*HI ALL: Is anyone aware of the above-referenced family lines? They are related to my Stembridge line, inlaws, and I'd LOVE to find someone else who is from or knows of this line... at least more than I do! My grandfather was BENJAMIN "FRANK"lin STEMBRIDGE b. 1892 Glynn Co.GA, but res. Crawfd Co. GA and then into Bibb Co.GA. His parents were JOSEPH B. STEMBRIDGE & SARAH 'AMELIA' Patterson Stembridge. On the 1900 Bibb Co. census, my gr'father "Frank", 8 yrs old, and all his younger sibs, all live not with their parents (no where to be found), but in the household of their older sister, ANNIE VERNELIA STEMBRIDGE who was then mar. to FRANK BREEDLOVE. They had a young daughter, LAURA, and all these younger siblings of Annie's living in their household. I imagine their mother prob died, and perhaps their father, or perhaps he took off, dont know)... Somehow, when he was 17, and his parents are no where to be found on census', etc., FRANK is then shown living in the household (in Enigma, Berrien Co.) with JOHN BENTON G UNN & his wife MARTHA BUSSEY GUNN. He is listed as "dopted son", I assume meaning 'adopted son'. I have NO IDEA ON EARTH how he came to live with them at that young age, and probably younger... I wish I knew! SEvl. yrs. later, Frank ends up marrying the GRANDDAUGHTER OF JOHN BENTON GUNN & MARTHA, namely, Onie Jones, and Frank and Onie were my grandparents. (John & Mattie Gunn had daughter, MINNIE EUGENIA GUNN, she mar. C.I. JONES of charlton Co., and they are the parents of Onie JOnes.) OK, back to the story: So......... fast forward a bit.......... 1910 Census (Shelby Co. TN) shows FRANK & ANNIE BREEDLOVE'S DAUGHTER, LAURA, marr. to IRWIN OLIVER. Irwin is 30, Laura is "19" (wow, bit of an age difference!) ... but then I see as THEIR 'Daughter" (could it be???), a girl named Eugenia, age "7" --- if she is Laura's actual daughter, that would have made Laura a mother at age 12 ! I know they marr. young in those days, but that seems a bit far-fetched. Of course, Laura could be STEPmother I suppose, and father could be the actual Father of Eugenia. Well, enuf on this... just thought I'd post it and see if anyone knows anything about them. Thanks, *Tina*
HI ALL: STATUS UPDATE on genealogical email lists I created that may be of interest to you. All the YAHOOGROUPS lists are the ones I created, and this info is being sent to some others in case there may be interest in these lists. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about any of these lists (or join if you see something that pertains to you). Majority of the yahoogroups email lists are for specific family lines, altho a few are generic to that Surname and open to all. Ask if any questions. (You can also go to the yahoogroups.com website to read Description of each.) Most on each Surname list are from the same family line, just different branches. ***** I will show LIST NAME, # of listmembers, # of posts, date list originated. She married William Peter Johns, son of Zephaniah Johns, they applied for land patents in Bradley County AR in 1859 and 1860, had 10 children and both died there. Wilkinson County GaArchives News.....Tommy McCook Gardener of the Year (1989) 1989 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Joy McCook joymccook@yahoo.com January 7, 2006, 10:25 pm Local Paper 1989 TOMMY MCCOOK GARDENER OF THE YEAR This summer people from across Wilkinson County called the County Extension OFfice to nominate their gardening friends for the gardener of the year award. The award is given by the County Extension Office in recognition of superior vegetable gardening skill. Nominees for this year's contest included: Earl K. Thompson, Tommy McCook, Julian Hatcher, Bill Akins, Carl Mixon, Billy and Laverne Griffin, Marvin Merritt and Beulah Dennard. Many of these gardeners continued working through the season unaware that their friends and neighbors has "entered" them in the competition. Based upon the number of nominations received a group of finalists were selected. Mr. Bill Akins of Orwinton proved to be Wilkinson County's most widely recognized gardener this year by receiving the most nominations for the award. The other finalists were: Tommy McCook, Julian Hatcher, and Billy Griffin. The Judges for this year's contest: Keith Lassiter, Baldwin County Extension Service Director and Greg Sheppard, Wilkinson County Extension Agent, visited each finalist's garden in order to make the final decision. After comparing scoreboards, Mr. Tommy McCook of Gordon was announced as the 1989 Wilkinson County Gardener of the Year. Mr. McCook who has gardened in the same spot for some 40 years grows a wide variety of vegetables. "We filled five freezers this year," said Mr. McCook. In addition to his own use Mr. McCook shares vegetables with many friends and neighbors and occasionally sells some of his excess production. Tommy follows a good disease and insect control program by rotating planting sites, destroying all crop residue and carefully monitoringinsect numbers and spraying as needed. Problem areas in the garden have been treated with Capam Soil Fumigant or an in furrow chemical treatment. Mr. McCook has one of the most weed-free gardens around and once jokingly said he would like to "rent some weeds" since he didn't have any left in his garden. McCook makes use of a number of innovative gardening techniques including: raised beds, a sophisticated irrigation and drainage system and a number of experimental plantings. "If you have an idea about how to do something better try it out even if other people say it won't work. That's how you learn to garden," says McCook. As the 1989 Award Winner Mr. McCook received a handsome engraved plaque and a $25 gift certificate compliments of Joe Etheridge of Wilco Feed and Seed. Congratulations to all our 1989 nominees and to Tommy McCook, the Wilkinson County Gardener of the Year. I live in Augusta, GA and if he turns out to be one of ours, I'm going to be very disappointed that I didn't get an opportunity to talk with him. Diane Thompson Dixon
Wow, I bet this is a branch of our Keen(e)'s! I think in time a call or letter to these folks would be in order .... the name Tullie (and Wm.) is too much of a 'coincidence' to ignore. Yes, too bad we didnt know about him/them sooner. And it appears he lived in CA at one time too, where I live! We should give some serious thought as to Finding Keen(e)'s in the GA area, dont you think? Besides doing Genealogy, I also do Searches for living people (I am what's called an Adoption Search Consultant, helping adult Adoptees & Birthparents to find one another and reunite, if they both so desire). I also help people look for and find OTHER living kin, so if you tell me an AREA of GA or wherever, that we'd want to know of all Keen's in that particular area, I will get some contact info on them (incl. names, ph.#'s) ... let me know what you think! Hi All & Happy New Year! I have a friend on another list (who is ALWAYS HELPING OTHERS ON THE LIST), and he has a question he needs help with... wonder if any one might have a clue: I have someone in a 1850 census. A daughter age 18. >> Under occupation is says "Lady". >> Does anyone have any idea what that means? (I dont know what part of the >> country this census was for, or if that would be a clue) *ANY REPLIES WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!! *Tina*
Hi, Tina! I've been hitting my head against at least one brick wall, since I was a senior in high school (1980) when a teacher gave us an assignment to produce a family tree. I had always LOVED old family stories, and my maternal grandfather was THE best storyteller; however, by this time I only had one grandparent alive - my maternal grandmother - whose families all settled in Wilkinson County, Georgia before descendants drifted elsewhere (Smith, Kennington, Ryle, Lewis, Eth(e)ridge, Branan, and either Pearson or Kingery - depending upon Lucinda Etheridge's maiden name). I was very lucky my grandmother knew a lot about her own family as well as my grandfather's. I love meeting and corresponding with long-lost cousins! Happy New Year (y'all) from Dodge County, Georgia! (My response is below) ... *Tina* My genealogical interests and pursuits began when I was about 25, which was 32 yrs ago! Briefly, I was working in the UCSB Library, and taking a break one day I was walking around looking at the many books, some of which were old and interesting looking. As I looked into one, it had an old photo of a man named WILLIAM KEEN, and Keene being my maiden name, it piqued my interest, and I wondered, "Could he be an ancestor of mine???" (I didnt know any farther back at that time on my Keene line than my own father, so I had no clue) --- That began my interest, and of course it grew and grew! I did find that I had an ancestor born 1796 named WILLIAM KEEN, but it was not the one in the book. By the time I learned of my WM. KEEN, I had long forgotten the book. Living in Sta Barbara was helpful because they have an excellent city library that houses many excellent genealogy books/resources! Also, at that time, someone recommended I check with the LDS Church/what is now the FHC of course, but not at that time, 27 yrs ago. So my interest grew, and ancestors were found and more interest, etc etc, you know how that cycle goes! :) I have now taught many classes in it, published a book & a surname publication, and love helping others with theirs, and of course I still enjoy doing my own... but the big breakthroughs are fewer and farther between! But I still have *hope* ! * HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL, AND WISHING YOU MANY BREAKTHROUGHS & CRUMBLING BRICKWALLS in '06! * ** So, how about you????? ** *Tina/CA* ==== GAWILKIN Mailing List ==== Check out this great GA RESOURCES PAGE: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/georgia.html

But I still have *hope* ! * HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL, AND WISHING YOU MANY BREAKTHROUGHS & CRUMBLING BRICKWALLS in '06! * ** So, how about you????? ** *Tina/CA*
Something was wrong with my email server. I did not receive any messages from Dec 23-27th. The server did not reject the emails either. If you posted anything to the list during that time would you please resend it to me. Or where can I go to see all the posts for that time period? Thank you for your time. betty in ga
I didnt post anything to the list during that time, it was a very busy time of year, possibly no one did. If anyone posted "to you" on the list, they prob. would have contacted you if they hadnt heard from you. If I find anything was posted, I'll repost or send to you. Going through my Bailey family tree to update it, I re-read my Second Great-Grandfather Minza Leonard Bailey's obituary: Eastman Newspaper dated March 16, 1944: M L Bailey, 77, resident of Eastman many years ago, died at his home in Valdosta March 13th following a three-months illness. He was a native of Wilkinson County. He resided in Miami, Fla. 18 years where he was a produce dealer. Funeral services were conducted at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church March 14 by Rev R G P McKinnonw. Songs were sung by J W Dunn, H H Peacock and Mr and Mrs J E Conley. Casket bearers were Robert L Pipkin, P D Fordham, Edgar Fordham, J M Hamlin, W J Dunlay and S F Johnson. Burial was in Bowers Cemetery. Surviving are: daughers, Mrs O W Middleton, **Mrs Ernest C Griner, Mrs I D Jones, Mrs Walter Jump, Mrs Eloise Tharpe; six sons, M L Bailey, Jr., Gratin Bailey, Alton, Renau, Wendell and Herbert Bailey; one brother E E Bailey of Dodge County. Does anyone know who E E Bailey is? This Unlce was never in any census records unlike Grandfather William Henry Harrison & Grandmother Nancy Mildred LORD Bailey's five other children, yet Grandfather William mentions six children in his CSA Pension Application (which I wish children were listed like those filed in 'Bama..lol). Known brothers of Grandfather Minza, one of Grandparents William & Nancy's sons, are: William Hugh & the mysterious James Franklin, sisters were Cordellia & Anna 'Annie' L. Bailey. Also, do pictures of any of these Bailey family members exist & obituaries? Ray, Minza's grandson, is reaching 88 & I would love for my grandfather to see some family pictures before he passes. I dont know if others have seen this site or not, but I went to it looking for something else, and found alot of my family surnames on it, going WAY BACK, so anyone with southern (and other?) lines, might want to take a moment to check out this surname website. I think it said there were over 30,000 names listed. WatkinsRev listmembers, there are ALOT of 1600s-early 1700s Watkins in VA shown on these pages, we might want to check out! WYNN/POYTHRESS folks, they're there too! And many many more! *Tina* SEE BELOW: http://members.fortunecity.com/dartbob/dat0.htm#20

Ellouise, I'm descended from William Wynn & Susan Henson on my maternal grandfather's side. Ernest Ferrell Thompson, my grandfather, son of William Columbus Thompson, son of Jesse P. Thompson, son of James Russell Thompson and Martha Wynn, daughter of William Wynn & Susan Henson. My maternal grandmother was the granddaughter of Letha Stevens Thigpen Wynn, by her Thigpen husband. Alice Allene Thigpen, daughter of Calvin Eason Thigpen, son of Redding G. Thigpen and Letha Stevens. Letha Stevens had at least 4 children by Redding G. Thigpen, and 2 others by William Wynn. I've been unable to find her date of death or where she's buried. My grandmother thought she should have been buried at Salem, but if she was, there doesn't seem to be a marker.
