Is anyone researching Allen J. and Eunice ARNOLD? Eunice is on the 1870 census in Wilkes Co, and living with her is Ibby HUMAN (sister of my ancestor). I'm wondering if Ibby was still living with her in 1880, and if anyone has a copy of that census page. Thanks for any help. Jeanne Arguelles ejarguelles@msn.com
Wilkes County wasn't formed until 1777, so you are going to be working with British colonial records for that time period. I have a small volume of records covering 1748-1783, but there is no Durham in the index, nor in any other of my GA or Wilkes books that early. Some Durhams did pay taxes in Wilkes County from 1787-----Abraham, Anderson, David, Joab, and Samuel. There is also listings for Abraham DURHOM, Andesens DURREM, and Samuel DURROM. There is a Thomas HOWARD paying taxes in Wilkes County in 1786, and a T. HOWARD in 1802. There are a lot of other Howards in the index, too. Do you have more precise information on Letty: where she and Thomas Howard married, particularly, when they left GA for KY, etc.? Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10700 Surname: Clark, Hall ------------------------- Jim, Thanks for responding. No, I was not aware of such a map. Surely the Ga. Archives has it, but are there any published copies.? I get to Ga. only once or twice a year. By the way, the Zach. Smith connection was a lawsuit for the "State vs. Zach. Smith, Larkin Clark, and Williamson Clark, indict. tespass. True bill against Zach. Smith and Larkin Clark. No bill against Williamson Clark." I've been told that "indict." means "indictment," that "tespass" maybe be a misspelling for "trespass," and that a "true bill" is something like a grand jury indictment. This is in Elbert Co. court records. Is this Zach. Smith yours? Barry Clark Fredericksburg, VA
Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10697 Surname: Hardman, Clark, Smith ------------------------- Barry, Just wondering if you have seen a copy of "Governor Gilmer's Map of the Broad River settlement's". It locates various families in relation to rivers and streams. This map lists quite a number of families and locates John Clark, General Elijah Clark, and General Thomas A. Smith in Wilkes county very near the town of Washington. This is by no means a complete listing as it was drawn early on and does not include some families that came in the 1780's. My family the Hardmans settled on Goosepond creek,in the early 1780's. The area is now in Oglethorpe county. The Hardman's had as neighbors Christopher Clark, and Micajah Clark. Micajah was a witness to the will of John Hardman.

Executor/Executrix is named in a will Administrator = the courts appoint, because a person died intestate (without a will)
Could someone please tell me if GA Estate Laws in 1814 used the same terminology as Texas and Alabama law re: the usage of the word administrator vs. executor? In Texas,, "if a will is probated then the court turns over the disposition of the estate to the named executor or executors. If there is no will, the court appoints an administrator (quite often a son and/or son-in-law). The word executor is used when there is a will, the word administrator is used when there is not." Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10690 Surname: Swindall, Adcock ------------------------- I am currently researching Matthias and Elizabeth Swindall who appeared in the 1850 Henry County Kentucky Census "Born Germany". Their son Jacob, Elizabeth, and Theodor Swindall appeared also in the 1850 census. I have reason to believe that the family moved to Illinois in the late 1800. I also believe that Mathias had a brother or Aunt who married George Adcock Buckingham Co. Va and Shelby County KY. I have a cousin whose grandfather was Joel Adcock who in turn was George Adcock's grandson that told him as a child he would visit his Swindall cousins in Illinois. Jacob also witnesses an Adcock Marriage in Shelby Co KY. I have recently spoken with some Swindall who were related to Mathias however they did not know any further information. Apparently Mathias line moved to Texas in the early 1900 from Illinois. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I do not know if they had any relative in Wilkes County or not, however there may be a conncection Thanks,
