For anyone with Civil War ancestors, this is a great place to BEGIN looking for the civil war recs. of your ancestors. This is not all there is, but it's a real good start. If you go to the NARA website (Natl ARchives) and read about it (it's very simple and concise reading), you will learn ALOT about WHAT is available and WHERE it's available. But there is MORE to know, but start here. Also, be sure to look online for your state/county's REGIMENTAL HISTORIES.... more info coming soon. It's late and I have to get to sleep, but wanted to send this little tidbit on! Also, the LDS FHLC has many "Indices" for civil war records - NOT the original records themselves, but the INDICES for them in the FHLC (FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG), so look your state/county up on the fhlc and see what's available for your locality of your ancestor. There are a few diff. ways to look it up in FHLC. I can post that next time, if it's needed. http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/civil_war_records.html
