    2. Hi List: I am searching for the following family: David Johns(t)on b. 1787 in Georgia. By 1838, he is found in Plaquemines Parish, LA. In 1840, he married Hannah Fredericka Hoffman. In 1841, their only son is born, Alexander Henry Johns(t)on. David died in 1852, and Alexander married in 1863 to Magdalena (Sherwood) Keisel. In 1864, Hannah married Mathew Weisheimer. Does this family, match or may match anyone elses. This has been my biggest brick wall for years. 1. Suspected Error in Maddox Book - Smith/Underwood/Johns/Sumner
    2. Carole
    3. I believe that Maddox has confused two different Marthas in his book, Wilkinson County Historical Collections. This discrepancy was posted by Ann in 2001 and I agree with her. I base my belief on two factors: 1) ages of the two Marthas in question as presented in various censuses and 2) location of family members. Age Comparison For Maddox's Martha Lord, her gravestone gives her birth year as 1847. This tracks closely with the censuses of 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920. However, Martha, the daughter of Melinda and John Smith, was born about 1839 according to the censuses of 1850, 1860 and 1880. Family Location In the 1880 census for Passmore Dist 329, Malinda and John G. Smith are found with 4 of their 7 children living right next to them. One of these children is Martha J. Sumner, age 43, married to John Sumner. The other children living next to Malinda and John are Samuel and his family, John G., Jr. and his family, and William F. who is unmarried. Therefore, I believe Martha, daughter of Malinda and John Smith did not marry George Lord, she married John Sumner. I have been working on this family for awhile and would be interested in hearing what others have found concerning them. The family of Phoebe Smith who married William Johns has been documented here already and I have information to share concerning Archibald Thomas Smith, older brother of Martha J and Phoebe.

    3. To Joy Jenkins, I tried to send this directly to you but the message came back as undeliverable. Let me know if this helps. I have been digging into all of the BECKs that were in Wilkinson County and have started looking at other BECKs born in GA too. I have been trying to put together families of BECKs to see if I can figure out the relationships of several BECKs that married BLOODWORTHs, SNOWs, McQUAIGs, WEAVERs, AMERSONs, and several other lines. These are the only references that I have to a Martin BECK. I would guess that yours is the 34 year old. The following came from census images at Heritage Quest Online. If you would like a PDF or TIFF file of the image I would be happy to send one to you. BECK , MARTIN age 40 Male White born in GA lived in MO, ST FRANCOIS County, PENDLETON TWP in 1910 BECK , MARTIN V age 34 Male White born in GA lived in FL, PUTNAM County, EAST PALATKA 9-PCT in 1920 BECK , MARTIN age 35 Male White born in GA lived in GA, LUMPKIN County, CANE CRK 296-MILITIA DIST in 1920 I hope that this helps.
