Ga Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10727 Surname: Grimes, Terell, Wingfield, Fontaine ------------------------- This was sent to me, without the resource..but it was from a History of one one the counties in Va. Linda ( This was sent to a list i am on , i have found just about the same info except for the Va. part :-), but Linda had put the info together so nicely, so will send her info CGT.) MARIA MERWIN FONTAINE (1789-1822) was born on her father's plantation of "Bien Venue" in Louisa County, Virginia on February 16, 1789. She spent most of her childhood there, but in 1797 was taken to Kentucky by her parents. Growing up in the vicinity of Louisville, Kentucky, settlement, Maria married in Louisville on June 24, 1810, STERLING GRIMES. He was the son of John Grimes, a native of Hanover County, Virginia, who had settled in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1784, and his second wife, Elizabeth Wingfield.**(i think this was John's 1st wife CGT) Sterling was born in Hanover County,Virginia, on January 10, 1782, and was carried as a small child to Wilkes County, where he grew to manhood. The two families, Fontaine and Grimes, were undoubtedly acquainted back in Virginia and related. The mother of Maria, Barbara Terrell, was a cousin to Sterling's grandmother, who was also a Terrell. It is possible that the marriage between Sterling and Maria was an arranged one. Soon after their wedding, the couple left Louisville, and Maria never saw her famiily or Louisville again. Sterling was a man of varied business interests. He was a practicing physician, a planter who owned a large plantation near Greensboro, Georgia, and the founder and chief stockholder of the Bank of Greensboro. Unfortunately, Maria died on their plantation on July 18, 1822, and Sterling lived on only a few years, dying in Greensboro on December 14, 1826. They left four orphaned children who were: THOMAS PRATHER GRIMES, STERLING FONTAINE GRIMES (1812- ), MARY JANE GRIMES (1816-1884), and ANNE AMERICA GRIMES." ** Sterling Grimes m Sarah Bowdree and they and some of the other Grimes went on down to Columbus Ga. and died there.
