visit my website: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lake/8044 Hello All! I had a wonderful time in Wilkinson Co. I also visited bibb, Jones, and twiggs also. Found a lot of tidbits also that I would like to share with you. I am not responsible for any errors in the information. Please as always, remember to verify it yourself. There will probably be more than one email. Watch the subject line for each section. Please let me know if this is helpful. If not I will not take the time to do it. Thanks. These are abstracts from a Book "Early Settlers Wilkinson County" . I copied the pages with the names I was searching, but as You know, we end up with extra stuff as well. I copied this info at the Washington Library in Macon (bibb co.) Georgia. Enjoy! Pat There are tidbits of LEE, LAWSON, LESLIE, SPEARS, VAN LANDINGHAM, VAUGHN, WALTERS in the pages I copied also. TOO LENGTHY!!!! To type ..let me know if any of these names are of concern at this time to anyone. If so I will type the ones requested. I also have the letters "E" and "V" for the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 census for Wilkinson County. Does anyone want that info posted? Also, is anyone researching the THARPE family? If she was actually the daughter of Benjamin III, then Zenus' second wife Nancy Dominy would have been Zenus' niece. Neither is there any data to substantiate John Dominy had a daughter named Dionne. A story handed down tells that when Lucinda Rigby Fordham, Zenus' fist wife was on her death bed with terminal cancer, Nancy Dominy acted as maid and nurse. Again Senator Arthur E. Cochran, a long-time proponent for betterment in the field of learning, had advanced his ideas still further. The original thought was to create a centrally located institution for teacher training. The program did not work out as planned and in 1874, the name of the school was changed to Talmadge Institute honoring Samuel Talmadge, an educator. >From 1874 until the building was razed in 1923, the institute was a 11-grade school. As the number of students gradually increased following World War One, modifications were continually being made inside the building in an effort to isolate the various classes. Such changes not only distracted pupils because of the continuous movement in conducting classes on the two floors, but it was a fire trap also. The new partitions partially blocked escape routes. The physical building was a simple square two-story frame structure and 75 years of use had rendered it unfit for continued occupancy.

I' sure we have all been thwarted in our research by : I'm sorry but those records were destroyed in the courthouse fire in ----. Earlier this year my wife and I went to Wilkinson and a few other counties. We entered the Johnson County Courthouse (beautifully renovated) and noticed a large sign in the foyer "Thank you for not Smoking". We went to the Probate Court office right off the foyer and found no one home. Then noticed smoke coming from the vault. Horrified I went closer to see if I should to call the fire department. Found the Probate Judge and her secretary puffing away around the judges desk which took up 80% of the vault. The ashtrays (several) were full and she tried to hide the cigarette she had in her hand. I didn't say anything at the time as she has been around since before Methusalah (?). Couldn't wait to get out of the courthouse and the county. I called the Governor and the State Insurance Commissioner's office to report the problem and try to get it stopped. John Oxendines office has since stated they visited the Judge's office (verified the report) and notified her that smoking in a records room is illegal. She claimed she wasn't aware of that law. If any of you happen to go by Johnson County would love to know if she's still smoking in the records vault. Jack Wynn jwynn@mindspring.com Happy Hunting!!

His site is at: www.duesouth.net/~bkingery/ David Watkins has a good WATKINS website (my Watkins line is in Wilkinson and Wash.Co.GA, so I'm putting this website in here as it may contain some of our lines): www.inet.au/~davwat/wfhs/index.html And of course JEFF's great WILKINSON CO. website .... this is a must! http://hometown.aol.com/johnstien/Wilkinso/gawilkin.html *PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU KNOW OF OTHER GOOD WILKINSON CO. SITES, or sites that contain info on some WILKINSON CO. ANCESTORS! * *TINA/CA* List Mgr.

*HI ALL: (Duplicate Post for New Members!) As promised, here are some of the WLKNSN CO. resources you can order from SLC, thru your local FHC. I mostly picked out microFICHE because they are so inexpensive...ALL FICHE #'s begin with the number "6". All FILMS start with other numbers, so that's how you will know if it's a Film or Fiche. Again, Fiche cost only 15 cents per sheet/fiche -- and most books, for instance, can fit on only 3-5 fiche/sheets. Once at y our local FHC, they stay there for good ("indefinitely"). Films cost $3.75 to order, take a week or to to get there, and stay there for you and others to view, for 5 weeks (BUT IF you need it there longer, you can renew it and keep it there). This is not the ENTIRE list of what's available thru SLC on WILKINSON CO., but a good start! SLC has TONS of stuff on every state, every county, every subject!! (You can find all this, and much more, on the FHLC - "Family History Library Catalog" at your local FHC). ***** ON FICHE: 1860 Census...6105158 - (2 fiche= 30 cents!) * This would be excellent to order! Wlknsn Co.GA Hist.Collections, by J.T.Maddox...6048838 (9) (also excellent!) GA Cemeteries...6100651 (1) *** ON FILM: Misc.GA Deeds 1835-1865...Film #0262733, Item 3 (Item# is impt. when ordering!) (You can look on the [Description of this film at the FHC, just type in the Film#, and it gives TONS of names of people who are in these deeds, incl. my WM. WYNN] Wills & Cemeteries, 1817-1920...#1036239, Item 1 Marriage Recs., 1821-1941.... Marr. Licenses - 1823-1929...#1749659, Item 3 " " , v.3, A-C 1821-1828, 1865-1903....#1737805 " " v. D-E (that's what it says!) 1904-1941...1737806, Item 1-2 (if confused abt this, you can look at it at the FHC) Early Recs. of Wlknsn co. GA by Harold Heard (Marr. & Probate Recs. from publ. County Histories) #0873814, Item 3 Wlknsn Co.Marr. Recs., 1820-1882, Frances T. Ingmire [This is a book, dont think you can order books anymore...they used to put them on Fiche for us, but pretty sure they don't anymore--ask at FHC if interested, but pretty sure they don't.] Land Lottery, Wilknsn & Baldwin Cos. 1807-1808...#0465063, Item 4 Land Lottery Grants, 1805-1860 (on 7 reels of film)-includes INDEX (yeah!) [This shows "District #s, which you prob. wouldnt know which Dist. your ancestor was in....you'd almost have to look at this at FHC to know which to order...it also goes by YEARS]... The years overlap....so I'd suggest first ordering the DIST. 1-28 INDEX 1807-1828....#0514017 (that will prob. show you which Dist.) Gold & Land Lottery Register 1832...054018 Tombstone Recs: Polar Sprgs Cem, Toombsboro, Myrtle Sprgs, Ebenezer Church Cemeteries, near toombsboro; Raniah & Snow Hill Cems., near Gordon. #0007091, Item 13 Wlknsn Co. Cem.Recs. - Contents contains records of family cem.records of: Gilbert, Jackson, Kinney families - ...#0182825, Item 18-21 ****** ALSO AT MY LOCAL FHC, are the following resources on FICHE that were ordered (mostly by me! They are now at my FHC indefinitely. You can do the same! You can also look at your local FHC and ask to look at the List of all the Fiche they have there on GA): WILKES CO. MARRIAGES, LAND LOTTERY OF GA, 37,000 EARLY GA MARR., INDEX TO GA WILLS, INDEX TO SOME EARLY TX DIGESTS OF GA, CEM. RECS. OF GA, HISTORY OF LAURENS CO.GA, EARLY GA MARR. ROUNDUP, 40,000 EARLY GA MARR., DEATH OF REV WAR SOLD DIED GA, AND THEIR WIDOOWS, WILKES CO. 1860 CENSUS, WASH.CO.GA NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS (THIS IS A GOOD ONE!-on 2 fiche).... You can see there are lots of good things to order from SLC and have at your local FHC. You can't take them home of course, but they are wonderful resources you can have at your fingertips! Good luck! *TINA/CA* List Mgr.
