Eleanor, I am only addressing the exact question as to which counties may have split with Westmoreland during the time period above--there were others but they were well before 1800. Indiana County was attached to Westmoreland until 1806 and Armstrong County was formed in 1800 partly from Westmoreland County. Joan

I am going to throw this one out to the list. This is not specifically a GEIGER or KIGER question but we have many list members who are researching both Geigers and Kigers in Fairfield County, Ohio. An excellent researcher of early Fairfield County families (Rebecca Huddle) has been discussing with me something she recently learned about that might prove to be a source of genealogical information on early Fairfield families. So I am copying our exchange of dialogue below. Does anyone know anything about the Granville Alexandrian Society? Another researcher in Fairfield County indicated she had run into the Society and it was dealing with money. The society in at least one case was represented by Charles Sherman, I believe the father of William T. Sherman. > If so--now the question is--where does one go to find the records? Sounds like it might be helpful when researching the > early settlers of Fairfield! In the land deal that cause the problem with my ancestor, the land records have Charles R. Sherman's name, not the Granville Alexandrian Society name. Its name only appeared in the Civil Case. That peeked my curiosity! Is the Society and business group or a religious group? Who was Granville Alexandria? If they were lending money, why didn't their name appear on the land record? (I will check the next time I am in Lancaster to see if it appeared in any deed records.) Did the Society only loan money in Fairfield Co? Rebecca
Dear Geiger Cousins, First, to each of you who have written me directly, I will be responding back to each of you personally. Second, I am sending this in a variety of ways, because we have not been able to resolve the problem I am having with my e-mail bouncing back from GEIGER Rootsweb, even though we have disabled our HTML/MIME text. There is a book The Geiger's of South Carolina by Percey Geiger, and it has information on the Heresy. Also I found info in a book by the Lutheran's I forget the name of the book right now. I live in Lexington,Sc in the area that was settled by the Geiger's. Abraham,Herman, John Conrad and Jacob. Some were Indian traders on the Congaree River. There was a Emily Geiger that was a spy in the Revolutionary War it seems she took a message to Sumter to the troops there. Also a John Geiger signed the succession from the Union in South Carolina. I am working in this same line, from Abraham and Mercey, my line is Abraham Harroll one of their children. Dm

Hi, Glenda Sue and all: Anne Hammond Connell of Winter Park, FL, here. I'm new to the group. I'm descended from your Abe's brother, Felix, and Mary Martin (sister of Mercy Martin), through John Martin Geiger and Emily Joyner (Wayne Co., GA, to FL). About that Weber Heresy thing: I have been collecting articles as I come across them, but I don't have them separated into a file yet. So this is from my memory. Apparently, a mentally unbalanced couple named Weber, in the Saxe-Gotha or Orangeburg District of SC, persuaded a few similar folks that they were Jesus and Mary. They named another man as Satan and killed him. The authorities arrested them and two others, one of which was a John (I think) Geiger whom no one has been able to identify. Weber was executed and the others released. Every story I read seems to feed on the last and even brand different Geigers, even poor Abraham and Hans Ulrich, but I've yet to find proof that anyone was "banished" from SC. Since the L.D. Geiger Bible says Abe died 7 May 1766 and Ulrich applied to GA in July, 1766 for permission to remove to GA with wife, two children and one slave, for purpose of farming, I believe Abe died in SC (if the Bible date is correct). Ulrich settled near the Ebenezer community founded by the rest of their Swiss group (who hadn't chosen to go to Saxe-Gotha). Bottom line: too many people have written irresponsible things over the years and much damage has been done to our family name. Example: At a conference in Augusta, GA, I attended the lecture of a well-known publisher. He mentioned the Geiger/Kyger name as an example of how names can be misspelled. So, in the Q & A session, I prefaced my question by saying that the Geigers were one of my lines. He reared back and said, "Ah, the infamous Geigers of SC! Oh, well, I guess there were maybe a few that weren't so bad!" Everyone was appalled - and I was so furious I couldn't trust myself to reply. Not a word about all the community and church leaders, educators, Rev. soldiers, etc., they produced. I digress! I will try to write more later if have time. I had been planning a book on the Gyger/Geiger family from Switzerland to the South, but think I'd better begin with one on the Swiss roots only. I have records from the 1500's, with most collaterals, to when they left. They are still being translated, but already show that from the beginning, the Gygers were mostly vintners and leaders of their church and communities. Their vineyards are still growing on the slopes of the Rheingau around and above Haslach, Berneck, Widnau, Diepoldsau, etc.! A thrilling sight! Hope this helps for now. Anne
Thank you for explaining about the Weber Heresy. If you have time at a later date to write more about this, I am sure we would all be interested. A Geiger book would be a welcome sight too. I look forward to reading more from you. Glenda Sue Vize

Are the two connected? If so how? > My only comments at this time relate to the several John Adam Geyer/Geiger's in the Philadelphia ship lists. I am aware of three John Adam's in these lists and each was able to sign his name (thank goodness). By studying the characteristics of the Geyer and Geiger signatures, I find two key factors which help distinguish between the two surnames. The first is the consistent usage of the Y diaeresis (double dots over the Y) in the Geyer name while the middle G in Geiger does not have the diaeresis. The second is that the first E in German script requires "two humps" and the I in Geiger requires another "hump." Using these characteristics and limited knowledge of other family members on the same ship, I conclude the following: On the Aurora arriving 8 Oct 1744, we have Johann Adam GEYER. This ship also had other Geyers, specifically Johann Sebastian (Besigner) Geyer. Johann Sebastian was Johann Adam's father. On the Elliott arriving 24 Aug 1749, we have another Johann Adam GEYER. The characteristics in the Geyer spelling are very clear. On the Phoenix arriving 22 Nov 1752, we have Johann Adam GEIGER. There is no doubt about the spelling. There is no diaeresis. The "three humps" are hard to see since the two humps of the E blend into one wide one, but they are there. There is disagreement on the Jacob also on the Phoenix. His signature has much space between the two humps of the E which makes it look like a German U. This is why his name is listed in the index to the ship's list as Guyer with the note "read Geyer." The diaeresis is clearly present which leaves me with no doubt that this is Jacob GEYER. There is a biographical sketch of one of the Johann Adam Geyer's. I found it last summer when we visited the Lancaster County (PA) Historical Society. Since the copier was on the blink at that time, I didn't get a copy. Now I cannot locate my notes on which book it was in. Perhaps John Kiger can find that sketch again. Hopefully, it would clarify some of the church records you are trying to sort out. I do vaguely recall that the descendants of Johann Adam Geyer of this sketch included Peter Geyer and his son, John the drummer boy, of Westmoreland County, PA, Revolutionary War service. Could you please explain what the "Weber Heresy" was? I have seen it referred to on this post. Thank you. Glenda Sue Vize gsvize@aol.com
Since we seem to have several Muncie Kiger researchers, in our group I thought they may enjoy this obit of John Kiger in case they don't already have it. IN MEMORY OF JOHN KIGER, Corvan, Ind. John Kiger, oldest son of William and Sarah Gibson Kiger (deceased) was born in Delaware County, Indiana March 5, 1838 and departed this life on the morn of April 17, 1912. Age 74 years, 1 month, 12 days. His boyhood days were spent on the farm and in cleaning of the wild waste of forests which covered his native county at that time. He endured the trialed and hardships of the early pioneers, and in common with other boys at that time, he had only the benefits of the common schools for about three months each winter. Yet this ;enabled him to become a reader and during all of his life he enjoyed the communion of books and was ever alert to the current topics of the day, keeping abreast with the progress and destiny of our nation. He was united in marriage to Matilda Jane Heaton daughter of William and Peare Experience Heaton (deceased) Feb.2, 1860 by squire Joseph Swain of Muncie. To this union was born nine children viz; all of whom are still living - six boys and three girls. viz Mrs Arsula Reed of Farmland; Orville of Newark, Ohio; William of Muncie, Kelsie and Elza of Corvan; Mrs Nora Repolgle of Everett, Washington Mrs Anna Williams of Muncie; Ira and Oren P. of Columbus, Ohio. "It seems as that one, we cherished should be taken from our home But the joys that do not perish Live in our memory alone. All the years we've spent together all the happy golden hours Shall be cherished in remembrance By your lived ones and your own." He was just reaching the prime of manhood when he heard his country's call for loyal men to protect the Union and the Starry flag, which he loved and always honored. All honor to the stars and stripes and to the heroes who proudly defended them. Patriotic and loyal to the principles of the Union, he promptly offered his services to his county and went forth in the face of shot and shell as one of the nations noble defenders. He enlisted in August 1862 in Company B. of the gallant 69th Regiment for the term of three years and participated in many of the great battle of the south and west. He was with Gen. Grant in his siege of Vicksburg and engaged in some 17 active battles. On every field of battle he proved himself loyal, courageous and a heroic patriot and soldier. Farewell Comrade: Tis only a few that are left to relate the experiences of your soldier life- Through storms and clouds, down in the valley, So none could tell where the long march might end. You've seen the darkness dawn, repulse, rally - you are reunited - not foe but friend. Your arms are grounded and your ranks are broken - The brazen bugle sounds the charge no more you're waiting orders, till the word is spoken To join your brother comrades, gone before. Then let us remember that close to your heart this brother stood one of your soldier brotherhood Fresh to your mind he still appears, still honored as is by gone years; Warm hearted, thoughtful, constant friend a loyal comrade to the end. As man may, he fought his fight proved his truth by his endeavor Let him sleep in solemn night Sleep forever and forever In the spring of 1865 after hearing the guns firing a salute in glorification over the endings of the long and bloody struggle for the preservation of the Union he turned his face homeward to greet the anxious loved one there and to again renew his struggles in the pursuit of an honest living. He leaves to mourn his departure a kind and truthful wife, six sons and three daughters; 17 grand children and one great grandchild two brothers Charles and Andrew Kiger and four sisters Mrs Katie Parsons; Mrs Rebecca Harter; Mrs Maria Heath; Mrs Elizabeth Felton and many relatives and friends. He being a resident of Corvan for 22 years is well known by the community and his passing away will be felt by all - Knowing that he was coming to the place wherein his physical body had become worn out and that he must meet death soon he express himself as being ready and fully satisfied to meet the grim reaper and cease from his aches and pains. Not now but in the coming years, it may be in the better land we'll read the meaning of our tears, and there, sometime, we'll understand. Not now, tho' twill not be long this wearying commontion that marks its passage in our breast - and like the billows on the heaving ocean that ever rocks the cradle of unrest, will soon subside; tis then we'll understand. The world to us seems dark for a while the lamps go out; the stars five up their shining Our hearts give way to sad repining and we feel as though we never could smile But murmur not; some day we'll understand. Till then, we give our father unto him, who doeth all things well. by Dora Driscoll West Related to the Gibsons.
I remember something about Peter Geiger on my CD, let me check. Sharon
Our Geigers settled in Mahoning County, Ohio. Many of the family are buried in Springfield Township (I have a cemetery records book for this twp.). Gottlob (1829- 1905) was brought to America by his father, Daniel ( wife, Catharine) Geiger to Springfield Twp., Ohio. Gottlob married Gottleiba Myers, daughter of George and Mary (Koch) Myers; Gottlob and Gottleiba had 9 children: Mary Catherine (spouse, Isaiah Hoffman); Frank (Frances Elser); George; Julia; Louisa (Allen Felger); Clara (Nathaniel May); William (Matilda); Charles; and Tillie (Clinton Lipp). The county history book showed Frank Geiger living in the family homestead at the turn of the century. I haven't actively pursued this fact yet but am interested in locating cousins. My husband's line comes from Mary Catherine. Brigitte Frost

Thank you Joan - I will change the references in my files and on my web site later this weekend ... and keep an eye out for any other info coming through on Anna Margaretha. The only comment I would make on your chart would be that we are not sure that Anna Margaretha's maiden name was Stoever. I know it says so in the Monger book on the Kygers but Billie Jo Monger sent me a notice that she feels that has not been proven and wishes that information had not found its way into her book. I agree that it has not been proven and think it would be best to merely state that Anna Margaretha's maiden name is unproven as of now. Would Maggie or Russ care to comment on that? Perhaps they have found something I don't know about on Anna Margaretha. Joan

Debbie, I had thought that Anna Margaretha Kyger, wife of Christian Kyger, might be a Shaver/Shaffer, and I think Russ was leaning toward the possibility that she might be an Argenbrecht/Ergabright; and we can't rule out the possibility that she really is a Stober/Stoever. We just don't have proof of any ot those possibilities. Joan
Hi All - My name is Debbie Turner - maiden name is KYGER. I am currently in New Jersey and have been researching my family roots for just over a year - such a small amount of time compared to many of you! But I love it and find it completely eating up all my free time. I have spent most of my time finding contacts and information on the Internet and trying to match that with family documents I have found -- and creating a WebSite that will be of some value to others searching the same surnames. (It's in progress - changing daily - I am learning as I am going.) If any of you have (or know of) any web pages relating to the KYGER or GEIGER name please let me know so I can visit. >From what I can find out I believe I am a descendant of Christian Geiger as follows: Direct Descendants of Christian Geiger 1 Christian GEIGER Abt. 1700 - Abt. 1779 . +Barbara (UNKNOWN) Bef. 1738 - 2 Wilhelm "William" GEIGER Aft. 1721 - 1759 +Eva/Anna Barbara STOBER 1728 - Aft. 1759 . 3 Christian GEIGER II 1748 - Bef. 1830 . +Anna Margaretha STOEVER 1748 - Bef. 1795 4 Jacob KYGER 1778 - 1848 +Barbara SHAVER 1780 - 1857 . 5 Louis/Lewis Washington KYGER 1810 - 1884 . +Martha G. My line starts with Christian Geiger who settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1747. I know a lot of you, but want to make sure that I haven't missed anyone. My main interest is the current generations. It's been extremely satisfying when 'orphans' find their roots through my database which now contains over 11,000 people and is growing daily. And yes, I have Geigers, Gigers, Gygers, Kygers and even three Kigers. Maggie
