Marcia, I went to the LDS site (www.familysearch.org) but could not find the document in question. Usually the M prior to a number is a batch number for the LDS listings. I do not know what a batch number refers to. The second number could be a microfilm number. I placed it in their search engine and it does not reference a Geiger file. So maybe that is a national archives microfilm number. If the M is a batch number from the LDS, you can contact them from the site and see if it refers to one of their numbers. I know my ancestor was on that list and I found the microfilm at the Georgia state archives but I never tried to cross reference the numbers. Maybe if you research Ohio microfilms from the LDS or National Archives of Ohio state archives you can find the original documents. Gerry and Anne, Thanks for the response...thought it might be him, but not sure of his date of birth and if he would have been of age at the time. The complete list I found is as follows: ABRAHAM GEIGER 3 REG'T (RUTLEDGE'S) SOUTH CAROLINA STATE TROOPS. ANTHONY GEIGER CAPT. SHAVER'S RIFLE CO., OHIO MILITIA. BENJAMIN GEIGER HILL'S REGIMENT, PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA. CHARLES GEIGER CAPT. HERTZOG'S CO. (FAYETTE GREENS), PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA. CORNELIUS GEIGER 2 REGIMENT (PRAY'S), GEORGIA MILITIA. DANIEL GEIGER 1 REG'T (TAYLOR'S) VIRGINIA MILITIA. JACOB GEIGER 1 REGIMENT (RAGAN'S), MARYLAND MILITIA. JACOB GEIGER JUHAN'S BATTALION, SOUTH CAROLINA MILITIA. JACOB GEIGER JUHAN'S BATTALION, SOUTH CAROLINA MILITIA. JOHN GEIGER LIEUT. COL. DODGE'S COMMAND, MISSOURI MILITIA. JOHN GEIGER 1 RIFLE BATT'N (PINKNEY'S), MARYLAND MIL. JOHN GEIGER 5 REGIMENT (LEWIS') KENTUCKY VOLS. JOHN GEIGER 57 REGIMENT VIRGINIA MILITIA. SAMUEL GEIGER 2 REGIMENT (PRAY'S), GEORGIA MILITIA. This list does not include your Abraham or Felix, so it must exist is some other file. I will go back and try a different spelling of the last name...that could account for them not being found. Sure do remember that, Gerry. From my notes: "In 1811, Cornelius was in Capt. James BIRD's Co., of PRAY's 2nd Reg. of the GA Militia Infantry, with his nephews Jeremiah and Samuel, sons of Abraham and Mercy. He was discharged 15 Apr 1815 at Bulloch Co. Court House. He put in for soldier's lot, #107 - 333 District, 9th District, 2nd Sec. of Indian lands now called Wayne Co., GA. Was there near Tuckerville, as head of family in 1820 and in 1840. Brother Felix also removed to Wayne Co." Some of this came from Chubb GEIGER's book. "Georgia Archives say a Felix GEIGER was "Sergt. in Capt. RAWLS' Co., 15 Feb 1794", and was on records in Effingham Co. from 1784 to 1815. Chubb GEIGER said Felix and Cornelius might have served in Florida with the Georgia militia." I missed any refs. to Abraham and John serving with Felix. That sure would be a logical fit. I'll look through my files again. About the DAR/SAR - do you have evidence that they served in the Rev. War, too? That would really be great! I have Abe born 1758 to 1761, Felix 1763 and John 1765. Gerry, I'd better restate my words .... IF we have put our facts together right, that's who these three are! 16 was not too unusual to be joining the militia - those were desperate times! Re Ulrich's six known children: I don't have anything on militia service of brothers Abraham and John, but Felix (my 3rd ggf) was in Sgt. RAWLS' Co., Effingham Co., GA, from 1784 to 1815. I have his children all born in Bulloch Co., which was once part of Eff. Co. (sources may have been talking about the same place). He and brother Cornelius later put in for land grants in Wayne Co., where John Martin GEIGER (my 2nd ggf) later married. I don't have militia info on husbands of Rachel (if married) and Mary (marr. Susan, this Samuel GEIGER (1 Jun 1796, Bulloch Co., GA - 11 Sep 1861, Gainesville, Alachua, FL) is a son of Abe GEIGER and Mercy MARTIN. He's the one who had four wives. There is a lot on him in the Archives of the GEIGER List. >From my notes: [Beverly Burton says: "Corp. Jeremiah, Priv. Cornelius and Priv. He is not my gg-grandfather Samuel who was the son of Jessie and Tobitha, and was born in 1821...and he probably would not be the younger brother of Jessie (b1793), Jeremiah(b1794), David(b1795), etc, first three sons of Abraham and Mercy, because he probably would have been too young(age 16 or less) to serve in the War of 1812... That being said, he might be a descendant of Hans Jacob, and brother to or son of Herman. Or he could be a grandson of Ulric and Apollonia...but the ages would be close on eligibility... >From: "susan wilson" <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [GEIGER] Samuel Gieger >Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 14:00:57 -0400 > >Who is the Samuel Gieger on the list of veterans of the 1812 war? Hello Geiger List Members, I am new to this list and am trying to help a friend research her GEIGER family. As far as we know they were from Georgia. We do not have access to marriage records for the time period we need so we would appreciate any help we can get. We know that Anne GEIGER, daughter of Elliott and Ophelia GEIGER, married Edward HEREFORD. The marriage took place in Georgia circa 1960(?) probably in Macon or Atlanta. Would any of this information be on line? We would appreciate any information any of you have on any of the above persons. We are not in Georgia so are not able to go to the court houses for information. Thank you for your help.

I don't know whether any of our "Southern Geigers" as we call them will have information that recent but I searched the Social Security Death Index online and found two listings for E. Geiger: E GEIGER 19 Nov 1904 21 Apr 1988 30064 (Marietta, Cobb, GA) 255-01-8338 Georgia E GEIGER 04 Dec 1921 Jul 1994 30223 (Griffin, Spalding, GA) 260-30-0313 Georgia Don't know if either would be the Elliott Geiger you are looking for but it might be worth checking out if no one has more information. The marriage record you are looking for would be a little recent I would think to be found online (although some states' vital records are online for recent years). You could try writing away for these records though. Georgia has statewide marriage records available from: Georgia Dept. of Human Resources Vital Records Unit Room 217-H 47 Trinity Avenue, SW Atlanta, GA 30334 Call first for the cost of a record: 404-656-4900 Joan
Anne, Thanks for the correction...I am not very up on some of the Geigers and probably put some info in the wrong place. I'll have to be more careful. I'm sorry, my question was about Jacob, born 1797, not 1897. I should have read the message before I sent it. Thanks, Faye
I found this Geiger family on the 1850 Census from Hamilton Co, Fla, thought it might be of interest. James W Geiger 27 yrs old Born Ga Abagil 27 Ga Sarah 7 Fla Rebecca 6 Fla Mary P 4 Fla William D 3 Fla Asa 4/12 Fla I think James W's parents are Asa and Nancy Geiger. Dot
Faye, did you mean to say "Jacob GEIGER, born 1897"? I have one who was "born about 1798". Descendants say he was the son of Felix GEIGER and Mary MARTIN and was marr. to Marjory SIMMONS. He died abt. 1850 in Nassau Co., FL. PLEASE NOTE: My data base has a "cut and paste" from Deb Callicott, his direct descendant, in which she called him "son of Felix GEIGER and Marjory SIMMONS". Deb knows very well that his mother was Mary MARTIN; it was just a typo ... but others might not realize that! Don't know how I missed that. Susan, Felix GEIGER and Mary MARTIN did not have a son named James Martin - that was John Martin GEIGER, my 2nd great-grandfather. He was born in Wayne Co., GA, either in 1797 (gravestone estimate; 1860 census) - or 1798 (probate records; 1850 census) - or 1800 to 1810 (1840 census) - or 1801 (1870 census). I chose 1798, as the gravestone seemed too new! He was married in Wayne Co., GA, to Emily (Emmy) JOYNER, dau. of Charles JOYNER. I believe their license to be the one on record dated 4 Jan 1825 that says "John M. GEIGER and Amy JOYNER" (Wiregrass also says Amy). He brought his wife and first three children down to Nassau Co., FL Territory, about 1833-34 (if birth info is correct on 1850 census). Jacob GEIGER is on the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Nassau Co. The rest of their sibs also settled in FL: Margaret (mar. JOHNS?), Rachel (mar. Chesley BOATWRIGHT), Allen Bethel (marr. Abigail RIGGS; Mary Ann BUFORD), Felix, Jr. (marr. Allie SAPP) and Mary (marr. Emanuel Henry MARTIN). I'd best not join in the discussion about James GEIGER/Martha HARRIS or John W. GEIGER/Martha F. T. KING. My data is so confusing, I'm about ready to wipe it all out and start over!! <G> Anne C. -----Original Message----- From: susan wilson <[email protected]> Jacob is listed as the son of Felix or Cornelius, not Abraham as I incorrectly stated. Anyway, as I told Faye in a follow-up, James Martin, son of Felix is assigned the same birth year so they would be twins or born at either end of the year to fit into Felix's line...which is why I think it may be Cornelius.
I GOOFED. Before you all descend upon me I sent another note to Faye and told her Jacob is listed as the son of Felix or Cornelius, not Abraham as I incorrectly stated. Anyway, as I told Faye in a follow-up, James Martin, son of Felix is assigned the same birth year so they would be twins or born at either end of the year to fit into Felix's line...which is why I think it may be Cornelius. Now the one question that keeps bothering me about John W. Geiger is that his children's names do not follow a pattern if he is indeed the son of Cornelius.(I may be carrying these naming patterns too far, I know). His first son is named John Phillip. This leads to the question if he is the son of Philip Geiger? Faye mentioned an LDS listing that put Phillip's birth date at 1788 and that Felix is the father. A long time between the birth of one child to Felix and the next in the late 1790's. One possibility is that other children in between have not been found or died very young. Another possibility is that Felix may have been married to someone else who died after the birth of Phillip. Or maybe Phillip is incorrectly placed altogether. We know he witnessed a deed with Jacob Geiger and Steven Denmark and someone stated he died in Savannah. Who are the parents? This name Philip is very prominent in those northern Geigers...are we seeing some member of a different group with the same surname? Anne's question about the intermingling of the northern and southern groups seems well founded. I remember a post by Beverly some time back that indicated that John Geiger who was in Florida was not a southern Geiger but from the northern group. (I think that is what she said, she may have to correct me.) This in an area where southern members of the family predominated. If you look at the numbers of names from the PA area to the MD area and then the south, not only Geiger is repeated...a lot of surnames are common to all these areas. So maybe there are ties we have yet to reveal among all these groups. Anne mentioned it was food for thought...I think she might be very correct in her assessment. Susan
