Lancaster County and settled in Middle Paxton Township. Her father, William Geiger, was born in that township, near the old homestead, which he bought after his mother's death. He was born Sept. 29, 1815, and died March 20, 1888. HIs wife was born Jan. 27, 1828, and died July 7, 1867. They had seven children: Daniel W.., died in infancy; Johan Christian, born May 27, 1852; July 27, 1852; Mary Alice, November 3, 1853, wife of Michael Crisswell; Caroline E., July 3rd, 1855, wife of George W. Reed; Solomon F., August 22 August, 1857; Isimiah M. Mrs. Wilvert, December 15, 1859 and William C. March 15, 1859." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So I think the above bio supports that fact that these Geigers in Dauphin County are Christian Geiger descendants. I think Christian and William buried in the Geiger Cemetery in Dauphin County are brothers and are the children of Wilhelm and Maria Catharina. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] VIRD KYGER (a.k.a. ? Ulysses V.)
    2. Dick Andis
    3. Joan so aptly poses a blunt question: <grin> > While my guess is wife number two dies and Vird remarries Mary L. born > March 2, 1865 and then he dies and she marries John W. Ayers as a widow. The > fact that Mary L. Kyger born 1865 is marrying in 1907 indicates to me she most > likely is not a Kyger by birbut Vird's widow. This is STRICTLY guesswork. > This entry could well be an entirely different Kyger family so PLEASE don't > quote me on this one. I just have a "feeling" that this is how it will all > play out when we learn more. Maybe we can put Dick Andis to work gathering > evidence on this one. How about it Dick? I DO plan to get to White County, IN, (Monon) in near future as Dorothy and I have discussed on a couple of occasions. Will look for probate on Vird and/or Margaret as well as guardianship court records, land records in Monon Twp, obits, etc. Will try to tie that to trip to Clinton Co, IN to check on the land left there by Samuel KYGER who went back to Ohio FROM Indiana in 1847, passing away on 2 Dec 1848 in Warren Co, OH. In short....the answer is "YEP". Dick Andis <randis@madison.tdsnet.com>

    1. FW: [GEIGER-L] GEIGER/GEYER in Schuylkill County, PA
    2. Nancy J. Freehafer
    3. Joan, Thanks for the follow-up and information. Do you (or anyone) know who the head of household of the Alsace Twp. branch was? Would that be John Geiger/Geyer? I've been looking through some of the Trinity Church records, but the ones I ordered are a little later than I need for the Geier's I'm looking for. I just ordered an earlier volume though; so I should have that in a couple of weeks. Nancy ---------- From: JYoung6180@aol.com[SMTP:JYoung6180@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, June 27, 1998 12:20 AM To: GEIGER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEIGER-L] GEIGER/GEYER in Schuylkill County, PA A few days ago I stated that I thought that Sarah Geyer/Geiger born in Orwigsburg might be the daughter of John Geiger/Geyer of Alsace Township, Berks County. This John, I speculated might well be the son of either Christopher or Johannes who were brothers and sons of Adam Geiger/Geyer. I said I would write to Barbara Campbell about this since she didn't have e- mail and I thought she might know more. This is her response. "I do not have anything on either John Geiger-son of Christopher or son of Johannes. It does sound as though Sarah is related to the Alsace Twp. branch. Several of the Wunder-related families ended up in Orwigsburg and surrounding area. Stroheckers, Harveys, Aulonback, etc. Records for the time period Sarah was born are particularly poor in Schuylkill County. I think Rev. Boos was travelling up to Schuylkill during this time. Schuylkill County formed from Berks 1812-1815, if memory serves me. People seem to still show up in Trinity and First Reformed in Reading as if they had never gone anywhere." Joan

    3. Hi, Joan: I was going to answer your other post, but will do it here. Verda and James had a child born in 1933, so I guess we could "guesstimate" that they were married around 1932/33. I don't know where the name Leota came from right now, but I'll make inquiries and let you know. You can see that it was passed on in the family. It must have come down through Susan Belle Rodgers' family. I've not seen it in the Kyger line. They stayed fairly much passing on their own family lines...sister, brother, etc. It was a nice thing for them to do, except for those of us who are trying to separate them into family groups. What a headache. There may be some connections between the families you mentioned. Getting past all the DAniel Kygers is a real problem. That's why we have to pay particular attention to the dates of birth. I had some good theories at one time, but couldn't prove anything. However, there are still books in some libraries I haven't gone through. I do know for a fact that DAniel was born in 1762 and died in 1849. So, those are the dates I have to work with in order to get the right family. I wish I had more on Daniel, but it is not to be yet. I can't believe there were so many Daniel Kyger's born during that time period. If we continue to search, I'm sure that one day the mystery will be shown to us. In the meantime, I guess we just 'keep searching!' I didn't send the information about Verda Kyger to you because at the time we were looking for Daniel Kyger's parents. Verda came along in 1912. Isn't it great to be able to be in contact much quicker by e-mail instead of waiting days and days and days for a reply?! Good luck, everyone! Nancy, Barbara is referring to Adam Geiger/Geyer (we really don't know which he was originally) as the head of household--perhaps a better term would be progenitor since he is the earliest in this family we can identify. Among his children were Christopher and Johannes. Both had sons John who would be about the right age to be the one living in Orwigsburg--and who could potentially be the father of your Sarah Geier. And Barbara doesn't know anything about either of them--so we must consider them to be possible fathers for Sarah. Especially since Barbara tells us others connected to this family did go to Orwigsburg. Joan
