    2. Helen, I am going to pass that information along to someone who just yesterday asked me about Kylers in PA who moved to Greene County, Tennessee--this could help them. They had once of twice seen the name spelled Kyger and contacted me about that. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] Where have all the Geigers gone?
    2. Isn't it getting a bit far astream from Geiger to be posting things about Keyler, Kyer, Kyger? Isn't this a GEIGER discussion list? What next- Kesyer, Mayer, Prior-- gee these are similar to Geiger too...NOT. I see more non- GEIGER postings here than actual Geiger postings. Perhaps the list should be renamed "anything BUT Geiger"...

Ayers (born August 2, > 1863) on April 7, 1907; Floyd County 7July 1998 I don't think I have put my reaction to the above post on this list. It's both interesting and confusing. Of the Kygers Maggie found that she didn't recognize, several are from the family of Daniel and Charity (Lines) Kyger. They are: Martha J. Kyger married Jacob W. Stoner November 9, 1864; Franklin County Amanda Kyger married Nathaniel Fish November 12, 1868; Franklin County Candance Kyger married Andrew M. Bell April 8, 1871; Fountain County. She died 25 June 1902. Here's where things get interesting. > Ulysses V. Kyger married Ella Y. Payton. He was either married or born > November 3, 1874; Floyd County I have a Ulysses V. Kyger who was born 23 Mar 1831 and married Margaret McCaw. They had three children, Edmund Douglas Kyger b. ca 1864, Mary Louella "Ella" Kyger, b. 6 Mar 1865, and Bertie. There is a whole story attached to this couple. I have a letter written by Margaret (McCaw) Kyger from Monon, IN dated 18 June 18 In her letter among other things, Margie (the name with which she signed the letter) told how Bertie hasn't grown and isn't well any of the time. She says, "I wish Mother could see him. I know she could tell me something to do that would help him." She adds that she is not well herself. She writes, "Eddie and Ella are out with Vird all the time." She mentions an "Uncle Abe" and "Kim" (? unsure of first letter) who lost his wife leaving 4 children, the youngest one week old. She addresses the letter to "SIster", but calles her Cannie in the letter. (Candessa Kyger) "Tell Mary Bassett and Amanda that I am not dead. I expect they think I am for they never write." I have a picture of her and she looks like a very proper lady, but she sounds like a sick, lonesome woman in her letter. My mother told me that Vird left for town one day and was never seen again. Bertie and Margaret died. In the 1880 census of Floyd County, New Albany Twsp. I found Eddie and Ella in the household of their grandfather, Daniel. It was shortly after Charity died. I wasn't sure if they were there to take care of grandpa or for him to take care of them. I am comfortable that the letter verifies the whole relationship. Now, there just can't be two Ulysses V. Kygers in Indiana at the same time. So who is Ella Y. Payton? We've all been having fun letting our imaginations run wild. Any scenarios you'd like to contribute? It's going to be interesting when we finally I.D. her. Back to the list and another mystery. > Mary L. Kyger (born March 2, 1865) married John W. Ayers (born August 2, > 1863) on April 7, 1907; Floyd County Vird's daughter, Mary Louella (Ella), was born 6 Mar 1865. (Death Certificate) I would immediately assume they are the same people, BUT Mary Louella Kyger b. 6 Mar 1865 never married until she married my grandfather (Daniel F. Havens) as his second wife. Anyone is free to tackle any of this. Dorothy

Carol, well that didn't take you long to get the record for White Oak Church. The names in the first generation or so sure sound like names that fit into the Henckel-Geigers. This sounds like something that should be compared with Eleanor Myers' Benjamin Geiger family that settled in Westmoreland. Your Richard being born about 1790 couldn't be a brother to her Benjamin born in 1777 (he only had one brother Charles) but I do think they may be related. The names in the family are just way to similar. Thanks for sharing the chart of the early generations with us--maybe someone will come up with a connection as we study the Geigers in this area over the next couple months. Joan

    3. Joan, the LDS records, beginning on 18 July 1830, of White Oak Church provided the DOB documentation for Richard and Maria's (Mary?) children - William Aaron and Benjamin Harman. The church began in 1825 so the records did not provide anything additional on Richard's background - so I am sill fishing. The 1850 census from Southampton Twp. Westmoreland County PA shows John Geiger (age 56), Josiah Geiger (age 21), Mary E. Geiger (age 25) and Simon Geiger (age ll months)., living 4 houses away from "my" Richard Geiger (age 60), Mary (age 50), and 10 children - George, Henry, John, Elias, Aaron, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Catherine, and Mary. Next house is John Jr. (32) Rebecca (21), Solomon (3), Mary (2), and Matilda (10 months). I have several John Geigers, but the age of this John Geiger does not match any of them. Also, maybe there is a connection between John and Richard (brothers?) or beween John and John Jr. (father and son?) Any info or ideas? Thanks for any help. Beth Garland forwarded to me her solution to the AOL digest problem--but I found a better one. I learned that I could set the size of the digests for my lists--so I did. Be kind--I am a new listowner and just learning. This is what I did. I set the maximum size of the digests to 20,000 which is the largest size file AOL will accept without creating those annoying attachments. So all of you in digest mode may begin receiving a digest a bit more frequently and the AOL subscribers won't need to worry about attachments--MIME or otherwise. Joan

    3. To Kaye, Joan, and to all our Geiger kinfolk, I would just like to say that I hope & pray, Kaye and her family come out of this "FIRESTORM" intack ...and to THANK ALL of the 44 states and the more than 5000 firefighters who have come to our aide..They are indeed HEROES one and ALL.. This is history in the making... We had a fire come with in 1/4 mile of us 3 weeks ago, which was dropping hot ashen embers on our home and property...like Kaye my files, photos, family mementos, were and still are packed... (We live in Clay County,FL -just south of Jacksonville, Duval Co.) .. I also packed and moved a 1800's roll top travel trunk that belonged to one of my Geiger ancestors... When we think of how many fires our ancestors faced...we are blessed to have the technology and trained people to help us face these dangers... Our ancestors just had to grab and go....usually to return to nothing... I just want to say THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR THE HELP YOU ARE GIVING US HERE IN FLORIDA...from one of your many Geiger kinfolk here in Florida... 3. Hi, ran across this item in the 1st Series - Vol. XL (Vol. I 1704-1739): Run away from Mr. Warrell at Trenton in West-New-Jersey, on the 30th of November past, at Night, a Scotch Servant Man, named ARCHIBALD KIER, about 24 Years of Age, middle Stature, slender, but well-Limb'd, brown Hair, but wears a Wigg, pitted with the Small-Pox, talks pretty broad Scotch, and writes a tolerable good hand. Had on, a dark brown Drugget Coat full trim'd, but close Sleeves. Whoever brings him to his said Master, or secures him till he can be fetch'd, shall have all reasonable Satisfaction, and whosoever shall Conceal, Harbour and Entertain the said Servant, or Counsel him to absent himself from his said Service, will be prosecuted according to Law. -from the Pennslyvania Gazette, Dec. 1-8, 1737 Note: I copied this as it was written in the book. Hope it will help someone. Helen

Then they took a Lt. up in the helicopter and showed the fire to him. You could see the long line of fire as the helicopter went sideways so the Lt. could see better. The helicopter has set the Lt. back down and gone for gas. They will pick him up later. This is been such a community effort. Some of the people in Volusia Co. have been allowed to go back to their homes. Some of the residents of Flaglar Co. don't understand English and that is not a slur to our Spanish speaking or other who doing speak English but to those people who are so dense that they don't understand the real danger of this kind of fire. They keep saying,"when will we get to go home" just after being told that Flaglar Co. is closed to everyone but those involved with the fires. A father & son decided to loot and were caught immediately. This was ;yesterday. The Baptist church has a Patriotic service this morning and Channel 6 had it on tv as long as possible. The church has given over their building to as a command post for Volusia Co. They furnished meals, beds, etc. It was something to see this large church of 2800 people being hosed down and kept standing. It was to serve a purpose. At the service the firefighters got a standing ovation. Like I said, they are going to be spoiled when they get home. I'm working on my albums now so that I can take them with me. I'm also going to take my e-mail address book. My son just might let me use his computer. He uses his for business, but maybe I can handwrestle it from him. Or maybe I can use the "I'm your mother" technique. Does that work on a son that will soon be 36? I doubt it. I just heard from Margery Jones. We are going to exchange information. I'm going to be waiting for info. Isn't it exciting to find new 'cousins?' By the way, it was announced that only 5% of the fires is contained in Volusia Co. I was hoping that the helicopter would come back so we could see what was happening with this new set of fires. These latest are in a wooded area near the Wekiva River. I understand that new firefighting coats have been ordered and should be here soon. The yellow ones that are worn in other areas are too hot down here. Like I said, everyone is trying to meet their needs. A convenience store put up a large jar...sort of like a pickel jar (sour) and in three days they gathered over $1,000. This store is in a rural area like ours. The manager said she had a list from the person in charge of the firefighters in their area. She and a coworker were going shopping for them. Well, its thundering now. I have to get off. Please feel free to share any of my correspondence with the list. I've had several LD calls from family, worried that we are in harms way. Had to reassure them that I will get out if necessary. The smoke contains a minute particle that is not good for those of us with asthma...so I'm staying inside until Tuesday when it is exercise day. Have to keep those lungs pumping. Take care and remember us in your prayers. Don't forget that we need a nice easy rain for several days...a real good soaking. Talk to you later, Kay

If you are sending messages under another e-mail address (your son's) you will not be able to post a message to the list since the list is closed and only subscribers can post to it. You can send messages to me privately and I will keep the list informed. > > I just heard from Margery Jones. We are going to exchange information. I'm > going to be waiting for info. Isn't it exciting to find new 'cousins?' Margery Jones just contacted me and I recognized right away from what she said that she is your cousin descending from Daniel Kyger and Ann Henthorn. She said either you found her or she found you through the Family Tree Maker World Family Tree CDs. I am going to be looking at everything I can put together on your Daniel while working on part 2 of my article on the Greene County, Pennsylvania Kiger family--they just have to be related in some way. Monongalia County, VA (now WV) where Daniel lived is very near to Greene County. Fielding Kiger/Kyger was also living there and I am told that his descendants were invited to the Greene County Kiger reunions. Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] HEROES--PRESENT DAY
    2. kay bolls
    3. Hi, Joan & All: This is the day after the 4th and Florida is still burning. Todays subject is not genealogical...except it is something that you can put in your present day notes. America has sent their firefighters from 44 states, to date. They have become very precious to the people of Central Florida. It is hard to imagine, I suppose, just what these people are going through...the possibility of losing their worldly possessions...those family Bibles, etc. The efforts your firefighters are making to save these homes is so heartwarming. We have had nothing but continued coverage of this fire on our three major stations, ABC, CBS & NBC. We do know that one couple went back to their home, found a note from a firefighter stating that they were sorry that the family lost a single off their roof...and they proped the shingle beside the house to be found. Two firefighters were nearly in tears because they couldn't save a structure. Its hard to believe that so many fires are burning in so many places at one time. This morning, we learned that another one was found in Longwood...Waikiva Park. I'm not familiar with the area or exactly what it is called. But your firefighters were right on the job, putting that sucker out! There is a restaurant where the owner was closing up and was approached by the fire chief...asking if they could use their place...permission was granted. Last night, the news media took us on tour...the front booths are loaded with clothing...articles needed for the firefighters, cough drops, things for the eyes, pain medication, snacks, goodies...you name it...they had it for these heroes of the fire. They are feeding firefighters around the clock. Oh yes, lots and lots of water. I understand that some residents who were told to evacuate, left their house keys with the firefighters, telling them to use the showers, rest take a swim...that there were swim suits they could use. When your firefightes come home, America, they are going to be just a wee bit spoiled. The people of Central Florida have fallen in love with them. We would rather drive by the fire station and see them sitting in front, watching traffic...earning their money that way, than having to put out fires such as these...well, any fire. So, when you are asked to increase their pay, give the increase. They have proven to Central Florida that they are ready to take on any problem fire. Central Florida is losing not only acreage...500,000 to date, but revenue. You can be proud of these people who guard your own communities. They are going above and beyond the call of duty. They have tried to save businesses as well as animals. We thank you. I understand that 65 more people and equipment are coming down from North Carolina. Thank you. Why am I concerned? I live in the country on ten acres. We have five, ten and twenty acres in my little neighborhood. We lost 20 acres just a couple weeks ago. Our firefighters who were only a couple minutes away, put it out and stayed on the job until they were sure that there would be no reoccurrence. I'm sure you have seen State Road 46 & I-95 on the map. I'm just down the road a piece. Another thing, I have bronchial asthma and the smoke is a natural enemy. Right now, I'm alright, but me and my oxygen tanks may have to go to southern Florida to visit our son. They have had way more rain. Sorry this is so long, but many people here have been shedding tears for their momentoes they had to leave. I intend to take my notebooks, albums, computer disks and antique dolls when I go. My husband will stay and our tenants will help look after the property. Not having to worry about me will be a big help. So far, 400 homes that we know of have been lost. Some people only had five minutes to evacuate. Just think what you would take if you were told that you had only five minutes to leave. Some were told to get the car keys and go. What would you take if you had to face a choice like that? Guess its backup time for all of us! Thank you, America, for sharing your firefighters. We love them! Kay from Geneva, FL PS: Joan...I saw a N.J. fire truck on our news. Usually, you can't see the insignia. Just saw a man by the name of Ross Fenton from NJ on our news. I'm watching the tv while typing. The news media was interviewing a few firefighters from NJ just now...they were asked why leave their home and come here to fight fires on the 4th of July??? The answer was that it was a job that had to be done. A Maryland contengent was to leave yesterday heading for Central FL.

    2. This message which was intended for the list came to me instead due to Rootsweb's new policy to bounce any list mail that contains either HTML or other non-text content. So I would ask Deborah (and everyone else) to send mail intended for the list in plain ASCII text in the future. If anyone needs help with that I would be happy to try to find the answers for you. I did want to make sure that Deborah's message was passed on to the list. So here it is. Please reply either to the list or to Deborah at: callicott@pobox.com Thanks, Joan > To Kaye, Joan, and to all our Geiger kinfolk, > I would just like to say that I hope & pray, Kaye and her family come > out of this "FIRESTORM" intack ...and to THANK ALL of the 44 states and > the more than 5000 firefighters who have come to our aide..They are > indeed HEROES one and ALL.. > This is history in the making... 2. Kay, no need to apologize in this instance for reporting something of a non- genealogical nature. I know all of our list members are "family" and want to know that a valued member of our Geiger family or researchers is all right! You haven't lost your knack for storytelling--but oh how I wish you were telling us a fictional tale instead of relaying so clearly factual events. What you are witnessing on the part of the firefighters is very much in the spirit of the Fourth of July and what makes America great. Our thoughts are with you! Joan

    1. [GEIGER-L] North Carolina Keigers--Selena born about 1843
    2. I received a query from a researcher trying to identify a Selena/Salena A. Keiger who married Jeremiah Wrenn. We have been looking at all the Selena Kiger/Keigers on the 1850 census to try to determine which is the right one. There are 3 possible Selana Kigers--all born within a few years of each other. I checked Faye Moran's Web Page on this Kiger family and learned that Simon Kiger and Mary (Polly) Moser had a daughter Selina age 6 in 1850 but she is listed on the web page as having married Hart Sapp and not Jeremiah Wrenn. So I guess we can rule her out. Simon Kiger is the son of Adam Geiger/Kiger, Jr. and his wife Christina Moser, and grandson of Adam Geiger, Sr. and Maria Margaretha Fiedler. The second Selena is the child of George Kiger and Elizabeth (I suspect she is Elizabeth Shouse based on Stokes County, NC marriage bonds). This Selena is also age 6 (they didn't want to make this too easy for us!). George and Elizabeth married in Dec. 1843--so I suspect this Selena was born in 1844 and no earlier. Does anyone know who this George Kiger is the son of? Also does anyone know who this Selena married? I have nothing that I can find quickly on this George. The third Selena is the daughter of Henry and Eliza (or Nancy) Kiger and Faye's web page says she was born in 1841. Henry Kiger is the son of Jacob and Nancy Kiger, and Jacob is the son of Adam Geiger and Maria Margaretha Fiedler. My first inclination would be to say she is the most likely candidate to be the correct Selena since this branch of the Geiger/Kiger family was more prone to using the Keiger spelling--and in the NC Kigers the spelling from family to family tends to be more consistent than it is in other Kiger families. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Joan

They are supposed to be converted to text files--that could explain why Delia got the virus warning when she went to download it. Did you get a warning that the file could contain a virus? Do you have the software to decode MIME messages? I never bothered with it myself. I have never seen a rootsweb attachment come through as a Mime attachment! A couple others also told me they had no trouble downloading and opening the file. HMMM! I really think Delia has either a computer problem or a problem with her AOL software. I may suggest she either go to single message mode or else open a free hotmail or mailcity e-mail account and get her digests sent to that account--they won't be turned into attachments that way. With the smarlist software that rootsweb is now using it is difficult for anyone to sub themselves in both modes to their list using the same e-mail address, and I wanted to monitor both modes--so I subbed in digest mode at hotmail and get my single messages sent to AOL. 1. [GEIGER-L] Kiger/Kyger/Teagarden/Bassett
    2. I am working on figuring out how this all ties together. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I have a Daniel Kyger born 31 January 1772 in Hampshire County, VA--now WV (his name at birth was Benjamin Kyger but somewhere along the line he adopted the name Daniel). He is idenitified in an 1808 deed as "Daniel Kyger formerly known as Benjamin." He is the son of George Kyger and Mary Beeler. George Kyger is the son of John Georg Geiger, brother of Valentine Geiger, and Maria Catharina Henckel, daughter of the Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel. On 22 April 1813 Daniel married Anna Maria "Mariah" Teagarden, born 14 April 1788, and the couple lived in Milford Township, Butler County, Ohio. Of interest to us is the fact that Anna Maria Teagarden was the daughter of Moses Teegarden born in Frederick, MD, and his wife Mary Huston (who is sometimes shown as Mary Waldour). Next I have a much more recent Kiger Teagarden connection. Grace Louise Teegarden born 14 July 1913 married 25 August 1929 to Melvin Kiger, son of Charles and Lettie (Barr) Kiger of Ohio. Now I know who this Charles Kiger is who married Lettie/Letta Barr--he was born in 1868 and is the son of George W. Kiger and his second wife, Carilla Gallagher, of Amanda Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. I don't have a son Melvin listed for this couple--can someone help me out with this.? I have three children listed as follows: Ethel Kiger, Fanny Fay Kiger (born 1898 and died 1901), and Desil/Dessel Kiger born 1902 and died 1967. Was there a fourth child for this couple or are Dessel and Melvin the same person? Finally I have in my files Golda Alice Tegarden born Aug. 8, 1885, who married Walter Scott Bassett. This comes from the research of Dorothy Vekasi. I have Walter Scott Bassett listed as the son of Charles Hall Bassett and Mary Ann Kyger. Mary Ann Kyger is the daughter of Daniel Kyger (born 1807) and Charity Lines. Note: this is a different Daniel Kyger than the one above. This Daniel Kyger is the son of John Kyger/Kiger and his wife Sarah Parrish. John Kyger and Sarah Parrish were married in Kentucky. Does anyone have access to the Tegarden book so that we could hopefully find out whether (and how) all of the above Tegardens are related and just what that might mean in regard to possible relationship among these various Kiger/Kyger families? Also another wild thought on these Kiger/Kygers. Mary Waldour mentioned above--could this have been the original surname for our elusive Walducks who were behind the family of George W. Kiger of Amanda Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, also listed above? Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Joan

    3. Joan, Why not just have her forward the offending message? I'm too LAZY to copy down what an offending message says and the other thing is she might send a copy to AOL's tech support.
