Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/704 Surname: Hudgens, Hudgins, Thompson ------------------------- Another Thompson researcher and I are tracking the family of William Hudgins who appears in the 1820 census of Wilkes county. We believe his daughter, Mary Ann Hudgins, born in 1813 married our Thompson ancestor, Chesley Thompson born in 1804. On the census, Benjamin Thompson is a few doors away from our William Hudgens. Do you know of any connections. We are looking for the parents of Chesley Thompson who married Mary Ann Hudgens in Jasper county, GA about 1830. Supposedly his father was a Rev. War Soldier and family lore has his name being Monroe. I would like to know the names of Benjamin Thompson's children and spouses if possible. Is there any connection here to Jasper county GA. Chesley was supposedly born there. Thanks, Riki
My most elusive surname to search is GILCOAT. The excellent tax book of Wilkes County done by Frank Parker Hudson shows that John GILCOAT paid taxes several of the years between 1785 and 1805. My knowledge of the geography is sketchy; so I do not know if was in what is now Wilkes County. It was indicated that one of his neighbors was William FEW. The name appeared as GILCOAT, GILLCOAT and JILCOAT. The latter spelling indicates the way the name sounds when pronounced. I would very much appreciate learning of anything that might turn up on this name. However, it is located in Oglethorpe Co., and not Wilkes Co. The ones who are buried there are Capt. John Milner, Rebecca Godwin, Jonathan "John" Dunn Milner, Matilda Lumpkin-Milner, Emily Milner, Rebecca W. Milner, wife of William T. Howard. There are also about 10 more unidentifiable graves there too. We are going back so that I can rephotograph John Dunn Milner's gravesite again since that photo did not turn out the first time that we were there. If you would like I can scan the photos for you and send them. Just let me know. I also have Milner family bible records as well if you are interested in those. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.---Sandy in Georgia.

The information I have on Capt. Bennett's District is based on the 1790 tax returns and comes from the book _A 1790 Census for Wilkes County, Georgia Prepared from Tax Returns with Abstracts of the 1790 Tax Reports_, compiled by Frank Parker Hudson, 1988 I found the book in the Athens Regional Library, Athens, GA. In the book is a map titled "Militia District Companies, Wilkes County, Georgia, 1790". There is no map to show changes that would have been made by 1811, but the quote below will give some information. In this book the description for Capt. Bennett's District, as it existed 1790, is as follows: "The area in which Captain Bennett's Company was resident in 1790 is being designated as District X [the map's code is alpha letters for each captain's district]. Taxpayers reported lands on Long Creek, Little River, and Kettle Creek in 1792. Most of the district was placed into Oglethorpe County in December 1793 and taxpayers can be found in Captain Cargill's District of the first tax digest for Oglethorpe County. Those left in Wilkes County were added to District M in 1795. The area encompassed by District X in 1790 is now the southeast tip of Oglethorpe County, the northwest tip of Taliaferro County, and a small part of the 171st District of Wilkes County." According to this description, Bennett's Company doesn't seem to have still been in existence in 1811, the date mentioned in your message, unless I'm reading this incorrectly (quite possible!!!). Did you have some material identifying them with that company in 1811? I do not have a copy of the full listing of these ca.1790 residents since I photocopied only a small bit that pertained to my family (McCartney), so I can't help with names for Captain Bennett's Company, i.e., the residents. As to the material being on line, I have no idea, but transcribing everyone in the companies from the book mentioned above would not be possible without permission from the author; with a publishing date of 1988, it would still be copyrighted. I couldn't find a publisher's name, but maybe someone has seen this in their library and could tell you more. I try to note such things for source citation, but either I missed it or it wasn't there. If I can check something else with my limited Georgia resources here in Iowa, let me know.
