    3. (posting this to WINN, WILKINSON CO. & GA & WATKINSREV lists) *HI ALL: As you know, my William Wynn was born in 1790 BURKE CO.,GA. He m. Susan HINSON (prob. dtr of Wm. & Martha Hinson). (My Wm. WYNN res. Wilkinson Co. in early/mid 1800s) Believe his parents were possibly WM. WYNNe & ELIZ.ECHOLS --- Could be wrong, but I think there's a chance this family could desc. from the PITTSYLVANIA CO.VA family of Wm.Wynne .... as there are ECHOLS connections and POYTHRESS connections back then, only a couple of generations before my WM. born in Burke Co.,GA, with probable parents of WM. WYNNE & ELIZ.ECHOLS..... *IS ANYONE ELSE researching these families???? Would sure love to connect if you are, and join forces in trying to pursue the correct genealogy here..... **I will be going on VACATION Aug 7-14, and will Unsub for that time period.... But until then, please do email me, and also, even during that time, you could privately Email me and I think my emailbox could handle that..... Thanks! TINA/CA tina@tcsn.net

Deanna FAMILY TREE FINDERS Monday - 19 July 1999 Fraternal Organizations Online I suspect that many of you are like me. When you have a question or are interested in a new locality or record type or period in history, you turn to the Internet to see what is available. More and more the information that we, as genealogists, are in need of is showing up. Recently I answered a reader's question in regards to the fraternal organization known as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In answering the question, I included the URL for the I.O.O.F. Of course, that has prompted some other questions about web sites and information on other fraternal organizations. Before supplying the URLs for some of the many fraternal organizations, let's look first at what they do and whether or not they can be of help to genealogists. Fraternal organizations will not be able to supply you with information on the genealogy of your ancestor. What they will be able to help you with though is a glimpse into your ancestor's involvement in the society. Many of the fraternal organizations that exist are benevolent in purpose. They did much to help each other and their selected charities. When looking into the history of these societies, you will find evidence that many of the secret signs were their way of identifying each other when traveling and in need of aid. Today many of them have insurance to help their members and raise major funds to help various present day charities. However, for the members, their involvement in the organization goes much further. Most of them offer a series of rights or levels of progression. And this information was of course recorded in their organization records. This is the type of information you are likely to discover when contacting them. You will want to keep this in mind as you write to the appropriate lodge or repository. While most of the fraternal organizations have a central, national lodge, the Masons seem only to have their state Grand Lodges. Below are some useful links for some of the still active fraternal organizations. Just as the Masons have no national address to write to, it is not surprising that they also don't have a single web site. Those included below are being done so, as they include useful information. MASONS -- Masonic Service Association of North America (http://www.msana.com/) -- The Grand Lodge F&AM of Ohio (http://www.freemason.com/) -- The Grand Lodges of the United States of America (http://thelonious.mit.edu/Masonry/GLs/) KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS -- Knights of Columbus Web Page (http://www.kofc-supreme-council.org/index.html) KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS -- The Order of Knights of Pythias (http://www.pythias.org/index.html) THE GRANGE -- The Grange Connection (http://www.grange.org/) Rhonda R. 3. *HI ALL: (REPOSTED FOR NEW LIST MEMBERS:) Here are just a few Wilkinson Co. related websites you must check out. Bob Kingery, a distant cousin of mine in SC, has a GREAT website that includes MANY Wilkinson Co. families, including his and mine! (Bob and his wife found out they are cousins through one of these lines!). His site is at: www.duesouth.net/~bkingery/ David Watkins has a good WATKINS website (my Watkins line is in Wilkinson and Wash.Co.GA, so I'm putting this website in here as it may contain some of our lines): www.inet.au/~davwat/wfhs/index.html And of course the great *WILKINSON CO.* website (that Jeff does) .... this is a must! http://hometown.aol.com/johnstien/Wilkinso/gawilkin.html *PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU KNOW OF OTHER GOOD WILKINSON CO. SITES, or sites that contain info on some WILKINSON CO. ANCESTORS! * *TINA/CA* List Mgr.

    1. [GAWILKIN-L] Ford Butler, Wilkinson Co., GA/Revolutionary Soldier

    3. I was looking in the book: Military Certificates of Georgia 1776-1800 on file in the Surveyor General Department, by: Marion R. Hemperley copyright date 1983. I found that Ford Butler was listed as a refugee, according to this book. Does anyone know what this means exactly? I later found (in the Georgia Revolutionary War Soldier's Graves Vol. 2 complied by H. Ross Arnold, Jr. & H. Clifton Burnhan. Laurens -Worth Counties & General Index copyright 1993 Georgia Society Sons of American Revolution) that Ford Butler (listed under Wilkinson Co.) d.1817 served as a private in Captain Wood's Horse Company of Colonel Malmedy's Regiment of the North Carolina Militia and later was in the Georgia Militia under Colonel Elijah Clarke and received bounty land along Rig Shoal Creek in Franklin County. So why would he have been listed as a refugee in the previous book?
