Hi Kris, I will give you the short of John CARTER's will, Laurens Co., SC, April 14, 1798: "John CARTER of Laurens Co., my well beloved wife Rachel [CHAMBERS], my son Wm. CARTER, and son-in-law Wm. McCRAREY/Mccrary...Wm. CARTER & Wm. McCRAREY executors. Witness: Robt. CARTER. John CARTER and Rachel CHAMBERS were married in Frederick Co., VA. about 1750-60? Migrated to SC abt. 1770. John CARTER descends from Quaker CARTERs of Bucks Co., PA, late 1600's; Rachel CHAMBERS family also was of Quaker origin. I thought I had something on a will for Wm. McCRARY, but I found no will info for him in my loose paper or my "Laurens Co., SC, Wills 1784-1840" book. I have lots on Laurens Co., SC, CARTERS. CARTER, BOZEMAN, BENSON, BENTLEY, WEATHERS There are several CARTERs who I believe are mine who migrated from Wilkes/Lincoln Cos., GA. Samuel CARTER may have been one the early flock of Baptist who came with Rev. KING and started Mt. Nebo Church. He was already residing in Wilkinson Co. when he drew land in Wilkinson in the 1807 lottery. Joel CARTER also drew land in Wilkinson 1807, but it appears from the survey that he didn't stake his claim. Richard & Joseph BENSON also won land in the 1807 lottery. Samuel, Abner, John & Joel are in the Insolvent Tax List, Lincoln Co., for 1807, suggesting their move. I believe their land in Wilkinson must have been in a part that later became Twiggs as these CARTERs and their siblings are in the 1818 Twiggs Co. Tax Digest: Samuel, Abner, Stephen, John, Joel. Several are in Cpt. BOZEMAN's District--sister Amy married Etheldred BOZEMAN. John CARTER married Zilpha BENSON, Jan. 1807, in Lincoln Co. Later, in Jones Co., GA, John CARTER's son, Joel Jr. would marry Amelia Ann BENTLEY, and his dau. would marry Samuel BENTLEY in Crawford Co., GA. John's family would move to Crawford Co., GA, abt. 1820, where they followed the Primitive Baptist faith--Samuel BENTLEY was a preacher at Mt. Prim. Bapt. Church there, John CARTER an ordained deacon. I believe my CARTERs descend from the CARTERs of Laurens Co., SC, but I need proof and need to know who the above CARTERs' parents are. John was born 1780, Samuel 1783, Abner 1788, Stephen ?, Amy 1792, Joel ?--may be a brother or the father?--all born SC. Elizabeth 1800, Mary 1802--born GA. So I guess parents would have been born abt. 1760 or before either in SC or VA. I descend from John CARTER. I would like to correspond with anyone who has info on any of the above families, Mt. Nebo Church, etc. Thank you, Cynthia CARTER DYER
Hi Kris. Do you know where your William McCrary is from? I have records from a Wm. McCrary in Laurens Co., SC., late 1700's. Let me know if you would like me to post what I have. I have CARTERs in Wilkinson/Twiggs Cos. 1806 to 1820...they are my brick wall & I believe they are also from Laurens Co., SC, 1790's. *HI ALL: I have rec'd in the mail, from BN.com (Barnes & Noble), the WILKINSON CO. history book by DAVIDSON. It was only $31, which is much cheaper than from the publisher. Now all I have to do is obtain (another) copy (to replace my lost one of 10 yrs ago) of 'WILKINSON CO.HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS', by Joseph T. Maddox. **IF anyone has a copy of this they would be willing to sell, I would be glad to have it! **IF ANYONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE A COPY, pls. email me and let me know that, and I will check into having the book REPRINTED if we have enuf people who would buy it. It would prob. cost, I imagine, at least $30 or so per copy ..... Pls. advise if you are interested in purchasing (and would PREPAY for one if I can find a printer who would do it for a reasonable price....I believe I can. The more we buy, the cheaper each will prob. cost us!) Best to all, TINA/CA tina@tcsn.net He who says 'it cannot be done' should not interrupt he who is doing it. - Chinese Proverb

Is there any place on line where I can see the boundaries of the original counties and how they line up with more recent areas? Was Hawkinsville ever in Wilkinson County? I am new at much of this. I grew up in Georgia but moved away 35 years ago. I'm trying to find out if my ggg grandfather came to the area from Eastern Georgia or from North Carolina. He was born about 1773 in ____. He died in April 1833 in Pulaski County. He was buried at the Rehoboth Church. I think in Hawkinsville. He was the preacher at the local Missionary Baptist Church as was his son. Robert E. Mills was his name. Central Georgia is as almost as hard as Old Rowan County North Carolina. Anyway, now you see why I need a good "Old" map!
I descend from Samuel Montgomery, the son of William and Margaret Montgomery of Wilkinson County and Vashti Branan, the daughter of James and Sarah Branan. I don't think they ever threw away a paper and I've been putting some on the internet. Some sites are: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/wilkinson/misc/miscrcpt.txt These are odd receipts that mention the following names: Baker, Holland, Pittman, Perkins, Whatley, Williams, Shinholser, Parrish, and Bynum Samuel's brother, William C. Montgomery, moved to Lowndes County, AL and in his three letters home he mentions a few people. http://www.rootsweb.com/~algwarch/lowndes.htm A brother, Robert, moved to the Indiana Territory and his letter back is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/in/gibson/gibson.htm A sister, Nancy, married Gideon Stewart and another sister, Sally, married Thomas Bozeman. There was also a brother James and a sister Ellenor. If you're kin, I'd love to hear from you. Beth 130 Cherokee Forest Dr. Athens, GA 30601 http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/8130

Hi, I have the "Wilkinson Co. Historical Collections" by Joseph T Maddox. I will do look ups for specific names. Give me a few days to get back to you. Pat Vause
Hi everyone, here is a list of surnames I am researching in Wilkinson Co., GA. I look forward to making some more cousin connections. Of course, my main interest is my Carter line. I am primarily searching for information on a William Carter, b. Abt 1808 in SC, who married a woman named Esther or Easter. They had five children, Nancy, Sinah, Martha, Andrew and William. They supposedly moved to Wilkinson Co., GA and settled around Mount Nebo Church area. I have been told that there is a large Carter family cemetary plot near what was called "The Carter Place". Does anyone know anything about that? Or where it is located today? Sure could use some help finding where William came from. Can anyone help?? Please visit my website at http://www.mylink.net/~dcarter/ and browse my family file. Whatever dates and places I have found are listed on the site. Daniel Carter Bloodworth / Carter / Holder / Johns / Wheeler / Nunn / Etheridge / Anderson / Whitaker / Fountain / Smith
*HI COUSIN DANIEL (CARTER)! I am also related to (but dont descend from) ETHERIDGE/FOUNTAIN/ in Wilkinson Co., and do descend from Smith! Do your Smith;'s go back to Anson Co.NC in 1700s/???? Gotta run right now...more later...hope to hear from you again! TINA/CA List mgr.
