Judge Tait held the trial. Mr. Barclay's grave is supposed to be located on the old Elbertson and Augusta road a few miles beyond Sandtown (Hyde). A Mr. T.W. Callaway had a map of Wilkes County, and a spot is marked "Murdered Bartlett's Grave" which should have been Barclay. This Polly was my great great grandmother. Can you give me any information on thi subject? Supposedly there is a Polly Barclay tree, named after her in Washington, GA, being the tree where she was hung. Can you give me additional info?

Ga Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10727 Surname: Grimes, Terell, Wingfield, Fontaine ------------------------- This was sent to me, without the resource..but it was from a History of one one the counties in Va. Linda ( This was sent to a list i am on , i have found just about the same info except for the Va. part :-), but Linda had put the info together so nicely, so will send her info CGT.) MARIA MERWIN FONTAINE (1789-1822) was born on her father's plantation of "Bien Venue" in Louisa County, Virginia on February 16, 1789. She spent most of her childhood there, but in 1797 was taken to Kentucky by her parents. Growing up in the vicinity of Louisville, Kentucky, settlement, Maria married in Louisville on June 24, 1810, STERLING GRIMES. He was the son of John Grimes, a native of Hanover County, Virginia, who had settled in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1784, and his second wife, Elizabeth Wingfield.**(i think this was John's 1st wife CGT) Sterling was born in Hanover County,Virginia, on January 10, 1782, and was carried as a small child to Wilkes County, where he grew to manhood. The two families, Fontaine and Grimes, were undoubtedly acquainted back in Virginia and related. The mother of Maria, Barbara Terrell, was a cousin to Sterling's grandmother, who was also a Terrell. It is possible that the marriage between Sterling and Maria was an arranged one. Soon after their wedding, the couple left Louisville, and Maria never saw her famiily or Louisville again. Sterling was a man of varied business interests. He was a practicing physician, a planter who owned a large plantation near Greensboro, Georgia, and the founder and chief stockholder of the Bank of Greensboro. Unfortunately, Maria died on their plantation on July 18, 1822, and Sterling lived on only a few years, dying in Greensboro on December 14, 1826. They left four orphaned children who were: THOMAS PRATHER GRIMES, STERLING FONTAINE GRIMES (1812- ), MARY JANE GRIMES (1816-1884), and ANNE AMERICA GRIMES." ** Sterling Grimes m Sarah Bowdree and they and some of the other Grimes went on down to Columbus Ga. and died there. I have put the Tombstone pictures on the WWW.FIND A GRAVE.com site it will be under Linwood Cemetery, Muscogee Co., Ga. Good luck to all

    3. Meredith, your query came across on the list from the query server. You are the first person I've seen who identified Margaret S. Dyson (who, I presume, was a daughter of John and Ann (Heard) Dyson) as having the middle name Stuart. Do you have solid info on this middle name or are you guessing what the S stood for? John and Ann Dyson were my 3ggps - thru their son John Heard Dyson. (Both John and John Heard Dyson served as clerks of court in Wilkes County.) Can I help you with the Dyson or Heard lineage? 3. Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10723 Surname: Askew ------------------------- I am searching for any information on ASKEW in Wilkes County and am thrilled to see another post with information/questions on Askews. According to a gg-uncle,Pleasant Askew, his ASKEW grandfather came to Wilkes County, GA from VA in 1814. He said that Wilkes County was made up almost "exclusively of Virginians." My unknown ASKEW ancestor was said to have become "a county officer in Wilkes and died in 1822." (Are there any records of Wilkes County Officers abt 1820?) His son and my gg-grandfather, Henry James Askew, was born a year earlier, in 1821. No Askew is listed on the 1820 census in Wilkes County, and I haven't been able to document the above information which came from the biography of Pleasant Askew in GA Men of Mark. Henry James Askew's mother is thought to have married a Purvis after the death of her Askew husband and removed to Webster County, GA. Pleasant Askew was the youngest son of 13 Askew children of Henry James and Polly Dykes Askew. I have pictures of a number of the Askew children, and there is a picture of Pleasant in GA Men of Mark.
