A few of you like Sylvia may be very familiar with the Mackey and Etheridge lines and might be able to identify links in that family to two other Mackey women from that area described below: Charity Mackey -- said to be the mother of Benjamin Mitchell's first child Charity Mitchell Ross Hall. This daughter is referred to in Benjamins Mitchell's will as his "reputed" child and is referred to elsewhere as his "woods colt." Tabitha Mackey -- married George Crumbley (son of Anthony Crumbley ) of Washington Co.. Some have claimed her birth to be in VA in 1790, and I've wondered if she or the Charity Mackey above could be other daughters or close kin of William Mackey (father of Hopie Mackey), Creek trader, who brought his children to the area that became Wilkinson Co. There are several Mackey tales or legends with different information, and I'm interested in possible early linkages, some apparently Creek, among the Mackeys, Crumbleys and Mitchells. These families seem to have been settlers and traders in the land along and near the Oconee River by the 1770s and 1780s. There's obviously a lot of information later (after 1805) on the these families, but it's difficult working back and getting much information on the first John Crumbley (b. ~ 1775) in Wilkinson Co. and others who arrived very early in the area. Thanks. --- Steve
