    2. Stephen P. Lentz
    3. Ken, In checking the 1850 Census index on the Kosciusko Co. USGenWeb page, the following family shows up (the only Geiger family in the index): GEIGER Henry D. 32 M Farmer 1000 PA GEIGER Mary 26 F OH GEIGER John H. 6 M OH GEIGER Geo. W. 4 M IN GEIGER Alertis L. 2 M IN GEIGER Edward W. 2/12 M IN I think that this is likely the Henry and John Henry you have mentioned, however it would make Henry's year of birth 1818 rather than 1803. The states of birth are listed on the right-hand side. I do not have any connections to or ancestors of this family currently, though I have been hanging on to the info in the hopes that I will find a connection to my gg-grandmother Emily Geiger (1880-1966) in Kosciusko Co. - perhaps one of the sons is her father? Does anyone currently have info on the grandchildren of Henry? 3. The KAIGER, KAIZER, and KIER spellings were on my ancestor, Augustaus's, mar. bond dated 1786 - Augusta Co., Va.. He signed it "KIGER". The bond was held and firmly bound to Patrick Henry. It was "Sealed and delivered in the presence of: Samuel Merritt" and had To Col. Alex MClenaihan (looks like), Clerk of Augusta County. Test: Sam'l Merritt. He was mar. 2 January by Rev. Wm. Wilson (via Chalkley's Augusta Co. Records) to Cathrina SPRING. His children born between about 1788 to about 1804 were: Nicholas; John; Lewis, Sr.; Elizabeth; Margaret. These different children, during their lives, have lived in Augusta Co., Va.; Greenbrier Co., Webster Co., Braxton Co., Nicholas Co., W.Va.. Who were his parents and siblings???? Where did they live, where was he born and where did he die??? Does ANYONE have this man and wife in their records??? Can ANYONE help me on this "Brick Wall"????????????? I know, there's a lot of questions here but I've been at this brick wall for years. Thanks for any clues or help anyone might have. Helen

Steve, I have a couple suggestions--but you appear to have already thought this out well so you most likely have considered this. First, have you tried to obtain a death certificate for Emily? Have you tried finding her with her parents either on the 1880 (assuming she was born in time to be on there) or 1900 census (assuming she didn't marry by 1900)? One question--could you tell us who Emily married? Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] When is a Geiger not a Geiger?
    2. I received a very interesting e-mail a couple days ago from a lady named Sharon A. Craig. With her permission I am sharing her story and her family with you. She told me she was looking for a Henry Geiger, born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, who was married to a Mary and who died prior to 1856 in Hamilton County, Indiana. The children of Henry and Mary are: 1. Eve born 11 October 1793 in Berks County, PA, who married Philip Heimbach in Colombia County, PA. 2. Absolom born 10 April 1795 in Berks County, PA. 3. Henry who married Catherine Meyer on 14 October 1817 and whose name is sometimes shown as "Gigger." 4. Daniel born 8 March 1797 in Berks County, PA. 5. Joseph 6. Jacob born in 1807 in Colombia County, PA and who went with the family to Hamilton County, Indiana. 7. Solomon 8. Elias born 26 March 1818 who went to Hamilton County, Indiana. 9. Elizabeth who married John Drutz 10. Susannah--in Northampton County, PA 11. Mary married George Shane. Note: the birth order may not be exactly correct. Sharon wanted to know if I knew who her Henry Geiger from Berks County was--she is looking for his parents. Now this was a first for me--I found him but it sure wasn't easy. This is the first instance I have seen in which the name Geiger was NOT originally GEIGER. I found Johann Henrich and Johann Jacob Gücker who were apparently brothers and who arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship Lydia in 1743. I don't know where they were between 1743 and 1749 but in that year they both show up in Berks County records at Bern Church in Bern township, Berks County. The name is spelled alternately as Gücker, Guecker, and Gicker--but never Geiger. Now I am not just sure yet (am having Berks County wills checked but don't have the information yet) just who is whose son--or maybe grandson--and how the family all fits together, but there is more than one Henry here--most likely Jacob and Henrich both had sons named Henrich--or grandsons. One Henrich Guecker married Catharine Weber on 2 April 1782 in Rev. Waldschmidt's records. She is the daughter of Matthias Weber. The Weber/Weavers are closely allied with the "Geigers" of Hamilton County, Indiana later on. Quite possibly the same family. The second Henrich--Henrich Gicker married Maria Magdalena Höll of Bern Township on March 19, 1793. This is no doubt the Henry who moved to Indiana as the children of this couple baptized at Schwartzwald Church in Exeter Township, Berks County match up exactly. So we can't even state unequivicably that GEIGER is ALWAYS GEIGER. One thought I had is that these "GEIGERS" ended up in Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. Also in Hamilton County, in Delaware Township, at the same time (1840) is Emanuel Kiger. I don't think he is related to this family but I can't be sure at the moment. Any ideas? Joan

One additional question though--since Latin can be such a troublesome language--a maker of keys is a locksmith. And the word for locksmith is Claustrarius artifex. Perhaps it is only a different way of saying the same thing? Do you want me to tell him how to do the German characters in e-mail--I would be happy to if it would help. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] more on Geigers in Dauphin County---Christian Geiger line
    2. I checked the 1800 census for Dauphin County and found the following entries. William Ciger: 1 male under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male, 16-26, 1 male 26-45 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45 William Ciger: 2 males ages 16-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26 The above ages for the heads of the households would fit perfectly for what we know about Wilhelm Geiger born in 1779 in Lancaster County, son of Wilhelm Geiger. This date of birth would make him 21 years old on this census. I can't explain who the second male age 16-26 is in his household. So it looks as if both William Sr. and Jr. moved to Dauphin before 1800. Also the age of 26-45 would fit perfectly for William, Sr. to be Wilhelm Geiger (son of yet another Wilhelm and grandson of Christian Geiger) born in VA in 1756--which would have made him 44 years old on the census. William, Jr. would have been too young to appear on the 1790 census but for some reason I don't see William, Sr. anywhere in PA either in 1790. >From the number of children in William's household in 1800 it would appear we have many new Christian Geiger descendants to discover in Dauphin County. 3. Good afternoon, Geiger/Kyger/Kiger Rooters & Author, Joan Young: Received your 'most excellent' newsletter in today's mail. As usual, it is very informative. I read your article, "The Greene County Pennsylvania Kiger Family, Part I," with interest. Since I don't have any idea which part of PA my Kyger family lived, its difficult to pinpoint Daniel as having come from any particular area. I didn't recognize any of the people in your column. I do have 4 Charlie Kygers in my tree, but all are descendants of Daniel. This does lead to the fact that someone in the family liked the name Charles. It could have meaning, of what...I don't know. If it is possible, I'm going in to the Sanford library and order some books through interlibrary loan on Fayette and those counties in the southwest corner of PA. Right now, I'm not up to going into Orlando to do any research. Besides I don't want to be away from home right now. The fires here in FL are getting a little too close to me for comfort. Right now,it's burning just a few miles straight down the road from me.That few miles might as well be just around the corner. When the wind shifts, we get the smoke. I keep the central a/c on and the a/c in my bedroom. With my bronchial asthma, I don't want anything to trigger an attack. These fires bring to my attention as to what would I do if I had to leave all my research notebooks. My husband assures me that we will take them after the three of us get in the truck along with a few clothes and our antique dolls. I did send my Kyger and Smith family trees to a 'cousin' just in case something happened here. I plan to make her a disk of the rest of my research information. This has been discussed many times on several lists, but until you are faced with the fact that all could go up in fire, you might not be properly prepared to meet a crisis. We could use a few prayers down here...especially in Jacksonville and Volusia Counties. However, the smoke doesn't recognize county lines. Also, please say prayers for the wonderful firefighters who have fought a brave fight. Keep searching! Kay from Smokey Florida PS: We could use those prayers for rain...slow and easy for about three days. It could soak down into the earth and squelch those 'hot spots' that keep creeping back, causing more problems.

Kay, all of you near the fire area in Florida do, of course, have our prayers! It is something to think about to be faced with even a remote possibility of losing our research not to mention our homes and other possessions! Hopefully it will not happen to you or any of us. I think we will find some sort of connection between all of the Monongalia, Wetzel, and Greene County Kigers--no matter whether they spell the name with an i or a y. The fun will be in finding out just what the nature of that connection might be. I would welcome anything you might be able to find in your library. I would advise anyone else working on these Geigers/Kygers and Kigers in this area to familiarize themselves with Valentine Geiger of Ittlingen, Germany and his descendants. Joan

In any event it is not a very popular one--given name OR surname. So it could be argued that there might be some indication that it was being repeated among related family members--possibly a clue but not proof of anything. Joan

    2. Joan, you wrote: "Dorothy, by saying that--do you mean that you think Leota is just another given name and not indicating a prior surname? If so do you think it is native to this part of the country for some reason? Were your Havens/Clymers from the western PA and WV area? Also, what time period did the name first appear? Maybe that is the governing factor." Joan Joan, I have no idea if Leota has special meaning. Lena Leota Havens was born ca 1874 and died in 1947 in Elwood, IN. (Several in that family were known by their midle names.) I am totally stuck on the father of Elijah Havens who was born 1806 in Fleming Co., KY. When the Clymers came to this country (early 1700's) they lived in Maryland. They stayed there for some time then on to Ohio and in middle 1860's to Elwood, IN. The Havens family to which Leota (and my grandfather) belongs had some strange names. My grandfather's middle name was "Frame" I have looked for a relative, neighbor, anything with Frame as a surname, but can find none. I did find a doctor of that name, but I think he died before my grandfather was born. (At least there was some reason I decided he wasn't the person for whom my grandfather was named.) Maybe it is because I heard my mother refer to Aunt Ottie that it never seemed significant to me. BUT, your instincts are clearly better than mine, and I shall keep a eye out for Leota as either a first or last name. Dorothy
