May I second the vote for the Salvation Army as well? My husband has been on the board and we are most impressed with their dedication and getting the work done. We in Houston have seen our population expand by the thousands EACH DAY this past week. The utter despair in the eyes of the evacuees as they settle into the many shelters and receive water, hot meals, clean clothing, shoes, air conditioning, and medical care is simply heartbreaking. Along with the well-publicized evacuations of the Super Dome and Convention Center, we have many victims who were able to flee NOLA in time, thinking they would be able to return in a few days and pick up the strands of their lives. Instead their lives are shattered again when they see the televised reports of what was once their neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and religious facilities. With no homes, jobs, and dwindling money (if any money), how will they survive? Tallowood Baptist, my home church, is hosting 30 families in our "North Campus", a strip center we purchased several years ago fronting I-10 on the west side of Houston. Our neighboring churches, synagoges and mosques are helping in Katrina's victims in similar fashion. Mom and I made a quick trip to a local King Dollar (all items are $1.00) to pick up personal care items and small toys, games, coloring books, crayons, etc. for the shelters. We found many other Houstonians filling their baskets to the brim to assist. At Costco (a large warehouse-type store) the scene was much the same but included many pickup trucks, vans and trailers with drivers willing to take donations down to the chaos of the Astrodome. We counted 12 cases (35 liter bottles/case) of water in one trailer! The needs of the evacuees here and throughout the Gulf Coast Region are great and will continue over the next several months. In addition to what you are doing now, please consider giving money to the various Red Cross organizations: American Red Cross - www.redcross.org British Red Cross - www.redcross.org.uk Canadian Red Cross - www.redcross.ca Australian Red Cross - www.redcross.au International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies - www.ifrc.org On a genealogical note: There is no news yet regarding the status of the libraries which house genealogical materials in the area. Many of these precious records may have been the only copies extant and are now lost to us forever. Few of us have not experienced the frustration of trying to get certain records only to find the courthouse had burned and the records were lost so... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make copies of ALL your records TODAY! Scan your photos, marriage & death certificates, military papers, school records, deeds, etc. and burn them onto multiple CD's with a rich text file (.rtf) that lists the documents and where the originals were located. If you can afford to also send certified copies with the disks that would be greatly appreciated. If not, even regular photocopies of your documents will help. Then send the copies to various genealogical repositories and family members AROUND THE COUNTRY and ask that they file your information under the pertinent state's family files. It wouldn't hurt to send photocopies of your driver's license, social security card, insurance policies, medical records, etc. to a trusted family member who lives out-of-town also. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Katrina Relief Effort from Middle Ga. Date: Fri, 2 Sep 2005 01:08:20 EDT From: GiGiFarmer@aol.com Dear Ones: The devastation and loss that we have all watched on television over the past few days as a result of Katrina is heartbreaking..not only to those actually experiencing it but to those of us watching as well....I feel compelled to act..to help...consequently I have launched a campaign to help those in need who reside in Gulfport, MS. I am in contact with a special friend there who has put me in touch with her Pastor, Ray Stokes at Trinity United Methodist Church. His cry and plea is for immediate help...they are desperate.. this is an opportunity for you to really impact directly the lives of the people in this community. Please go to the website: _helpfromtheheartofgeorgia.com_ that is */HELP FROM THE HEART OF GEORGIA.com/*.to decide how you would like to participate..We have a commitment to have a tractor trailer truck parked in the Gray United Methodist Church parking lot hopefully by Monday...but the church is accepting donations now..Pastor John Haney and I are working to fill this trailer as quickly as possible so that it can get on the road. They need the supplies...or the donations which ever is easiest for you to do. */Help from the Heart of Georgia /*is a two phase plan...immediate need relief and building supplies for repairing some homes that are damaged but will need work before families can move back in...please try to help us in both phases...phase II will be most likely 3 months down the road.. your prayers and thought are needed and appreciated..please pray for a successful campaign to help those in need. Please forward this email to everyone in your address book and ask them to do the same..the wider the circle the bigger the splash!! In the August 25, 2005 issue of the Wilkinson County News in Irwinton, Georgia there is an article which states: "On Saturday, September 24, a Confederate Marker will be dedicated to Samuel Boykin Collins in Black Springs Church Cemetery. An effort is being made to contact as many descendants as possible. Samuel Collins was married to Elmira Antoinette Babb in 1866 and they were parents of the following children: Addie Lee Collins, married John Joseph Carr; Mary Annie Collins, married Levi Blizzard; William Robert Collins, spouse unknown; Minnie Bell Collins married James B. Kennedy; Adelia Estelle Collins, married Winton Arnold; Lillie Beatrice Collins, married Albert Arnold. If you are connected or interested in this family, please contact Katherine C. Bray at (478) 452-2864." -
Don't forget to check the Wilkinson County AHGP website http://www.georgiagenealogy.org/wilkinson/ for the latest additions. They include 13 photos, will of Richard Whitaker, 1880 U.S. Federal Mortality Schedule, Thompson home place info, Daniel Aides family, information on Uncle Jack Stevens and Ebenezer Cemetery inscriptions. I've also updated the Cemetery Pages and there are over 11,000 burials. Thanks Harold, Mark, Ranny, Earl and Algernon for your contributions this month. Eileen, Thanks so much for the information. Made a connection I had been looking for. Suzanne
I received an email on another list this morning. The collection right now has 3580 collections. copied from the site: "Notice: As of Monday, August 22, 2005, there are still many items in this collection that have not been fully cataloged. About the collection This collection has been established to provide genealogical researchers throughout the world with access to a rich repository of histories created by families to record and celebrate the lives of their ancestors. The repository is hosted by the libraries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith, the founder of this Church said, "The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our dead." The intent of this archive is to help people everywhere identify ancestors and learn from their legacy. Hi! I am also looking for a sale in Wilkerson County, GA, but the land records were burned in a fire. I understand that they had 2 or 3 different Court House fires that destroyed the records and I was hoping to find some mention of the sale of the land in a newspaper article but have not found anything as yet.
