    2. Donna, there is some connection of the Gibson family to the George Young family that came into Wilkes County before 1800. They were from Pittsylvania Co., VA. I have not figured out the relationship as yet. Do you have anything? Best regards, Frances Ann

    1. Taliaferro & Clark Settlements, 1780's
    2. Barry Clark
    3. Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10686 Surname: Clark, Hall ------------------------- Looking for the names of families and family members that were involved in the Savannah River settlements founded by Benjamin Teliaferro in 1784 and William Clark in 1787. McIntosh's "Official History of Elbert Co." lists a few, but a more complete list may have hints that might help track down the parents of my GGG-grandparents, Williamson and Martha (Patsy) Hall Clark. Williamson was born abt 1784 some place in VA and she abt 1790 in VA, possibly Culpeper Co. He was in Georgia by at least 1802, but I suspect much earlier. They probably married about 1805, probably in GA. Both apparently died in Elbert Co. after 1860, and early sources say both were buried in the "Old Clark burying ground" on the "old Beck Farm" which was later the "Rucker Estate" in Elbert Co. Records in Elbert Co (cut from Wilkes Co. 1790) show him associated with Christopher and Rhoda Clark, Edward and Sara Clark, Larkin Clark, George Clark, and Zach. Smith, among others. Old DAR papers state that his father was James Clark, RS, born abt 1760 and died in VA abt 1804, but the DAR Index contains no James Clark with those dates in or out of VA. We believe that Williamson (and probably Edward, Larkin and George Clark) may be connected to the Clarks of Orange/Madison/Culpeper Cos. of Virginia. He could also be connected to the Clarks of Louisa Co. (given the association with Christopher Clark, prominent christian and surnames in Louisa Co. VA and later in Elbert Co. GA), but christian names that recur in the line for several generations suggest the former. Info on any of these people or any of the families from the 1784 and 1787 settlements would be much appreciated. Will gladly share whatever I have that might be of use. Barry Clark Fredericksburg, VA

Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10681 Surname: Dent, Glibert, Richardson, Moore, Middleton, Hale, Lankston, Whatley, Barksdale, Nelson, Hill ------------------------- Bill, I can't be sure if this is the same family as yours, but in 1800 there were some Dents that were in close proximity to Wilkes County, GA. Following is a transcription of a "road maintenance order" found in Hancock Co. Inferior Court Minutes (1800-1808) Evidence I've collected thus far strongly suggests that the road ran from Powellton, Hancock Co., GA to White Plains, Greene Co., GA. This general area was part of Wilkes Co. previous to Greene's creation in 1786: "12-Jul-1800. District Five shall include the road from Obahdiah Richardson to Martin Gilberts and the following persons to work thereon, viz, William DENT Jr., William DENT Sr., Risdon Moore Sr., Zachariah Middleton, Hines Holt, Bolling Hale, John and Solomon Lankston?, Wyche & Tisdal Whatley, Abner Barksdale, Taylor Nelson, John Hill and Jas. Barksdale, overseer." Of those mentioned above, the following are known to have come from old Somerset Co., MD.: Taylor Nelson, John Hill, & Risdon Moore Sr. Evidence also suggests that the Dents lived on the "Powellton end" of the road. Hope this helps, Lee

    3. I am researching William Bentley married Jane (Hammond, Hammock) and son James Bentley who married Rachel Parkerson, daughter of Levin Parkerson, Rev. War Soldier. Will for William Bentley made Wilkes County, Georgia,1791 and probated Wilkes Co., Georgia 1792 mentions wife Jane, and children: John, Lewis, Susanna, James, Catheraine and youngest sons Balaam and Joshua Bentley.. Testators were Peter Smith John Chandler, William Hammock, Sr., and Sarah Thornton. One Wilkes County book states : 1775 William Bentley of South Carolina, with wife and 3 sons settled on North Fork of Little River. This was on No. side, No. fork of Little River, 1/2 mi. below James White's land. Wilkes County Tax List for 1785 mentions Wm. Bently in Capt. Walker's District. Also, mentions Balaam Bently in Capt. Walker's District. Marriage was found Onslow Co., No. Carolina for William Bentley to Jane Hammond, on Oct. 8, 1774, Testator Thos. Tucker, Wm. Cray, Jr.., have not determined whether this is my William Bentley, father of James Bentley. Father of Rachel Parkerson Bentley(she born 1788), was Levin Parkerson-Parkinson, Rev. Soldier for Maryland, resident 'till death of Wilkes County, Georgia, made Will in 1843, probated Wilkes County in May,1844. His Will mentions children, as follows: Louisa m. Samuel Dunnaway, Nancy m. Mr. Miller, Rachel m. Mr. Bentley, Harriet m. Mr. Jefferson, Peggy m. Mr. McElroy, and John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Rhodes(Rhoda), Rebecca and Artimesary. Levin Parkerson is buried at the old homeplace, later known as Efford Dunnaway homeplace, on Amity, Adasburg, Washington Rd. James Jennings made Deed 1816 to James Bentley for land in Wilkes County, GA, land bordered by Camp Creek, Levin Parkerson, William Leverett, and Ezekial Harris. This same land was deeded by James Bentley to Abner Welborn in 1832. In 1830 and 1840 Monroe County census, James Bentley and family appear, however, James does not appear on 1850 Census, but his Widow Rachel is listed and living with dau. Martha Bentley Murray and her family. The Bentley family lives on there until after Civil War at which time their son and my GrGrandfather William "Willis" Larkin Bentley (married 1842 to Ann Davis, parents unknown) and family move to Nacogdoches, Texas. Any word from others interested in this line would be appreciated. Thanks, Marilyn Bentley Dawson
