    1. Re: [GAWILKIN-L] VHS to DVD?
    2. Earl Moore
    3. Tina, I've done this a number of times. Let me tell you what hardware and software you'll need. First you'll need a "capture" card, a card which goes in a PCI slot in your PC. You connect your VCR or Camcorder to one of the appropriate input connections on the card. You then transfer your tape video onto the PC. Finally you burn the video to a DVD disk. OK, the capture card will cost $50-75. Try Circuit City or Best Buys. I use one called "Creative Labs Digital VCR". Next you need software to burn the video onto the dvd disk. There are many on the market that can be had for $50-100. Ask at the stores I mentioned above. I have one called Pinnacle Studio 7 which I use to edit tapes before I burn them. You need this program also to convert the VHS format to the DVD format (called MPEG2). Finally you will need a DVD burner. I have a Sony DRU-500A. It cost $400, but it has the advantage over all others in that it records in multiple formats so you will be certain to get a DVD that will play in your player. Believe it or not I am familiar with quite a few people who are having to go buy different players to get their DVDs to play. So we're talking serious bucks here but It's worth it (at least to me). There is another alternative to a DVD burner. VHS can be burned on a regular much cheaper($50) CD burner if it is first converted to MPEG1 (which the Pinnacle program will do) The problem is that you only get about 30 minutes on a regular disk. Quality is good tho. A DVD disk will hold 2 hrs. of video. I hope I've been some help.
