    1. [GEIGER] Earthquake in WA.
    2. rconnell
    3. Some of our folks may not know that Gerry Gieger was working where the earthquake hit. He is o.k. and back to work, although limping from a twisted knee. His office building now has plywood windows and dripping pipes; the one next to it is secured and will be demolished. We are grateful that he survived. Anne C.

    3. Written accounts give Emily GEIGER's father as John GEIGER, but which one is hazy. For all they are worth, my notes are below. Anne C. ========================= Notes on John: Possible son of Gov. Hans Jacob Geiger. Andrea called this John Geiger "Hans Geiger, immigrant from Switzerland and Germany, and a brother to Hermann Geiger", and others say "Hans, called John; youngest brother of Hermann". On the church record of children that Herman's father brought from Switzerland on September, 1736, the only sons are Herman, Hans Heinrich (Henry) and Hans Jacob. John could have been born in South Carolina and be old enough to be father of Emily, but he would be at least twelve years younger than his nearest sib. Andrea said John Geiger married a sister of Ann Murff and that they had only one child, Emily Geiger, b. 1762/63, d. 1780/90. She was the famous heroine of the Rev. War. Her father was called "sickly" at the time of her exploit. Emily Geiger married Captain John Threewits ("Threv-its") and died of "childbed fever." Their daughter, Elizabeth Juliet Threewits, died as a child. The husband remarried. ========================= Notes on Emily: Emily Geiger was the famous heroine of the Rev. War in 1781. Andrea says she was the daughter of John Geiger and Emily Murff. According to depositions in Percy Geiger book, she later married Capt. John Threewits ("Threv-its") and died in childbirth. Their daughter Elizabeth died young. ========================= Notes on John Threewits: Captain Threewits (earlier Threewitz; Thurwitz - pronounced "Threv-its") married second, to Eleanor Fitzpatrick and had one child, Llewelyn Threewits. He married third, Catherine Daniel and had Eleanor Fitzpatrick Threewits (b. 1810, m. Dr. Marsh); John Llewelyn Threewits (b. 5 Jul 1811, d. 17 Oct 1834); and Elizabeth Juliet Threewits (b. 5 Mar 1812, d. 14 Jul 1898, m. Dr. John Oliphant Nicholson, ch: John Threewits Nicholson). ========================= ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2001 7:52 AM Subject: [GEIGER] William Geiger...Emily Geiger > > I also noticed three different fathers for the famous Emily Geiger > (William, John, and Abram, and two different husbands (Llewellyn Threewits > and J.L. 1. [GEIGER] William Geiger...Emily Geiger
    2. nn, thanks for the reply. I actually had thought of the archives myself and gathered some info on Abraham that way (great minds ...) Actually, I believe is was information you had posted some time ago. William Geiger was executor of the will of a Henry Gallman of Saxe Gotha, dated 1776. I looked in the archives for him also, but only found references to Williams who would have been born later than this one, assuming this William was at least 21 to be an executor? I don't know the rules back then for being an executor. Anyway, maybe "William" was a middle name of one of the Geigers we do know about. I also noticed three different fathers for the famous Emily Geiger (William, John, and Abram, and two different husbands (Llewellyn Threewits and J.L. Reid) .....does anyone know the true story here?? Regards, Jan

    1. [GEIGER] RootsWeb Temporary Downtime
    2. An announcement appeared in the RootsWeb Review this week and has been posted in various other places, but just in case anyone missed it I'm copying it here. We expect to be back up and running in about 24 hours. The downtime will effect all of RootsWeb including mailing lists, GenConnect boards, and all Web pages. Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. In the meantime, please take time to visit RootsWeb.com's sister sites -- Ancestry.com and FamilyHistory.com -- where you will find additional tools such as message boards, communities, and databases to help you in the search for your ancestors. Thank you for your patience. --The RootsWeb Staff

    3. I have a couple of questions for our Swiss and German friends on the List: Have you ever heard of the female name "Wybehrt" ? Is the name still in use? Is there a pet name used with it (like Molly for Mary)? Our Wybehrt GYGER of South Carolina was born in 1718 in SWT. Evangelische church records establish her as female. And I've been asked if the Swiss name HABLÜZEL could possibly translate to something like GOLLMAN/GALLMAN in America? I don't think so, but want to ask the experts. Anne C.

    3. Jan, I'm so far behind I don't know if I answered this. I agree they kept poor records, but I guess it wasn't their fault - they had to beg and plead for schools and a minister, so it wasn't easy. I'd like to ask someone in SWT about that name Wybehrt - I've not seen it anywhere else in either country, but that's how my church records show it - and as female. A search in the GEIGER archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/GEIGER-L/ would bring you a lot on Abraham GYGER or GEIGER, Hs. Jacob's younger brother who came to SC with him. He and wife Cathrina Schellig brought their four surviving children, Hs. Jacob, Johannes, Elsbetha and Hs. Ulrich, my ancestor - who later married and moved to GA. No William. Hs. Jacob (b. 1679) and Abraham (b. 1687) were the only surviving brothers - two previous Abrahams and two Hs. Ulrichs had died in SWT. Their four sisters all probably died in SWT (two, for sure). 1. [GEIGER] Jacob S. Geiger
    2. Mary Phillips, Here is what I have on Jacob S. Geiger. He was born March 25, 1824 in Jasper County, Georgia. He died February 2, 1896 in Geneva, Seminole County, Florida. His parents were Harmon Horlbeck Geiger(1797-1868) and Rube Lavinia Kaigler Geiger (1800-1852) who lived in Shadydale, Jasper County, Georgia. Jacob S. Geiger's siblings were as listed in Faye Walenceus' posting: Ann, James M., Randall Capers, Louisa Elizabeth, and Marjulia. He had a half sister named Celeste. Jacob S. Geiger is listed in the 1860 Newton County, Georgia census as a 36 year old teacher, with wife, Eliza P., 30 years old, and children Henry H., 11, Julia, 8, John, 6, William F., 4, and George P., 4/12. He lived next door to W. W. Geiger, a 28 year old teacher who I believe to be his first cousin, Washington Geiger. There is also J. J. (John Jacob) Geiger, a 59 year old farmer who lived nearby in the 1860 Newton County census. This is Jacob S's uncle. Also, James M. Geiger, Jacob S's brother, is shown as a 40 year old farmer in this same census. Newton County borders Jasper County. In 1872 Jacob S. Geiger is listed as an Elder and Local Preacher in the Methodist Espiscopal Church South in Georgia. He must have moved to Florida after 1872. Jacob S. Geiger married Elizabeth P. Binford on September 9, 1847. They had 8 children born in Georgia: Henry H.(born 1849), Julia K. (born 1852), John W. (1854), Chaddeous W. (1854), Allen T.(1856), William F. (1856), George P. (1860), and James L. (1862). Mary, I do think that the Jacob S. Geiger who died in Geneva, Florida was the son of Harmon Horlbeck Geiger and the grandson of John Randolph Geiger. 2. Dear Anne. Oops, you're still alive! I would probably have killed myself if my genie program crashed. Must have been sleeping too soundly to hear your wail. I've backed my database up twice a day for the last 3 days. Ever once in a while, the screen would do a little skip..or a little something that was abnormal. Was so afraid something would happen and I'd lose all that work. When I started entering the Geigers.....I thought I would never stop. Kept thinking what "hell" it would be to have to reenter. I'm thinking: John Randolph Geiger Harmon Hm (might be Harmon Horlbeck) Geiger Jacob S. Geiger (of Geneva) James M. Geiger....Skip's gggrandpa. The John Randolph came from your posting of the Geiger-Murff Bible. Please don't cry too much. Sure hope you can find your file...and it's all there. Have a great weekend..... Love, Mary

    3. Mary, that strange sound you hear coming from WP is my wailing - this a.m., our entire Family Origins program crashed and all of our data bases disappeared. We hope it's just a connection that's been broken somehow and can be retrieved. There goes my weekend! Are you thinking that Harmon H. GEIGER (b. 1824) was a son of Harmon Horlbeck or Hm. (that's what they wrote) GEIGER (b. 1797)? Your theory sounds plausible, but have no way to check my records just now. And of course, I didn't bother to do a backup last night. Herman GEIGER and Elizabeth HABLÜZEL married in SWT, but my source of church records did not name his children. A news article I have says they brought two children. Both his monument and his will name her as his wife. I can't say who Margretha Gartman might be. Enclosed is what I have gathered on the marriages of his children, sifted from various sources, including his Memorial Stone, Percy Geiger, and A. S. Salley. You have caused me to look back at old files and make some changes - but I am still as confused and as unsure of the truth as anyone else about those Murff/Murph sisters.
