Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10790 Surname: Smallwood ------------------------- What information do you have? I've worked on the family for over 20years and found very few records. There was a will for Elisha Smallwood, but it has been lost. I have copies of his estate papers and a letter from a woman who actually had a copy of the will. She supplied the list of children you have. Much of what she compiled can be documented with the records left in Wilkes County. I am interested in Elisha's son, Elisha, Jr. I believe he was father of my Elijah Smallwood who was in Jones and Wilkinson Counties. In 1840 an Elisha Smallwood, of the age of Elisha's son, was in Jones County near Elijah. Fairly good indicator that he was his father. Also, a Tabitha Smallwood was married in Jones County to John Renew on the same day Elijah's son, Lewis Shepherd Smallwood, was married. Elijah was born 1802 in GA. The only Smallwoods in GA were Elisha's family and the ones down around Savannah. I know that he wasn't son of Mark and William's family can be pretty well determined. Also, Elijah's first wife was Elizabeth Pool, who was a daughter of Jeremiah Pool and Milly Hammack. The Pools were from Warren County (originally Pettipool) and the Hammacks from Wilkes. A deed from Milly Hammack Pool Davison proves Elijah and Elizabeth's three children. Elisha Smallwood, Sr. may have been married to a Humphreys. We know that her given name was Tabitha, but Humphreys was a surname an old research said might have been the maiden name of either Elisha's or Mark's wife. Mark was married three times and not to a Humphreys. Elisha's father was William Smallwood who died in Granville Co., NC after 1766 (date of his will, no probate). From circumstantial evidence I have been able to link him to MD. He was very likely son of James Smallwood, Jr. and grandson of Col. James Smallwood, who was probably son of an earlier immigrant to Virginia. James Smallwood, Jr.'s son, William, was married to Mary. They sold their land in Charles County in 1755 and stated that they were moving (this per a deed). The known children of this couple were John and James. James later removed to Frederick Co., VA. Elijah, son of William Smallwood of Granville Co., NC, died in Surry Co., NC in 1810 was in his will, named two daughters and his wife, Sarah. In the 1760s an Elijah and Sarah Smallwood had a son, John, christened in Prince Georges Co., MD (neighboring county of Charles). In the 1790 and 1800 Surry Co., NC census a John Smallwood was always near Elijah. Fairly good indicator that the Elijah and John in NC were the ones in MD. With the will of William naming Elijah as son, as well as a William and Mary leaving MD about the time William and Mary appear in NC, it can be surmised that William in NC was of Maryland and son of James Smallwood, Jr. The will of William Smallwood in Granville mentioned many children and only four of whom ever seem to have lived in NC. Also, I don't recall any real estate being mentioned. I have always theorized that they removed from Charles Co., MD in 1755 to either Prince Georges County or to Frederick Co., VA. By his not having any real estate mentioned in his will I believe that he had just recently removed to Granville County. Also, another indicator is that many of his children never removed to NC and some, such as Elijah, removed to NC later. If you have any information to help with this, I will be most appreciative. I worked for many years on this family and have found very few records. I have often wondered if we should search the Frederick County, Virginia. I feel that those records might tell us something. There just isn't anything in NC. Also, the Hall/Habersham Cos., GA group is connected, but I've never been able to prove how. My theory (which is out on the Internet as fact) was that they were all descendants of William Smallwood, brother of Elisha. They may have been Elijah's descendants. They all were in KY prior to moving to GA. Again, I'll appreciate any information. John Smallwood

VA Nancy 60 Elizabeth 19 Lucy 17 Martha 16 Jane 6/12 According to the 1802 Wilkes Co. Tax Digest, Joseph Wheatley reported 126 acres on Morris's Ck., joining lands of Wm. Heard - land originally granted to Jon'n Goolsby. Moses Collins was nearby - had 200 acres on Morris's Creek, joining lands of Jas. Thurmond, land originally granted to Moses Collins. In 1804, both Joseph Wheatley and Abel Wheatley were listed. Joseph reported the 126 acres. Abel was listed, but did not own land. (He was b. abt 1780 in VA & would have been about 24 years in 1804.) The 126 acres was conveyed on 20 Nov 1802 (deed book TT, p. 272) from Azariah Bailey, Francis McClendon & Theophilus Hill, exors. of estate of Jacob McClendon to Joseph Wheatley, for $400, on Morris Creek waters - part of tract granted to Jonathan Goolsbrough.
