    2. does anyone have any information on a letty durham, born about 1744 in wilkes co ga. she married thomas howard and moved to breathitt co. ky.tradion has her as being a full blood cherokee, but i need more infortmation on her. it is said that there was a missionary named durham, an that she took the durham name and that her husband thomas was friends with him. please help. carolyn

    3. Wilkes County wasn't formed until 1777, so you are going to be working with British colonial records for that time period. I have a small volume of records covering 1748-1783, but there is no Durham in the index, nor in any other of my GA or Wilkes books that early. Some Durhams did pay taxes in Wilkes County from 1787-----Abraham, Anderson, David, Joab, and Samuel. There is also listings for Abraham DURHOM, Andesens DURREM, and Samuel DURROM. There is a Thomas HOWARD paying taxes in Wilkes County in 1786, and a T. HOWARD in 1802. There are a lot of other Howards in the index, too. Do you have more precise information on Letty: where she and Thomas Howard married, particularly, when they left GA for KY, etc.?
