Sorry to involve the entire list in this but I need the help of the 11 subscribers who receive the list mail in digest mode and who are also AOL subscribers. AOL limits the size of e-mail messages that it will allow to go through as an actual e-mail. If a message comes through larger than AOL will allow then the entire message is converted into a text file attachment which must be downloaded and viewed in a text editor or word processor. The reasons AOL chooses to do this are too involved to go into in this message but they are partly for the members' own protection. I have no say in the matter in what AOL will convert into text attachments or what they will accept as regular mail. The problem only occurrs with digests--it does not involve anyone receiving the list mail in single message mode--it also does not involve people who are not receiving the list mail through AOL. So if any list member is having problems with the digests and would like me to switch them over to single messae mode I would be happy to do that. Also, there are other options I could discuss with you to enable you to receive the digest with no problem by getting your list mail through a service other than AOL--at no cost to you. First I would like to find out exactly what is going on here. I need to determine what is happening with Delia's digests in order to know what to tell Rootsweb so that they can help me get it straightened out. Is anyone else having problems with the digest mail? Especially those on AOL? Delia I need to know exactly what is happening. Do you see the red warning message when you click on download? Or is it happening when you open the e- mail itself? If it is happening when you click on download it sounds to me as if for some reason the digest is coming through in some form OTHER than a text file--which would indicate to me that AOL is at fault here since they are creating the attachment in the first place. AOL will give you a warning message anytime you go to download a file that could contain a virus (which a text file cannot). I am not sure whether any of this could have caused the GPF you received while attempting to open the mail--that may have been unrelated. Should that happen again write down the details of the error message and let me know what it says. It may involve a call to AOL tech support to get this straightened out--it sounds like their fault and not Rootsweb--but first I would like to know if anyone else is affected by this? Thanks! Joan

    2. In today's edition of the Missing Links newsletter there was a very interesting article which included some information on the town of Stone Arabia, NY which I had asked about previously on the list. Apparently the town had a major German influence and at least some of its history involved Hessian soldiers. I quote below just a tiny portion of the information about Stone Arabia from the lengthy article. "Steinrabi, now called Stone Arabia, an old German community in the Mohawk valley of Montgomery County, New York State. If you look at today's maps you'll find Nelliston and Palatine Bridge instead. This German speaking village had several churches, one of them the Palatine Lutheran Trinity Church of Stone Arabia. They also must have had a German speaking or teaching school" Joan

First of all--it looks like a type for the DOB of Margaret "Peggy" dau. of John Adam Geiger. What is the correct date? I have a second marriage for John Adam to Sylvy Bobbitt/Babbitt on Mar 2, 1819. I also have another marriage for iv. Elizabeth Giger to Thomas Strickler 1810. I have a marriage for x. Daniel Kiger to Jane Could. Isaac Kiger--is he the Isaac Kiger who married Lydia Rutter on 31 January 1814? If so I have a son listed for them--James Mathias Kiger who settled for some period of time in Northumberland County, PA. 1806 Fairfield County Tax lists include: Anthony Kiger. Could he be another son--or might this refer to the Anthony Geiger who later can be found in Licking Co.? Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] Correction regarding Robeson Township, Berks County
    2. I checked with an expert on the subject of Berks County and learned that prior to 1752 when the county was formed from Lancaster, Philadelphia, and Chester counties, Robeson Township--where Geigertown is located, was, indeed, a part of Lancaster County. The part of Berks which is east of the Schuykill River was in Philadelphia County, and part west was in Lancaster County, and Union Township was part of Chester County. Joan

    2. No, fortunately, the fires have not gotten that far south. Right now, they are in the Cape Canaveral area....a little east in Christmas, FL....and then north in the Volusia (Daytona, New Smyrna, Ormond Beach area). I guess you've heard by now that the NASCAR races in Daytona were cancelled. Sure was shocked to hear that. Daytona depends on that for their main source of income. Heard there was a little rain tonight in Leesburg (northwest of Orlando). We need to pray that it will spead over our way. I'm watching the news coverage about the fire. That's all that's been on my channel for two days. The reporters are so tired....you can really tell in their voices. Pray for rain for us......Stuart, south Florida areas...W. Palm, Ft. Pierce, are all fine. We did have a fire yesterday in Holopaw, FL (Osceola Co) but it's been extinguished. Mary

    3. Hi, Mary, Even though I, too, have Geiger/Kiger ancestry, I'm writing to ask about the fires there in Florida. Do you know how far south they extend? Do they go as far south as Stuart [on the Atlantic Coast down toward West Palm Beach]? My father's sister has property in Stuart and her daughter & granddaughter are supposed to go down there on the 4th for 2 weeks. We'd all like to know if that area is in any danger. Do you mean that you have YOUR John Geiger located in NJ and then MD and then Westmoreland or that you have found A John Geiger who COULD be yours in those places? There were John Geigers in each of those three places but not the SAME John Geiger as far as I know. There was a Simon Geiger in New Jersey but he didn't have a son named John--at least not one who was living and named in his father's will written in 1786 and probated in 1787. There may actually have been more than one John Geiger in Old Frederick County, MD. I know of at least one John Geiger (born 1798) in Westmoreland but he was born too late to be yours. Any further details you could provide might help us to identify your John Geiger. Joan

Geigertown is named for Paul Geiger who emigrated from Berwangen, Northern Kraichgau, Germany in 1749 on the Fane. Of interest is that there was a George Geiger who came over from Berwangen on the ship with Paul. The two were not brothers but are thought to be related. George Geiger settled in Lancaster County and he can be found in the records of Trinity Lutheran Church and is listed as the "recently arrived servant of Jacob Dannbach." In addition to Paul of Geigertown and George of Lancaster, four other members of the Berwangen Geigers emigrated to Pennsylvania. Paul's brother Johannes settled in Lancaster County and also attended Trinity Lutheran Church. it should be noted that in a communion record from this church dated 15 October 1751 John is listed with Wilhelm and Eva Barbara Geiger of the Christian Geiger family although the list is NOT alphabetical--so I would assume at the very least the two Geigers knew each other. Johann Jacob Geiger, a first cousin of Paul and Johannes can also be found in the Trinity Lutheran Lancaster records. Another Paul Geiger from this same Geiger familiy arrived in Phila. on the Samuel in 1737 and settled in Philadelphia where he can be found in the records of St. Michael's and Zion Church. This Paul Geiger had a sister Anna who also emigrated. I have fairly extensive records on all of the Berwangen Geigers both in Germany and in Pennsylvania--and I plan to print it in our newsletter within the coming year. It should be noted that members of another Geiger family from Ittlingen, Germany, which is very near to Berwangen, also lived in Robeson Township, Berks County. This is Christopher Geiger, son of Valentine Geiger of Ittlingen. Christopher Geiger's second wife was Mary Robeson, daughter of the Robeson for whom the township was named.     3. THE PRICE THEY PAID Have you ever wondered what happened to those men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or the hardships of the Revolutionary War. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurist. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners, men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldier or both looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge and Middleton. At the Battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis, had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. The owner quietly urged General George Washington to open fire, which was done. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home after the war to find his wife dead, his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. They were not wildeyed rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of the Divine Province, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor". I, too, live in Florida....Orlando....and would like to know if we are related.....since my paternal grandmother was a Geiger. Mary Phillips Orlando, FL Update: Fires have spread to Christmas, FL now. That is 25 miles east of Orlando and where my maternal grandmother was raised. It's directly east of Cape Canaveral......these fires are sooooo sad. The Daytona, Ormond, Holly Hill area is about 60 miles north of Orlando.

    3. Joan, Thanks for the feedback. I by no means feel I have exhausted my options. My only limitation is time to search :( and I know I will ultimately find a connection. Compared to some of the other lines I am working this should be an easy one. I haven't yet hit the Archives with the goal of finding my Geigers. I am really just getting started with them. I just happened across the 1850 info online. :) Emily was married to Edward Marion Lentz (1878-1935). Not sure where, but likely Kosciusko Co. Steve, I have a couple suggestions--but you appear to have already thought this out well so you most likely have considered this. First, have you tried to obtain a death certificate for Emily? Have you tried finding her with her parents either on the 1880 (assuming she was born in time to be on there) or 1900 census (assuming she didn't marry by 1900)?
