WELCOME JAMES MOORE, our latest member! Pls. be sure to post your info and any queries you might have..... there are lot of us here, and some good, knowledgeable, helpful people! Tell us a little abt yourself too, if you'd like. I live in CA, but all my ancestors were from GA, all my Dad's were from Wilkinson Co., so I'm related to MANY Wlknsn Co. families! Hey Tina, Try this site out. It is the US Geo Survey site and I have found it very useful over time. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html I also have a site for 1895 maps, but I need to find what I did with it. Bob Fisher Covington, Georgia
I was just asked a question about obtaining a marker for a Confederate Veteran. My understanding is that this headstone can be obtained through the Dept of Veteran Affairs. Our library had some application forms which I used, and this is the address.... But I don't know how to get the application form itself. Perhaps contact the nearest VA Regional Office, national cemetery or a local veterans' organization. (If anyone has had an actual experience with this, perhaps you can add some helpful details!) VA Form 40-1330 Office of Memorial Programs (403A) Department of Veterans Affairs 810 Vermont Ave. NW Washington, DC 20420 Eligible: Any deceased verteran discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Must provide an official document pertaining to military service, ie. muster rolls, extracts from State files, pension or land warrant. Virginia

DEAR FAYE & ALL: Just took another look at your updated website (HOOKS site but MANY other names....thousands of families, many of early NC & Ga lines, incl. many of our WILKINSON CO. lines).... It's great! I'm still stumped as to the family my PRUDENCE HOOKS b. 1788 (m. John Holleman) belongs to! I have thought for some time, and still do, even more now that I've looked at your updated Pedigrees of the Hooks' around that time period, that she must be possibly the GR'DAUGHTER of THOMAS HOOKS SR. & ANNA BELOTTE. Think she is probably sister to WHITMELL, HILLARY, THOS., JR., CHARLES, WILLIAM, and the rest of the gang. Why? Because they are in the same area (Wilkes/Putnam/Wilkinson Co. GA around the same time she is, with husband JOHN HOLLIMAN/HOLLEMAN b. 1785 GA), and the HOOKS family mentioned above was in DUPLIN CO.NC earlier, and that's the county where another related family was , MITCHELL WATKINS, SR..... this family is related in Washington/Wilkinson Co.GA a generation or two or three later..... I'm wondering, since PRUDENCE does not show up in any family group anywhere so far under the name PRUDENCE HOOKS (and I have not found any other female born 1788 GA as she is, in the family), so I'm wondering: 1. Could PRUDENCE be a nickname or is there another nickname for Prudence, that perhaps she used at a different time? (Not Nancy, Polly, Mary I suppose) 2. Could her name PRUDENCE HOOKS be a PREVIOUS MARRIED NAME???? I hadnt considered that before, but now I am considering EVERYTHING!!! MAYBE SHE WAS not a Hooks by blood, but by marriage????? BOB KINGERY, does any of this sound remotely possible, and have you had any luck with this branch of our family????? It's YOURS too, so I'll ask you about it! (It's YOURS or your wife's, I dont remember which! Or is it BOTH?????) If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear them!!! Thanks much, *TINA/CA* tina#tcsn.net *VISIT FAYE's great HOOKS (& others) website full of easy to follow Pedigrees and a great name Index! I have found the A. I. S. ( Accelereated Indexing Systems) a good place to begin searching for ancestors. This search is available on microfiche in the LDS Family History Centers. This system is an index that lists names from U.S. censuses and other useful records from the years 1607-1906. The FHC can provide you with a Resource Guide to using the AIS. These indexes ( there are nine searches) will help to narrow down your search and locate where your ancestor lived. It is a valuable and much over-looked resource. Pat Vause
*HI ALL: (Just FYI) The below url is for the Wlknsn Co. Query Forum (or Board) where people can go and post their Queries....every query that gets posted THERE, I receive in my own email, and I then Forward it HERE .... so we don't have to miss out on anything, and you lucky people don't have to keep going back and forth, here and there, etc. BUT, not EVERYONE on the Query Forum/Board is on here (or are they?????), so every once in a while, like every few months, we might want to hop over there and POST OUR OWN QUERIES, listing our WLKNS CO. SURNAMES and time frame, etc., in case someone over there misses it and isn't on this List. Just a thought..... *HI PAT & ALL: Thanks for posting that info on AIS---one little addition I'd make.... The AIS is (or should be) LOCATED AT EACH LOCAL FHC...it's not something you have to send away to SLC for. So it's readily available. Also, I have always had good luck looking at AIS 'SEARCH 7a' (it's the one that covers, I believe, the entire U.S. for th largest # of years....you dont need to look up a name on each and every 'search') "7a" has always been the one I go to. The way you would use it is, let's say, you have a WILLIS KEEN ancestor (which I do) in GA, in the mid 1800s. So you just go into the drawer or file that contains the AIS microfiche. (You can ask the volunteers at the FHC where to find the AIS). Then, you look thru them till you come to SEARCH 7a ... (they are in alphabetical order); then you take out the fiche that has "KEEN" on it, and look at it on the microfiche reader. Look under KEEN, and scroll down to first name of WILLIS. It will then very clearly indicate across the line, for every WILLIS KEEN listed on it, the STATE and many times the COUNTY (or township), and the YEAR of the 'event', and it will say WHAT THE EVENT is (either CENSUS or many times TAX List)...but if you find 2 or 3 WILLIS KEEN's in GA, then look for the COUNTY you believe yours was in. Then it gives you the YEAR and EVENT, so if you believe that one is yours, then you know WHEN AND WHERE he was listed as being there! I've looked up most of my southern lines for a certain time period (mid 1800s) and found virtually every one of them on there! So it does double in many cases as an "index" of who was where, when! (Not EVERYONE will appear on the AIS though....if I understand completely, they never did completely complete it, and are not planning to...but what they did do was a heck of a job and I highly recommend people taking a minute or two look at it if you're having trouble finding someone or just wanting a quick CENSUS/TAX index search!) Have fun! *TINA/CA* List Mgr. At 09:15 AM 9/24/99 -0700, you wrote: >I have found the A. I. S. ( Accelereated Indexing Systems) a good place to begin searching for ancestors. *HI ALL: I happen to have two copies of the big giant Will book, NORTH CAROLINA WILLS: A Testator Index, 1665-1900", by Thornton W. Mitchell. I 'lost' the first one, then repurchased, then found. You know how that goes. If I can get my hands on it, I will be wanting to sell it so that I can then purchase ANOTHER good book that I dont already have a copy of!!! I will see what the going rate is for it, thru BN, amazon.com, Clearfield, GPC, etc., and will try to sell it for a little lower than going rate...but wd like to get close to my price I paid as it's practically brand new and a GREAT RESOURCE. Will figure it out and post here.... Anyone interested, email me please and I'll take the first one who writes me and see if by the time I FIND it, if you might still WANT it! (I know it's here somewhere, I saw it not long ago....both of them!!!) *I'm STILL trying to find a copy to buy of "WILKINSON CO.GA HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS" by Joseph T. Mattox. If you know where I can find one, pls let me know. IN FACT, MY NC Will book here cost prob. twice as much as the WCHC book that I want, and I'd be willing to TRADE book for book, if someone can give up their WCHC book by Jos. T. Mattox to me!!!!!!
