Refresh my memory then--are Henry, James, and John children of Daniel? If not, how are they related to him? Does any of them have a son Charles born about 1850 in Monroe County, Ohio? >From what you said above I wonder if any of your Kygers were left in Monroe by 1850. Joan

    2. Thanks, that helps me clarify things. I am still studying the wills, it is hard with the old handwriting. The Jacob whose wife petitioned for a guardian apparently died somewhere in 1790, as the petition is dated 9/17/1790. On one of the wills, it looks like the last name could even be Geiker. I will keep working on the wills. If anyone recognizes the other names listed, let me know. Sharon

    1. [GEIGER-L] more on Ohio Kigers in Knox, Clinton, Jackson and Licking Cos.
    2. In my continuing effort to sort out the Ohio Kigers I am wondering if anyone currently on the list can identify the following individuals. I am also in hopes that someone (how about you Dick--do you have access to this?) can check the census listings I quote below? Ohio Census 1820: Knox County: John Kiger, Morgan Township, page 92 Licking County: Samuel Kiger, Madason, page 38 I am pretty sure this Samuel is the one who married Susannah Nimerick in Knox County in 1816. I know he later moved to Clinton County, Ohio, and later to Parke County, Indiana where he died in 1842. Ohio Census 1830: Clinton County: Benjamin Kiger, Washington Township, page 124. Also can anyone tell me if Washington Township is near the border with Gallia County? Samuel Kiger, Chester Township, page 237. This is the same Samuel as above--I think. Now I know that the Anthony Geiger in Licking County on this census is Peggy Loos' Anthony--we have resolved that question. Monroe County: Daniel Kiger Henry Kiger James Kiger John Kiger all are living in Salem Township and are on page 107. Kay are these YOUR Kygers masquerading as Kigers or are they a different family? If we can answer some of these questions we will be well on our way to sorting our these Kigers! Joan

The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. 2 When at last after much hard work you have evolved the mystery that you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that." 3 You search ten years for your grandmother's maiden name to eventually find it on a letter in a box in the attic. 4. You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then. 5. The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. 6. Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames. 7. John, son of Thomas the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at the age of 10. 8. Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. 9. Another genealogist has just insulted the keeper of the vital records you need. 10. The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share. 11. The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale of insolvency. 12. The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead end line has been lost due to fire, flood, or war. 13. The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. 14. The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. 15. None of the pictures in your recently deceased grandmother's photo album have names written on them. 16. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued or was named in a will. 17. You learn that your great aunt's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "Somewhere in New York City." 18. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. 19. The 37 volume, 16,000 page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. 20. You finally find your great grandparents' wedding record and discover that the bride's father was named John Smith. --------------B6FDA186912C7D72040E6634--

They were most likely brothers or father and son--they were Johann Henrich and Johann Jacob. It would appear that both settled in Berks County, PA--but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that some members of this family settled in Montgomery County (or what was Philadelphia County prior to 1784--due to the records you located for Guckers in the Goshenhoppen Reformed Church there). I think it is safe to say that YOUR Henry Gu"cker/Gicker/Geiger is the one who married Maria Magdalena Ho"ll of Bern Twp., Berks County, PA on Mar. 19, 1793--and their first child Eve was born in Oct. 1793. We already knew that there were multiple Henry Gucker/Gicker/Geigers in the area--and we never were sure just who your Henry's parents were. Also, we are not really sure just which Henry is the one whose will is dated in 1810. One thing you failed to mention is the Jacob who died in Tulpehocken in 1776--or whose will was written in that year--I am not just sure which. It would be interesting to see just who he lists as his children. I would think that this Jacob is the immigrant Jacob. He could be your Henry's father. Also, what happened to Henry the immigrant--it would seem he would be too old to be the one who died in 1810--I think that is the problem here--I think your Henry is the son of one of the two immigrants. I don't have access to Montgomery or Phila. County Wills--but it might be worthwhile to look at those. Joan

    2. Joan, I received the four wills from Berks Co and we may have a problem. Henrich Gucker, dated 1810, lists the following children: Catharina, Maria Barbara(deceased)married to Fredrich Foland, Eve Gucker, Michael Gucker and Daniel Gucker. There is no mention of Mararetha, Mary Elizabeht, Peter, Elizabeth or Henry (my line) Jacob Gucker left no will and his widow, Esther/Hester petitions that someone be appointed guardian for their son Jacob who is under 14 in 1791 Daniel Gucker, leaves his entire estate to his daughters Catharine and Susanna and instructs that since they are both over 21, they are in charge and will divide the estate themselves. Michael Gucker left no will, so petitions etc filed to settle estate. He mentions wife Christina children Soloman, John, Benjamin, Joseph, Daniel, Susan, Peggy and Polly. Back to Henrich's will, I think this indicates that my Henry is not the son of Henrich. What do you think Sharon

Kay, interesting that James Kiger spells his name with an I while his father spells it with a Y. It is Walter John Kiger whose ancestor is Leonidas but it would appear to be a DIFFERENT Leonidas than you name above. I think there are at least 3 Leonidas Kigers we have found so far (including yours). The third one was in WV. I have a question for you pertaining to Monroe County, Ohio Kyger/Kigers as your Kygers are the only family of that surname that I know of for a fact who lived there in the mid 1800s. I am looking for the parents of a Charles Kiger who married in Wetzel County, WV on 14 March 1871 to Adaline Tubaugh. Charles was 21 and Adaline was 20 at the time of their marriage. The marriage record states that Charles was born in Monroe County, Ohio, and Adaline was born in Iowa. This would make Charles' approximate birth year 1849/1850. I feel certain that the above Charles is in some way tied to the Kiger family of Greene County, PA but I can't figure out how he is connected. I have so many puzzle parts but am missing some crucial pieces. Joan

    2. I just came across this item. Apparently Geigertown was still known as Geigers Mills as recently as 1921. Here is an obit from the Reading Times Tuesday 8 March 1921: "George Geiger, Geigers Mills, March 8 (Special)--George Geiger, a lifelong resident of this place, died of a complication of diseases, aged 61 years. Death occurred in the homestead which he occupied since he was six years of age, and on the farm which he tilled since he reached his majority. He was the son of the late Jacob and Ann (nee Sponagle) Geiger. There survive his widow, Elizabeth (nee Geiger), one daughter, Anna, wife of Harvey Kratz; his aged parents and five grandchildren. He was a member of Camp 388, P.O.S. or A., this place; Neversink Lodge, I.O.O.F., and Union Lodge, F. and A.M., both of Birdsboro. Funeral next Friday at 11 AM, at the house. Further services in St. Paul's M.E. Church. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery." I read that obit five times and still can't figure out the part about his being the son of the late Jacob and Ann Geiger which is then followed by the statement that he is survived by his aged parents????? Perhaps it means Jacob died and Ann remarried and the aged parents are Ann and his step-father. Joan

Yes--from what you are describing Geiger Mills on the map is what is now Geigertown--the town named for Paul Geiger of Berwangen, Germany. I was pretty sure it would be but couldn't be certain without knowing the exact location since Christopher Geiger's mill in Gibraltar could also be called "Geiger Mills." The history of Robeson Township, Berks County states: "Geiger's Mill was built in 1781 by Paul Geiger, and this remains much as it was when erected. Its master wheel was in use for more than 100 years, fed by the Cold Run springs and powering the mill's crude grinding machinery. In later years gasoline power replaced water power. Near Geiger's Mill, John Geiger had a carding mill, and Paul Geiger had a sickle factory; both were discontinued. Close by was the Cold Run Creamery, in operation in 1885." The article goes on to say that in 1818 there were 11 mill sites in Robeson Township and several forges. Among the grist mills was: Geiger Mill in Gibraltar (later Kirlin's Mill). This reference was to Christopher Geiger's Mill. Remember now that Christopher Geiger was the son of Valentine Geiger of Ittlingen, Germany. I recently posted the history of the Berwangen Geigers on the list, and the Ittlingen Geigers are not known to be related to them, but it is possible that at some point back in Germany they could have been related since Ittlingen and Berwangen are very near each other and the Berwangen Geigers can be traced back in the mid 1600s to Richen which is even closer to Ittlingen (it is just south of Ittlingen). I looked on my map of Pennsylvania and found a town called Geistown sort of southeast of Johnstown near Westmoreland, Cambria, and Somerset counties--but I don't find any Geigertown. While we are on the subject of place names in Berks County I will point out an item from Oley Valley Heritage which shows a map of the Oley Valley Settlement in 1775. On this map right on the northern border of Robeson Township northwest of "Bird's Upper Forge" is shown Geiger Tavern. This would appear to be located in the area of Gibraltar--which would mean a probable connection to Christopher Geiger and not Paul Geiger. Joan

Also is Geigertown the same as Geigers Mills on the 1895 > Berks County PA Map. Carol, I can't answer the Somerset County question but I will take a stab at the Berks County place names. There were actually two Geiger families who had mills at one time in Robson Township, and which might be listed on your map. Walter John Kiger may be able to answer this better than I can--and I am pretty sure that Geigertown WAS once known as Geiger Mills--BUT there is also another possibility as to the place name on your map. Christopher Geiger (of the Valentine Geiger family) also lived in Robeson Township and had a mill or mills. He was located in Gibraltar--which is in the western part of Robeson Township just to the southeast of Reading. A good point of reference would be the town of Birdsboro which would be to the East of Gibraltar (and maybe slightly further south). Now again using Birdsboro as a reference look to the south of Birdsboro to the southeastern tip of Robeson Township--just to the west of French Creek State Park. This is where Paul Geiger's mills were located and where Geigertown can be found. Now you can tell me which place you have located on you map as Geiger Mills. Joan

Mary, I hope Deb Callicott is paying attention to this chart--since it looks suspiciously as if it is connected in some way I can't figure out to her Geigers. Deb's Geigers descend from the Orangeburg, SC Geigers--specifically Hans Ulrich Geiger and his wife Appolonia/Appolina to their son Jacob. I believe that this (or maybe Jacob's brother Felix, Jr.) is the branch of the family that moved into Georgia and Florida. I am wondering just how many Millie Sapps there are since Deb's chart lists more than one of them who don't appear to be the same Millie Sapp on your chart. Perhaps the two of you need to compare notes and perhaps we can persuade Deb to post her chart to the list for comparison purposes. Joan

    3. I have been monitoring the digest version of your Geiger mailing list for only a short time. I am submitting information for a Johann Geiger (Johann Georg or John Geiger)born circa 1821 in Wuerttemberg, immigrated to NYC circa 1844, moved to Baltimore circa 1852. First wife was Wilhelmina [-?-] who bore two children in New York and then presumbaly died. In Baltimore he married Katherine Regina Gunther and had six known additional offspring. I have been unsuccessful in locating his place of birth in Germany despite extensive investigation in the USA. There were other Geigers in NYC in the 1840/50 period some of whom were shoemakers (as was the progenitor here). I have no idea why he settled in Baltimore where he apparently had no biologic Geiger connections. Below is a summary descendancy chart of known data on Johann Georg GEIGER and children/grandchildren. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who may have even a remote connection.
