Hi Everyone, The following passport is found in Special Publication of the National Genealogical Society No. 28, _Passports Issued by Governors of Georgia, 1785 to 1809_ and _Passports Issued by Governors of Georgia, 1810 to 1820_, by Mary G. Bryan, with _Index of Persons Receiving Passports, 1785 to 1820_, by Wm. H. Dumont. This set was published in Arlington, VA, 1964. [Page number is from the original record, and not the cited publication.] Page 350--Monday 4th May 1812 On application ORDERED That passports be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Indian Nations to the Western Country, viz, One for MR. ZADCOCK SIMMONS with his son JOHN SIMMONS and nine negroes from Anson County North Carolina, and one for Messrs. JETT THOMAS of Baldwin, and ALEXANDER THOMAS of Ogelthorpe, the former with sixteen negroes--and also GEORGE W. RODGERS--Which were presented and signed. Zadock SIMMONS and his son, John, are my ancestors; they used this passport to migrate to Wilkinson County, GA, and lived there for the remainder of their lives. Of course, I welcome response! :-) Kind regards, Jennifer Jacksonville, FL jennifer@leading.net Proud RootsWeb Sponsor+ Join us at GATHOMAS-L, ABBOTT-L, STANALAND-L
Hi Tina & All, The Georgia passport books have been an excellent resource for me. I bought them through special order at my local bookstore. They don't have ISDNs printed in them; I used author's name in the bookseller's database. I don't know if the FHC would have them or not (the one closest to me is only open a few hours a week while I'm either at work or at school). I've recommended to others that they might try the National Genealogical Society since it's one of their special publications, but no one has written back to tell me if they were successful. I ran across the info I posted while doing lookups for some of the list members at GATHOMAS-L, and I forwarded it because Wilkinson Co. was noted in the record. I'll be glad to do lookups for anyone here. Please be sure to specify which resource you're asking for in the subject line of your post 'cuz I have "too many irons in the fire" at the moment and might check the wrong book for you <grin> (the word "passport" will work fine). Tina's the list manager, and I'm not sure of her policy on this, but on the lists I manage I encourage public posting of lookup results so that the info is saved into the RootsWeb mailing list archives. As I see it, even an "I'm sorry, Joe SMITH isn't in the book" might save someone a wasted trip to the library ... today or two years from now. *HI JENNIFER &ALL: Yes, thanks so much for the offer for Look Ups, and please feel free to post your Requests and Responses here, so that others may benefit from the information. Jennifer, DO YOU KNOW A FAIRLY SIMPLE WAY TO ACCESS THE 'ARCHIVES' for the rootsweb mail.lists???? I spent some time on this the other day, and thought I came up with a way .... wrote it out somewhere.... maybe I'll find it someday... But rootsweb ARCHIVES are not easy things to search!! (Nothing as easy as onelist.com Archives!!!) Your advice on this will be appreciated..... thanks much! TINA/CA List Mgr.

Since the original posting I've discovered Jospeh Howell Toler and Caroline Wilson Toler of Wilkinson Co. had 13, perhaps 14, children. A family Bible lists Caroline's maiden name as "Wilson," although Wilkes was widely disseminated by the Maddox books. Caroline's 91-year-old granddaughter says it was "Wilson" as well, so we're all looking for further confirmation of either..

Hi Margaret, I did a lookup for someone else earlier today and noticed your Jesse WILSON in the process. So here's the little bit I found: >From _Passports Issued by Governors of Georgia, 1785-1820_, by Mary G. Bryan (this is Special Publication No. 28 from the National Genealogical Society, Arlington, VA, 1964): [page number is from the records, not from Ms. Bryan's publication] === Page 87--Saturday 3d March 1810 On application ORDERED That passports be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Creek Nation of Indians, to wit--one for WILLIAM HAWTHORN, with his wife and two children and five orphan children--one for JESSE WILLSON with his wife and five children--one for HENRY NICHOLS with his wife and three children, all from the County of Effingham in the State--and one for JAMES FREEMAN from Marion District South Carolina, with his wife, four children, two grand children and a neighbor's child--which were presented and signed === Some things to note: -- These pamphlets have index entries for WILSONs and WILLSONs interchanged; from my own WILSON line, I can say that the spelling often varied in public records (or private ones for that matter <grin>). -- The wording of the record may or may not indicate that the Hawthorne, Willson and Nichols families were travelling together. Passports for family groups often indicated that the families noted were moving from one vicinity to the next (and not just travelling with the intention of returning to the place of origin). Perhaps this passport indicates when Jesse moved his family from Effingham to Wilkinson ... just a thought. Some of my own Wilkinson ancestors, Zadock SIMMONS and his son John, had a passport issued in 1812 for their relocation from Anson Co., NC to Wilkinson Co., GA where they settled for decades. -- There were no passports for the other names you listed (didn't want you to think I didn't check them). James, Michael, Nathan and Vinson MIXON, and Jesse, John and Kinchen WEBB are included in the index. Gimme a holler if you'd like their info. Hope this helps, Jennifer >Date: Sat, 15 May 1999 20:02:38 EDT >From: DataProf@aol.com >Subject: [GAWILKIN-L] Mixon, Webb, Wilson > >Does anyone have information on Jesse and Elizabeth Mixon, Wentworth and >Henry Webb or Jesse Wilson, all living in late 1700s-early 1800s, Wilkinson >and Effingham? *HI ALL: I still have many copies of the HOLLYMAN FAMILY book, which was first pub. in 1952 by a distant cousin, George A. Holleman. I updated and had it reprinted in 1989. It is 375 pages long, fully indexed, hard cover, library bound, a nice book to have if you are a "Hollyman" (all sp.) descendant. I had 1500 copies of the book printed in '89, I sell them on a fairly regular basis, and still have many left. The genealogy begins with CHRISTOPHER HOLLYMAN who d. Isle of Wight Co.VA 1691 (and wife Mary (Gray?), with their several sons, and two daughters (both marr. Atkinsons), then the book continues from there, down to and including my children's generation on many lines. The orig. book done by George Holleman ended with my grandmother's generation; in the updated book, I used the entire, complete FIRST BOOK as the first part of the book, and added the Addendum, including my line and many others , updated down to 1989. Those of us who submitted current info, or corrections, additions, etc., have our names and addresses in the book, so if you see someone's name that appears to be related or have info on your kin, you can contact them. There are literally thousands of names in the book, and all, even non-Hollimans, are indexed. My line went from VA to NC to GA, but others went all over the U.S. Book also has many Wills, Census recs. of Hollimans (all sp.), 1790 Census of Hollimans, Black Hollimans, connected and non-connected to the family line. If someone is a Holliman, this is a book to have. It is also in the LDS FHL in SALT LAKE CITY, and can be ordered on film at any FHC anywhere. I do not mind anyone posting any info from the book.....I just want the info to be available to all who may want it. The price is very reasonable, will discuss if you email me. Just want to make sure any Holliman descendants know it's available, dont want to make a sales pitch here on the list. This book was a tremendous asset to me in my research years ago. *HI ALL: Just a reminder.....if you order a book or info on FICHE from your local FHC (Family History Cntr of the LDS Church in your area), the fiche will come to your local FHC, and will STAY THERE INDEFINITELY (forever basically) -- for you and others to use at your convenience. The cost for microfiche is only 15 cents per sheet! Very very inexpensive!!! So, if you want to order WILKINSON CO.GA HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS by Joseph T. Maddox, when it comes, it will be the ENTIRE BOOK on fiche (10-20 sheets of fiche), and it will be there for good! This book has an excellent index at the back. And of course when you 'view' the fiche on the film/fiche 'viewer', you can, if you want, just push a button and it will take a picture of the page you are on. So you can make copies of pages, and you can just copy stuff, if it's not too much. Most copies cost, depending on the particular FHC, 25-35 cents per page. These special film/fiche copies are not cheap to buy, that's why copies are so expensive. Have fun! *TINA/CA* List Mgr. *********************************
