He was a successful and prosperous farmer, and owned a > good deal of property, his estate being valued at approximately $40,000. He > made it a rule to always produce enough provisions on his farm, and often said > that he had never bought a bushel of corn or a pound of meat since he began > farming over fifty years ago. > His wife preceeded him to the grave a few years ago. They had four daughters, > Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Beach, Mrs. Lawrence, and Mrs. Wiggins. The first three > mentioned survive him. There are fourteen grandchildren and a number of great- > grandchildren. He had been for many years a member of Poplar Spring Baptist > church. The burial took place in the family cemetery near his home last > Wednesday. > > Additional Comments: > The Sandersville Progress, Tuesday, May 21, 1907: > "Watkins Estate To Sell in September > Many inquiries have been made as to the time when the estate of the late Mr. > Wm. Watkins will be sold for distribution among the heirs. Mr. W.R. Beach of > this city who is one of the heirs, requests the Progress to state that it will > be sold some time in September, the exact date when the sale will begin not yet > having been decided. The property in north Sandersville will be divided into > building lots and sold on terms to suit the purchasers, either for cash or > sixty days time. This is valuable for building lots and will no doubt bring > good prices, as it is one of the most elevated points and desirable locations > in the city. The land just beyond the residence of Mr. W. A. McCarty, and also > the land surrounding the house which belongs to the estate, now occupied by Dr. > Davis and family, will be sold. Also the store occupied by Mr. Mark Newman, > besides considerable real estate in the county. The sale will probably occupy > some time, as all of the property can not by disposed of in one day. Due notice > will be given by publication in the county papers when the date of the sale is > fixed, so that all who desire to invest in any of this property may have an > opportunity to make bids thereon. > Mr. Watkins was a very careful business man and left a valuable estate. Under > the terms of his will this estate was to be kept for five years just as he had > left it, after which it was to be sold and divided among the heirs, nearly all > of whom reside in this county. The estate was appraised at about $40,000 at the > time of his death, but is now worth considerably more, both city and country > property having enhanced a good deal in value. > > This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ > > File size: 3.3 Kb > > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
