I have some abstracts of some 1790s estate records (letters of administration, estate returns) from the book "Early Records of GA Vol. II"; Grace Gillam DAVISON; 1932. I wanted to order these records on film through LDS, but they only have administrator bonds from 1806, and estate returns from 1811. Do the earlier records still exist? And if so, where would I look for them? Thanks for any help! Jeanne Arguelles [email protected]
Go to Wilkes Co Website and you will find the address for the probate judge. If you will write they can tell you what records they have and how much they will charge for copies. Jeanne - Didn't see that you had received an answer, so if you're still looking you might try the following source via your local library, requesting an interlibrary loan of the microfilm from the Georgia Department of Archives and History. It should be about the same cost (or less) per reel to order as ordering from your local FHC at LDS. To get to the online catalog for the Archives, go to http://gil.sos.state.ga.us/ but, the actual address for the specific search I conducted on "Wilkes County" and "wills" is the following: http://gil.sos.state.ga.us/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?SAB1=wills&BOOL1=all+of+the se&FLD1=Keyword+Anywhere+%28GKEY%29&GRP1=AND+with+next+set&SAB2=Wilkes+Count y&BOOL2=all+of+these&FLD2=Subject+%28SKEY%29&GRP2=AND+with+next+set&SAB3=&BO OL3=all+of+these&FLD3=Keyword+Anywhere+%28GKEY%29&PID=24177&SEQ=200102101126 14&CNT=50&HIST=1 One item this search produced was the following, which may well have the material for which you search. Author: Georgia. Inferior Court (Wilkes County) Title: Estate record books, 1777-1848. Description: 4 microfilm reels : 35 mm. Arranged chronologically. Notes: Records are open. These record books contain 1) wills, 2) inventories and appraisements, 3) returns, 4) sales, and 5) dismissals. Microfilm. Atlanta, Ga,: Georgia Dept. of Archives and History, 1958. Subject(s): Decedents' estates--Georgia--Wilkes County. Wills--Georgia--Wilkes County. Probate courts--Georgia--Wilkes County. Georgia--Politics and government. Estate records. Microforms. Hope this helps.
